I can honestly say that joining the GVI Turtle and Lemon Shark Conservation Project was the best thing I have ever done. It is an experience I will value for the rest of my life. Right from the very beginning with the field manual I knew this trip was going to be amazing but nothing can prepare you for how stunning it is. I remember one day, I was chilling in the hammock before dinner when I saw a juvenile Lemon Shark and a ray. I called everyone and we watched the shark almost beach itself on a few occasions. However the best experience for me was when I was lucky enough to see not 1 or 2 but 3 Hawksbill Turtles lay their eggs all in one day. It was magical. The staff were so knowledgeable and were always happy to help. I have learnt to cook food for 25 people with very limited cooking equipment and ingredients, loved every Friday BBQ night and made friends for life.

I did a month long program in Quepos, Costa Rica with volunteers ages 18 and older. It involved working with children and organizing various activities for them including teaching songs in English. It was an amazing program that allowed me to make an impact on so many different childrens' lives. Additionally, we did some activities to promote sustainable development including beach cleans that involved the participation of locals. I HIGHLY recommend this program. I was able to walk away from this experience knowing that I made an impact, and also with new long lasting friendships.

I spent a month in Costa Rica in 2015 on GVI's U18 programme. There was a week of cultural activities, two weeks volunteering, renovating a school and then a week of adventure activities. It was honestly the best month of my life and I can't sing GVI's praises highly enough. The work they do in the communities there is incredible and and I was honoured to be able to contribute to that by making the primary school in Roncador a safer, cleaner, fresher environment for the kids to learn in. It is an experience I will treasure for the rest of my life and I would highly recommend going on any GVI programme as they are an incredible organisation.

My experience with GVI was an amazing time that I’ll never forget. I volunteered in Nomzamo and Lwandle townships in South Africa, doing extremely rewarding community-based work. I loved my time in SA, and the GVI staff were supportive and helpful, pre-departure, on project and off project. I couldn’t fault my experience with GVI, and would love to volunteer with them again!

Learned an incredible amount about elephants August 2018

My experience with GVI in Thailand was one to remember. I volunteered with the elephants in the village of Huay Pakoot north of Chiang Mai. I learned an incredible amount about elephants and the fantastic people who care for them. The hikes were excellent and the interaction with the elephants was more intimate than I could have ever imagined. The ethical approach taken by this program to help people observe and interact with elephants has changed my life. Every day that I was in the program got better than the one before it. I was sad to leave the village because of how profoundly the experience changed me. I am forever grateful for my decision to go and volunteer abroad. It is a choice I will treasure for the rest of my life.

I volunteered with GVI in Thailand for two weeks in July 2017. When I arrived, the second I left the cool, manageable temperatures of the airport and stepped out into the heat of Phuket was incredible, I felt physically hit by the atmosphere! The heat itself was nearly unbearable (especially considering I was wearing trousers and a long sleeved top!) and I almost immediately broke out in a sweat. Luckily, we soon found the GVI representatives who were standing with a banner with our names on and we were whisked away in a minibus ready to begin our first day in Thailand! When we arrived at the resort we were to be staying in, I was blown away by the sheer beauty of the place! There were gorgeous palm trees lining the paths and a calm, blue lake in the centre. The villa itself was really lovely, simple, but in the best way. It was all wooden, with a veranda and chairs outside which later on were perfect for relaxing on after a hard days work! Shortly afterwards, we headed out for a tour of the village which we would be working in. I learnt a lot of things about the local culture such as the fact that ‘birds nest soup’ is an expensive delicacy in Thailand and so the village has four large concrete buildings which constantly play birdsong in order to attract swallows which will nest there. Also, Thai people also have things called ‘Spirit houses’ which is essentially a miniature hut, slightly larger than a bird table, which they fill with gifts for the spirits who lived in the house before them in order to appease them so they will not haunt the house. As the group of volunteers were walking around, lots of small Thai children came rushing out of their houses to greet us! Apparently they love to test their English and so they will run over and and say ‘Hello’ to any of the foreigners! As we were heading back to the resort, my friend Sasha and I spotted two young Thai boys playing football, so we headed over and started up a brief conversation. I had learnt a small amount of Thai before I left so I found out they were called Ti and Po. We then had a miniature kick about in the street for a good ten minutes or so. It’s amazing how something like sport can connect people from completely different cultures who can barely speak each other’s language. This experience, and a plethora of others which I had during my time abroad, would not have occurred if it weren't for GVI and I would thoroughly recommend them to anyone in the future.
