Just got back from our Mull Odyssey cruise. An amazing, truly special holiday. So many highlights to pick from but the amazing columnar basalt rock formations on Staffa; Lochbuie Standing Stone Circle; dolphins bow riding; huge jellyfish; 'helping' crew the ship; Tobermory; sunsets & rainbows; Iona and the fabulous scenery are a good start. Special thanks to Christophe and Amy for going above and beyond being the crew. I cannot recommend this fabulous trip and company enough!

St Hilda - a little gem of a sailboat - great holiday. Excellent crew - thanks to skipper Christophe and cook Kerry . Arnamurchan distillery - fascinating tour - a real find. Loved the island of Egg - hike to Kildonan followed by fresh mussels and chips at the pub in the sun - bliss! And then she sped, bonnie boat, over the sea to Skye.

Wonderful, memorable cruise of the Inner Hebrides. The staff was far above any expectations I may have had. Great communication and assistance with the office prior to the trip. The crew on board took wonderful care of us, and were always responsive to our needs and preferences. Seamanship was clearly superior. Food was outstanding!! The ship is small enough that you really get a sense of being on the water and in the islands. It is also large enough to have resources and comforts. I am happy to recommend it.

A great experience. Captain Peter kept us in calm waters, Bosun Leo worked hard keeping the boat ship shape and ferrying us all around and Chef Andrea kept us all very well fed. Nothing was too much trouble for this wonderful crew. Seahorse II is a lovely wee cruise boat, and the new en-suite cabins are really very spacious for such a vessel. Top that all with sunny weather and wonderful company from all on board and we had a fabulous time. Little phone signal around the edge of Skye and the small isles, and no internet, so no-one could bother you is an added bonus!

Thanks to Skipper Christophe, excellent chef Anna and the other guests, we had a wonderful experience aboard the St Hilda last week. The whole trip met and exceeded our expectations. We were fortunate to have good weather and were able to explore the small islands of Rum, Eigg, Canna and Mull on foot as well as to visit a cove on Skye. Christophe was an excellent host as well as also keeping the boat in good order and making us all feel safe. When the wind was suitable he hoisted the three sails which was uplifting. It stabilised the boat he said. Anna made exceptional mostly-Scottish cuisine from a small galley with great flavours and variety and also snacks and drinks appeared just when we began to feel they’d be welcome. The dishes were all beautifully presented and the portions were generous. We saw Red Deer at close range whilst walking, seals basking and in the sea and dolphins who accompanied the boat for some distance. It was a memorable trip. Thank you to the whole team - both at base and onboard.

Stride Review

St. Hilda Sea Adventures provide the unique experience to see Scotland from the sea. They offer many activities and private excursions - a perfect travel experience for families, older travellers, and small multi-gen groups.

What Makes Them Stand Out?

Taking only up to 11 guests (6 on St Hilda and 11 on Seahorse II), their tours are incredibly unique, as you cruise aboard a classic ex-tall ship (St Hilda) or a proper small ship (Seahorse II). Activities include sailing, swimming, sea kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing, rock pooling, and lobster potting. Or, you can simply choose to just relax and watch the spectacular wildlife and scenery float by.

Who Travels With Them?

All ages and all types enjoy traveling with St. Hilda Sea Adventures. Families, couples, and solo passengers are all welcome. Passengers can choose to do as much or as little as they like. This is a great trip for young kids to enjoy as well, for the thrill of hoisting the sails like a true sailor.

Where Do They Operate?

The West Coast of Scotland is where they specialize, the Outer and Inner Hebrides specifically. Such a niche focus is a huge positive for those interested in getting a unique view of this part of the world.

Why Travel With Them?

Their Scottish cruises give you the opportunity to see extraordinary wildlife and to cruise aboard a small ship with skipper and chef and a small group of passengers. All food is included, and there are many opportunities for interesting excursions. Some excursions are included in the price however, you can also arrange excursions based on your interests. These are not included but allow for a wonderful amount of personalization to your travel experience with St. Hilda Sea Adventures.

From St Hilda Sea Adventures

We provide small ship cruising and wildlife holidays on the beautiful West Coast of Scotland. Our cruises, among the breathtakingly beautiful islands, sea lochs and mountains of the Inner and Outer Hebrides, are truly unforgettable adventures for all ages.

We anchor in the most sheltered, idyllic, safe havens where passengers can visit world famous malt whisky distilleries and remote Scottish islands such as St Kilda, Mull, Skye, Jura, Islay, Staffa and Iona. The magical Scottish seas are full of wildlife both above and below the waves. You can fish, swim, dive, set lobster pots and sail the sea and its lochs and marvel at the dolphins, porpoises, basking sharks, otters, sea eagles, myriads of sea birds and the occasional whale. Each day is as action packed or as relaxing as you please.

A cruising holiday on board our small ships is fun and informal.  The roomy deck saloons are where everyone dines and socialises and the outdoor decks are perfect for spotting wildlife, relaxing and eating al fresco and, throughout the cruise, you will have the services of your own skipper and cook. There is plenty of room on the decks to carry canoes, windsurfers or cycles.  The small ships’ tenders can also take you ashore for some wonderful, serious coastal and cliff walks or you could just wander along the shore beachcombing and examining the pretty seaside rock pools.

Our two, small cruise ships are St Hilda and Seahorse IISt Hilda is a traditional, wooden 54ft ketch. She is an ex-tall ship and sail training vessel and on St Hilda, youngsters and adults love to help work the sails.

Seahorse II (82 feet long) was built to the highest standard for the Norwegian fjords and life in the high northern latitudes and is powerful enough to cruise the many spectacular islands, stacks and lochs of Scotland’s West Coast yet small enough to anchor in remote and hauntingly beautiful places that larger passenger ships are unable to visit. On the spacious aft deck, we have a powerful little crane for launching tenders and sea kayaks. Seahorse II is a sturdy, go-anywhere, yet comfortable adventurer and follows the same itineraries as St Hilda but, on request, can be chartered for longer and even more adventurous passages.

Highlights

  • Oban: Your departure point will be Oban. After a short introduction to life on board our small ship we lift anchor and set sail to our first destination.
  • Loch Spelve: A narrow entrance leads us in to the tranquil waters of Loch Spelve (on the beautiful Isle of Mull) with its surrounding ancient oak forest. If we are lucky we might spot an otter along the loch shore. We can also pick up some local grown mussels in the morning before we leave to our next destination.
  • Tobermory: One of the most picturesque towns in the Western Isles with its famous whisky distillery and colourful waterfront. We anchor in the Bay where a Spanish galleon was supposedly sunk with all its treasure. We can spend a day ashore and for the adventurous there are fast boat trips that can be arranged to visit Fingal’s cave on the Isle of Staffa. There are also Sea Eagle Watch tours, guided walks or you can just wander along the streets, visit the delightful local museum, perhaps watch a pipe band, admire the wooden fishing boats and take in the long history of this lovely village.
  • Duart Castle: Our daytime anchorage in Duart Bay is below the spectacular 13th century Duart Castle, the ancestral home to the Maclean clan. We can go for walks along the shore and visit the castle and learn about its rich clan history.
  • Loch Aline: A pretty anchorage on the Morvern Peninsula, off the Sound of Mull.
  • Loch Linnhe: The long Loch Linnhe goes all the way to Fort William. We travel past Lismore Island for the sheltered anchorage off Shuna Island. We can go ashore and visit the local nature reserve on the mainland and admire the famous Castle Stalker. There are lovely walks across the causeway bridge to Port Appin.
