I absolutely loved my week with Trek America. As two young girls travelling we wanted to see lots with the safety of a group with us however the trip was much much more than that! We had an outstanding time, with fantastic people. It's great to meet people who love travelling and exploring too. Our guide was great. He gave us lots of tips along the way. I especially loved the stargazing we did at the Grand Canyon and Yosemite. Those little extras to the trip really made it the best time. I'd love to relieve the whole week again!

Going into this trip, I had high expectations of what it would be like. Leaving alaska, I underestimated how good Alaska actually was!

Living off the basics for the entire trip, made the experience much more enjoyable. No matter whwre you turned your head, the views were amazing.

If I could, I would do this trip over and over back to back all summer

As someone who only recently started travelling and is very much a city boy, but with deep love for nature, I think this trip has the right amount of both and I've never felt uncomfortable throughout the whole trip.

Everyone I met along the trip was super friendly and accommodating, and camping was a breeze. Got the chance too see some Moose, plenty of squirrels, eat 3 kinds of poutine, go on a canoe trip with the most gorgeous weather I've ever seen outside of Portugal, and a chance to see puffins, whales and seals up close. Waking up at 6AM might be tough at first but it's worth to hike a trail in the early morning. Niagara falls is always a must see whenever you're in this part of the USA/Canada. Less enjoyable part? Mosquitos. Be prepared.

The cities are very different from Portugal (no actual skyscrapers here) but I've never felt overwhelmed by their sheer size and surprisingly easy to walk the streets. Best part? No Mosquitos. Be prepared.

In summary, it's very good, really enjoyable, no stress, plenty of time to look around and explore and discover just a hint of how Canada and the USA really are.

Stride Review

Trek America (the sister company to Grand American Adventures) has excelled in the small group tour market for 40 years, operating fun, energetic trips for 18-30 year olds in the Americas.

What Makes TrekAmerica Stand Out?

On a TrekAmerica tour, travelers are guaranteed to have a fun, active, and energetic experience. When they started, their goal was to capture the spirit of adventure on cross country American road trips with friends. This idea remains with most groups kept intentionally small, capping at 13, providing the opportunity for you to really get to know your fellow travelers.

Who Will Enjoy Traveling with TrekAmerica?

Young woman on mountain peak

Seeking an adventure and adrenaline pumping tour with other young travelers who love being outdoors? You may find your tribe with TrekAmerica.

Their tours are aimed at travelers between the ages of 18-38, a majority of whom are single travelers - they are an attractive option for solos as none of their tours require a single supplement. TrekAmerica was born out of a group of friends going on a cross country road trip - and the sense of excitement that comes with that kind of trip permeates their itineraries and culture.

Unlike some of the more “party” centric youth tour companies, TrekAmerica attracts a wide range of travelers and their focus on adventure travel somewhat weeds out those who might be concerned about not have access to a hair dryer. "Trekkers", as they are known, are friendly, down to earth, open minded, and welcoming.

If you’re not a big talker, there’s more room on a TrekAmerica tour to get to know people on your own time. Most Trek America group trips are kept small - around 18 max - so introverts will feel at home too. A few TrekAmerica tours are larger, with a max of 50, so if you’ve got your social butterfly wings on, there is something for you too at TrekAmerica!

Top Destinations

TrekAmerica operates tours in North, Central, and South America, visiting everything from major cities to small towns and villages. Off the beaten track attractions are a major highlight.

TrekAmerica Travel Style

If you travel with TrekAmerica, be prepared for an active tour! Activities range from cycling to hardcore hiking to whitewater rafting, and the focus is on enjoying the outdoors. Be prepared to embrace whatever the weather happens to be, and go with the flow whether it be wet, muddy, or dusty.

On a TrekAmerica North America tours, you will travel in a small private vehicle, comfortable but not luxurious in true road trip style. Don’t worry, there’s wifi on most buses - so your selfies can be uploaded in [almost] real time. Days start early, so get ready for some sunrises!

In South America, many TrekAmerica tours take public transportation.

On overland trips, you’ll set up and break down your own tents and enjoy community meals around campfires. When not participating in the days planned activities, most “trekkers” enjoy seeing the local sites.

Guides are friendly, knowledgeable, and fun - usually in the same age range as the travelers themselves.

Why Choose a Tour With TrekAmerica?

If you want to get off the beaten track, are adventurous, and interested in meeting young, similar travelers, TrekAmerica would be a great option. These tours are great if you want an exciting break, where you can stretch your comfort zone and get back to nature. You will definitely not have a dull moment with a TrekAmerica tour.

FAQ

Are flights included?
No, however if you are in the United Kingdom Trek America can provide a quote and book your flights for you.
Do I need Travel Insurance?

Yes. Insurance is compulsory on all TrekAmerica tours. They recommend you purchase a policy through them as soon as your booking has been confirmed which has been specially created to cover all activities on their tours. This policy covers all residents within the EU. If you decide to arrange your own travel insurance please ensure your policy covers all optional activities you may wish to participate in as well as air rescue and repatriation. They also strongly recommend cancellation and baggage coverage.

What is the Average Group Size?
Our Original tours are based on travelling in small groups of up to 13 like-minded individuals from around the world, providing the security of group travel while maintaining the flexibility of independent discovery. Our Plus tours have an average group size of 30 (maximum 50) that you’ll stick with for the entire trip, giving you plenty of options when you choose who to hang out with! Our BOLT tours have a maximum group size of 16 (Central America) or 18 (South America), so you can easily blend in with the locals. Our Overland tours in South America have an average group size of 25 people (maximum 34) to get to know en route.
Pre or post trip accommodation available?
Most Trek America trips leave early on the first morning (except Plus, BOLT and Overland tours where you are free to arrive at any time on day one), and arrive in their final destination in the late afternoon (except BOLT and Overland tours where you are free to depart at any time on the last day). For this reason, they recommend extending your trip with at least one extra hotel night either side of your tour.
What is the age range?
TrekAmerica tours are designed specifically for passengers aged between 18 to 38. Consequently, they tend to focus on activities and nightlife that appeal to that age range. The minimum age on special Christmas and New Year trips and our Sips of Old Hollywood Urban Adventure is 21. The legal drinking age is 21 in the USA, 18 in Central America, and either 18 or 19 in Canada, depending on the province. Please note that TrekAmerica does not condone underage drinking on their tours.
What kind of luggage should I bring?
For camping trips a soft holdall or rucksack is generally better. There may be a few occasions where you will need to carry your bag short distances and a soft bag would be beneficial. When storing luggage in your tent it also works out better having a soft bag. Suitcases will however suffice. For budget lodging and hotel trips any type of bag would work and certainly not worth going to buy a new bag specially.

From Trek America

Born in 1972, TrekAmerica was the brain-child of Jeremy James; and was started out based on the idea of cross-country American road trips with friends. The very first treks were 21 days, starting in New York and ending in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, the very same route that is still our most popular trip today - the Southern Sun!

The concept was simple, get together a group of free-wheeling, independent types, pack up a van with tents, camping gear, and a trek leader and follow the road, hitting all the key places along the way. Labelled 'Tours for Non-Tourists' trips were aimed at 18-35's and offered a fun, flexible and cheap way to travel

Fast forward 40 years and whilst a few things have changed along the way our spirit remains the same, we love bringing together small groups of young, international travellers to experience the best of USA, Canada, Alaska and Central America. Taking in the incredible national parks, small towns, amazing cities and fantastic activities, TrekAmerica gives you the ultimate American adventure.
