Stride Take

Uganda’s signature safaris are all about tracking rare mountain gorillas, something few travelers will ever experience, and this one delivers with two days in mountainous Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. Tracking may take up to six hours per day (but often less), with an hour allowed for often close-up observation. This trip also includes chimpanzee tracking in Kibale National Park, home to the world’s highest density of primates, as well as more traditional game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park.  Lodging is in luxurious jungle camps, including the only camp in Bwindi.

This is a luxury small group safari. 12 people, two land rovers. We spent the arrival night in a hotel in Arusha, two of the nights during the safari in hotels, and the rest of the nights in the luxury camp. The hotels were all good. The food was good, not great. The luxury camp is a two room canvas tent containing a queen size bed or two doubles. then there is a dressing area leading to the "bathroom" which is a toilet seat on a box over a hole in the ground. There is a shower stall in which they fill a canvas bag with hot water from the fire. They will not begrudge you a refill if you want to take your time. The day starts early in the dining tent with breakfast. then it is off to the land rovers to begin the safari. The guides from all the different safari's communicate to share where the most sought after animals are to be found. You will absolutely be up close and personal with lions, elephants, giraffes, monkeys, wildebeest, ostrich, zebra, hyrax, and the bird life. You will also see Water buffallo and hippos, but is best not to get close to them. and you will see plenty of Cheetah and some Rhinos, but usually from afar.

Lunch is usually conducted picnic style in the park. Our A&K picnics were the envy of every other group. Then it is touring until sunset.

When you get back to camp there is a camp fire going and the head guide will present a lecture, while everyone enjoys some much needed libations, of which there is great variety and unlimited quantity. Then dinner in the dining tent, and after dinner back to the campfire for more libations, and usually to review everyone's pictures from that day.

The guides are extremely knowledgeable and friendly. You will actually miss them on your last day. I had a great time and heartily recommend this safari and A&K.

The best part is being inside the game park all day and night. You really dont want to be going back to a hotel, but to stay out in nature.

Some tips: There is a generator in the camp so you may recharge your electrical items every day. They can also launder your clothes. Things to bring: plenty of strong repellent to deter the horse flies, do not skimp on memory cards for your camera, be sure to have a telescopic lens for your camera, a good pair of binoculars with good magnification, a flashlight, a device to view your photos on, a device to copy your photos onto. Dont forget a sweater, its cold at Ngorongoro Crater. For your digestive happiness, I had good results taking probiotic and charcoal capsules every day. We took a trip to Jordan and Oman planned through our travel councillor and A&K. We chose this upmarket company and certainly had an upmarket holiday. Everything was top notch from beginning to end. We saw all the amazing sights, were given excellent tour guides and the accommodation was 5 star all the way. They included a couple of unusual accommodation choices too such as a rather posh tent in the desert and an Eco tent at the turtle reserve in Oman.
Would fully recommend this whole tour and A&K.

Recently had a holiday booked with Abercrombie and Kent which was so disappointing we left 5 days early and the rest of the family left 3 days early. The way that A&K dealt with the situation and with us as guests was unprofessional and the property manager we dealt with on site was rude and antagonising. We have had numerous holidays with A&K before and never have we had an experience like this. It has been constant excuses and no apologies. We will never travel with them again and have advised our extended family, friends and industry contacts to do the same.

Nothing could be more seamless or well planned than trips with A&K, however many times one changes one mind, they always manage it. Wouldn't travel to Egypt without them

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Entebbe, Uganda

Accommodation: Lake Victoria Serena Resort & Spa

Arrive in Entebbe and transfer to your hotel. Nicknamed the “Pearl of Africa,” Uganda shines with stunning greenery, deep lakes, soaring mountains and perhaps the greatest natural treasure of all — half of the world’s last remaining mountain gorilla population.

Day 2: Kibale National Park | Into the Forest

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Kyaninga Lodge

Take a scenic drive through rolling hills dotted with tea estates to Kibale National Park, one of the most varied tracts of tropical forest in Uganda. Known for its 300 bird species and population of chimpanzees, Kibale is home to 11 primate species. You may also spot mangabeys and a vast array of butterflies. Arrive at your lodge amid Lake Kyaninga and the Mountains of the Moon.

Day 3: Kibale National Park | Domain of the Chimpanzee

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Kyaninga Lodge

Rise early this morning and make the short drive to the start of your chimpanzee trek. The chimpanzees feed high in the trees, so binoculars are a must. Barks of baboons occasionally pierce the forest silence as you make your way along the trail. Take a guided walk in the wildlife-rich Bigodi Forest swamp, an excellent chance to view birds, sitatunga, mongooses, bush pigs, otters and bushbucks.

Day 4: Queen Elizabeth National Park | Ugandan Views

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Ishasha Wilderness Camp

Travel from Kibale to Queen Elizabeth National Park, home to a wide array of wildlife, including elephants, hippos, buffalo and baboons. Offering magnificent views of the rift valley, it is also known for its tree-climbing lions. En route to your camp, you may opt to take a boat cruise on the Kazina Channel. Upon arrival at your camp, take in fantastic park vistas and views of the Rwenzori Mountains.

Day 5: Queen Elizabeth National Park | Elephants & More

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Ishasha Wilderness Camp

Set out on morning and evening game drives in this majestic national park. Because the region occupies the main migration corridor between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, prolific plains game resides here, including topi and Uganda kob, as well as buffalo, hippos and some of the largest herds of elephants in the country. Spotted hyenas are common, and leopards occasionally glimpsed.

Day 6: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park | Lush Hills

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp

Take a game drive as you leave the park, with views of farmlands and local villages. Check in to your camp, the only one located within Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From this luxurious home base, set off on gorilla treks to track down these magnificent mammals at their most natural, a rare sight experienced by only the most fortunate. An even luckier few might see these placid creatures passing through the Gorilla Forest Camp, as there are no barriers, redefining any close encounter you have ever had with wildlife.

Days 7-8: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park | Gorilla Encounters

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp

Spend the next two days tracking endangered mountain gorillas and spending up to an hour with these fascinating creatures each day. Return to the lodge with time to relax, or set out on another guided forest hike.

Day 9: Depart Entebbe

Meals: Breakfast

Accommodation: Lake Victoria Serena Resort & Spa (dayroom)   |

Fly to Entebbe, with use of a dayroom until your connecting flight.
