AA took me from Nairobi to Vic Falls and I really enjoyed the experience. The group had people from different ages and backgrounds, from uni students to retired ladies. After a few days you feel very familiar to your travel buddies and there is a general feeling of cordiality and warmth. The food was great and I could make it healthysh. There is options for vegetarians, lots of fruits and vegetables if you like.
The truck is fine if you keep in mind that an overland camping tour in Africa not supposed to be comfortable. I felt safe all the time and reafirmed my belief that dangerous places are not necessarily those where many people live a very simple life.
The only thing I missed was having contact with local people. But I understand that this is a group tour, and a deeper contact demand a different travel style.

Had the time of my life reminded me that I was still young (in mind). V and Kanyo where out of this world made everything really easy for us all (even if I beat Kanyo in the chilli challenge) ok we will call it a draw as we both ate the hottest chilli Africa had to offer raw. I can't recommend the 58 day trip from Cape Town to Nairobi highly enough everything you could wish to do is all there for you my personnel highlights were trekking to see the mountain gorillas, the Ngorongoro crater, trying surfing, white water rafting on the grade 5 Rapids on the Zambize, winning 150 000 in the casino in Uganda ( don't get excited was only enough for 20 beers). Thanks V, every game drive had something new to see. What really made the trip was the like minded people who all went to have great experiences and lots of fun. The 4 day stay on Zanzibar was another highlight, sometimes you need a holiday from your holiday just to relax and recharge the batteries. All in all a great holiday with memories and friends I will remember all my life.
Absolute thanks for a great time, only one downside I had to go back to work after wished I could have stayed forever.
Hope to see you soon

I did Killi first; superb - organized like a dream & then moved on to Nairobi to start the trek to Cape Town; 72 days of pure, unadulterated bliss. We had a full bus (not a truck!!! haha) most of the way and although the dynamics changed a little Vee kept it all together with a very laid back hands on approach. After every 'special' day we all commented that was the best day ever - think we got to 22 best days ever - superb. Patrick and BJ the drivers where serious contenders for best supporting act. I've already got some people who want to do it; might do part again myself as need to see the crater lake in DRC - before or after. Superb value for money, great team work, hassle free - I haven't really come down yet and that's over a month ago. Book it and enjoy an experience of a lifetime.

I've met Absolute Africa team at Adventure Travel Show at London Olympia in January this year. I was on a mission to find the best, most experienced and affordable company which specializes in Kilimanjaro treks and trips to Zanzibar. Absolute Africa ticked all the boxes! I've had the most amazing adventure in August and it's thanks to the great communication, advice, organization and people who were either on the other side of the phone/ email or meeting me personally at the airports in Nairobi and Zanzibar, taking me to all my destinations and guiding/ looking after me on a way to Kilimanjaro. I enjoyed all the accommodation in Nairobi and Zanzibar and local trips. Traveling on my own, I relied on their advice and recommendation. Safety and comfort were my priority and thanks to thorough preparations and detailed itinerary, I felt I'm ready for the trip of a lifetime.
I'm already planning my next year's trip with Absolute and would recommend their services to anyone.

Itinerary

Day 1: Kigali, Rwanda to Ruhengeri

Meals: Dinner

We meet you in Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda, by midday at The Genocide Memorial and Museum. The memorial is a sobering reminder of the horrors of the 1994 genocide. On leaving the Memorial we travel through to Ruhengeri, a small town situated in the foothills of the Virungas and close to the Parc National des Volcans, the home of the endangered mountain gorilla. Known as ‘the land of a thousand hills’, the two hour drive through to Ruhengeri is thrilling as we approach the volcanoes of the gorilla park. We check in tonight to a simple lodge in Ruhengeri and prepare for our trek.

Distance: 87 km Drive times: 2 - 3 hours

Days 2 – 3: Ruhengeri

Meals: Breakfast and Dinner

A gorilla trek in the Parc National des Volcans is the big highlight of our trip. The current estimate is that there are only about 790 remaining mountain gorillas. Mountain gorillas are only found in this region, in the thickly forested Virunga Volcanoes, along the borders of Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and in Uganda’s nearby Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga National Park. We head to the main office of the gorilla park early the morning of the trek where we are divided into trekking groups. The gorilla trek can commence with a trek through flower farms which back on to the national park and then on to the misty lush slopes of the volcanoes. The gorillas are usually found on the ground in family groups of up to 35 individuals led by one dominant, older adult male, a silverback named after the swath of silver hair that adorns his otherwise dark fur. The family structure of a gorilla group often also includes several other young males, known as black backs, as well as females and their offspring. The young ones particularly might be seen swinging from vines and trees and can be very curious as to their daily visitors.

On the day that we are not trekking we have a spare day to see a little more and to relax. You can linger in the traditional markets and visit a local orphanage if you want. The visit to a traditional Batwa Pygmy village is always popular, and some elect to spend a second day in the forest to see the golden monkeys, or alternatively to visit the grave of Dian Fossey, who dedicated her life to protecting the mountain gorillas and whose life and work is remembered in the film ‘Gorillas in the Mist’.An evening in a local restaurant enjoying the beat of traditional Rwandan drumming and to share ourtrekking stories is also arranged for one of these two nights.

Day 4: Ruhengeri to Kigali

Meals: Breakfast

Our final morning we take the winding road back to the capital and can drop you at Chez Lando near the airport, or at Discover Rwanda Youth Hostel.

Additional Information:

If I book on a gorilla safari will I see the Gorillas ?

Absolute Africa pre-purchases gorilla permits for our gorilla safaris.

If booking on a gorilla safari you will be billed for your permit ahead of time. Once you have a permit it is 99.99% certain you will view the gorillas whilst there can never be 100% guarantees as the gorillas are wild animals and the trek is in their natural habitat. The trek to the gorillas can take from 3 to 7 hours depending on where the gorillas are. The total time you spend with them is no more than 1 hour so the gorillas are not stressed by your presence and to minimise any risk of the transmission of disease as they are so genetically close to humans. If you have any transmittable ailment that could infect the gorillas like the flu you are also not allowed to trek.

I need to get visas prior to going

Most visas are easily obtained while on safari payable on the borders in USD cash so it is not necessary to get them prior to your trip. This advice applies to most passports including Australians, New Zealanders, British and most European passport holders.

Visa costs can be found in the budget section for each individual tour. Feel free to check with our office if you are unsure about the visa requirements for your particular passport.

Take a look at our overland adventure travel insurance!

We believe that your safety and enjoyment when travelling overseas with us is very important which is why we recommend arranging cover with specialist insurance brokers Campbell Irvine Direct. Campbell Irvine have over 35years experience in adventure travel insurance.

Activities like safari walks, white water rafting on grade 5 rapids, bungee jumping, horse riding and trekking Kilimanjaro are not necessarily covered by all policies - so check out the small print carefully.
