Just come back from my amazing 34 day Zanzibar to Cape Town trip. It flew past - I had such a good time. Sam and Julius, my trip leader and driver, were awesome, really helpful and funny and had lots of interesting stories to tell. Had a great group too and have so many fantastic memories. From the white sands of Zanzibar, the smiling, waving children of Malawi, walking with lions and swimming at the top of Victoria Falls, gliding through the reeds of the Okovango Delta in a mokoro, elephants wandering through the campsite, seeing all the wildlife drinking from the watering hole at Etosha, skydiving over the Namibia dunes in Swakopmund, climbing up Dune 45 through the mist only for it to clear with the sunrise to going up to the top of Table Mountain and feeling on top of the world in Cape Town. Really want to go back and I've only been home a day. If you are hesitating about booking - just go for it! I loved every second, well maybe not taking down tents at 5am but practically every second! Acacia are a really good company, our truck seemed so much nicer than some others who didn't even have lockers inside the truck. I will be back to do the Kenya to Zanzibar leg of the trip at some point in the future and know I won't even bother looking at another company to do the trip!

Itinerary

Day 1-7: Nairobi - Masai Mara, Kenya - Arusha - Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Beginning in Nairobi we first cross the Great Rift Valley for a couple of day’s game-watching in the Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya’s premier wildlife reserve and home to the ‘Big 5’. From the ‘Mara’, we briefly head back to Nairobi before crossing into Tanzania to Arusha, from where we transfer to 4x4 vehicles for an optional 3-day excursion to the Serengeti National Park, and the Ngorongoro Crater. Both are World Heritage Sites well known for their magnificent scenery and large concentrations of game.

Day 8-14: Dar es Salaam - Zanzibar

From Arusha we drive south past the foothills of Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, to the balmy city of Dar es Salaam, the port and ferry terminal for the exotic island of Zanzibar. Once there, we get three days in this historic Arab-influenced tropical paradise to explore the capital Stone Town’s alleyways, architecture and markets, as well as the white-sand beaches fringed by palm trees where it’s impossible not to relax. Returning on the ferry to the African mainland, we leave the coast and drive via Mikumi National Park into Malawi.

Day 15-24: Lake Malawi - Livingstone, Zambia

Once on Lake Malawi, Africa’s third-largest lake, we camp for a few days on the beaches to enjoy the fresh clear water by diving, snorkelling or sailing or there are also the options of horseback riding or take a guided village walk to see how the locals live. Leaving Malawi we cross into Zambia and make our way via Lusaka, the capital, to Livingstone which is close to Victoria Falls. We view ‘the Smoke that Thunders’ to admire the Zambezi River as it tumbles more than 100 metres into the Bakota Gorge, and can also try the numerous adventure activities on offer from white water rafting and canoeing to gorge-swinging and bungy jumping.

Day 25-30: Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe - Hwange National Park - Bulawayo - Great Zimbabwe Monument

From Victoria Falls, we drive the short distance to Zimbabwe’s premier game-viewing area – Hwange National Park, where an afternoon game drive is on offer to see the large herds of elephant that the park is so famous for and perhaps see rare species like African wild dogs or brown hyena. From Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second largest city, we head into the Matobo National Park, where there is the option to track on foot to see ancient rock paintings and the last significant population of the endangered white rhino in Zimbabwe. Continuing east we visit the historical city of Great Zimbabwe – a ruined city built by the Shona people which dates to the 11th century, before crossing from Zimbabwe into Mozambique.

Day 31-39: Vilanculos - Tofo, Inhambane - Xai Xai, Mozambique - Kruger National Park, South Africa

We travel down Mozambique’s dramatically scenic coast for a few days from Vilankulos to Xai Xai to relax in the rustic resorts, enjoy the balmy climate, white-sandy beaches and seafood, and explore the clear Indian Ocean on optional snorkelling trips. We then cross the border into South Africa to the spectacular Kruger National Park for our final game drive. Home to the ‘Big 5’, this is southern Africa’s largest and best known reserve where exciting animal sightings are almost guaranteed. Finally our last day’s drive takes us west to vibrant Johannesburg, where our exciting tour ends.
