Just come back from my amazing 34 day Zanzibar to Cape Town trip. It flew past - I had such a good time. Sam and Julius, my trip leader and driver, were awesome, really helpful and funny and had lots of interesting stories to tell. Had a great group too and have so many fantastic memories. From the white sands of Zanzibar, the smiling, waving children of Malawi, walking with lions and swimming at the top of Victoria Falls, gliding through the reeds of the Okovango Delta in a mokoro, elephants wandering through the campsite, seeing all the wildlife drinking from the watering hole at Etosha, skydiving over the Namibia dunes in Swakopmund, climbing up Dune 45 through the mist only for it to clear with the sunrise to going up to the top of Table Mountain and feeling on top of the world in Cape Town. Really want to go back and I've only been home a day. If you are hesitating about booking - just go for it! I loved every second, well maybe not taking down tents at 5am but practically every second! Acacia are a really good company, our truck seemed so much nicer than some others who didn't even have lockers inside the truck. I will be back to do the Kenya to Zanzibar leg of the trip at some point in the future and know I won't even bother looking at another company to do the trip!

Day 1 – 2: Johannesburg - Kruger National Park

Our tour begins in Johannesburg, the ‘City of Gold’ and one of the most cosmopolitan cities on the African continent. Starting early, we travel east through the Mpumalanga province to the Greater Kruger area. Kruger is South Africa’s premier national park and connecting with parks in adjoining Mozambique and Botswana, covers 24,000 square kilometres of land used in the protection of African wildlife! Over dinner we enjoy a Shangaan cultural evening including traditional dance. We enjoy a full day’s game viewing in the national park, seeking wildlife encounters with Africa’s ‘Big 5’ - lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard – as well as giraffe, hippo, zebra, various antelope and a variety of amazing birdlife and reptiles.

Day 3 - 5 Kruger National Park - Limpopo Province - Bulawayo, Zimbabwe

Leaving Kruger, we move north pausing the night near the Limpopo River to the Beitbridge Border. Completing formalities at the border post we enter Zimbabwe and drive though stunning landscapes to the town of Bulawayo and on to our camp in the Matopos area. We explore the Matobo NP on foot with a resident ranger to spot game in the wild.

Day 6 - 7 Bulawayo - Livingstone, Zambia

We head up through we cross into Zambia and drive to Livingstone and our camp situated on the banks of the Zambezi River. Feed your hunger for adrenaline with white water rafting, bungee jumping, abseiling, gorge swinging and amazing scenic flights (microlight, helicopter or small plane) or enjoy the surroundings on canoeing safaris and horse riding treks. However, don’t leave without seeing the thundering Victoria Falls themselves. At over a mile wide and over 100 metres deep, the Falls produce the world’s largest curtain of falling water in the world. Up close they are formidable and at times of high water, the spray can be seen from 20 kilometres away, hence their local name Mosi au Tunya – the ‘smoke that thunders’.

NB For the sake of practicality, meals in the Livingstone/Victoria Falls area are restricted to breakfasts. This allows you to take on half day or full day activities (some of which include lunch) without having to be back with the group at mealtimes. The Waterfront camp restaurant overlooks the Zambezi River and offers a good selection of reasonably priced meals and snacks throughout the day (we suggest you allow US$25-$35/ day).

Let's save the rhino! Check out what Acacia has been up to in Livingstone, Zambia on thisYoutube video.

Day 8: Chobe National Park, Kasane

After breakfast we leave Livingstone and travel to Botswana and the Chobe National Park. Situated in the extreme northern part of Botswana, Chobe is home to large populations of elephant as well as lion and abundant birdlife, including the African fish-eagle. In the late afternoon we take a cruise on the Chobe River - a delightful way to see hippo or elephant, sometimes buffalo, come to the river for bath and drink.

Day 9-11: Nata - Maun - Okavango Delta

We drive south via Elephant Sands, Nata to the Okavango Delta. This delta is a natural wetland system spreading over some 1.6m hectares of northern Botswana, the results from rivers that rise in Angola and flow south then divide repeatedly to form an intricate floodplain of channels and islands which spreads out into a broad flat inland delta – the only one of its kind in the world. Here we explore amongst the giant lily pads, tall grasses and labyrinthine channels in search of hippo, crocodile and a variety of birds. We travel on foot and by mokoro (dugout canoe) and stay at our tented camp for a night on one of the river islands. The Okavango is a very unspoilt area and spending time out amidst the wilderness and the rivers listening to sounds of the African night is an unforgettable experience!

Day 12-13: Ghanzi - Windhoek

Leaving the Okavango we travel south-west skirting the Kalahari. We stop at Ghanzi and take a guided Bushman Walk to discover some of the secrets of this immense terrain and gain a glimpse of how the indigenous people live in this area. The following day we continue west into Namibia and stop a night in the capital Windhoek, a city steeped in German atmosphere and architecture. Enjoy the contrast from the previous few nights, perhaps with a flagon of ale at one of the local taverns.

Day 14-19: Etosha National Park - Spitzkoppe - Swakopmund

We make our way north to Etosha National Park, a vast reserve of over 20,000 square kilometres surrounding a central salt depression or ‘pan.’ The pan is seasonally filled with water but managed year-round waterholes sustain some 114 mammal and 340 bird species. We spend two nights in Etosha, camping near a floodlit waterhole which offers exciting night viewing for those who wish to stay up late. From Etosha we travel on to beautiful Damaraland and Spitzkoppe, with its rocky outcrops and ancient bushman paintings, and set up camp amongst the idyllic scenery before arriving at the colonial town of Swakopmund, Namibia’s main seaside resort. Sandwiched neatly between the desert and the ocean, this delightful coastal oasis has developed into something of an adventure centre. Try ‘quad biking, sand boarding, or skydiving (weather permitting) or for those preferring a slower pace, take a coastal walk or indulge in Swakopmund’s café culture at your own leisure.

Day 20 - 21 : Swakopmund – Namib Naukluft National Park

From Swakopmund, We continue south to the Namib Naukluft Park, the world’s oldest desert. Clamber to the top of a dune for a dramatic view over the vast red sands at dawn and enjoy a walk through the dunes. Leaving the park, we head south through the arid lands to our camp for the night.

Day 22-25: Fish River canyon – Gariep (Orange) River - Western Cape – Cape Town

Further south we visit another natural wonder of Africa - Fish River Canyon, the second-largest canyon in the world. Crossing the border into South Africa we camp on the banks of the Gariep (Orange) River and enjoy a relaxing afternoon. The tour ends in the cosmopolitan city of Cape Town, one of the world’s most attractive cities where the tour ends. If time allows we recommend you spend a few days exploring the city and surrounds. Take advantage of the variety of activities normally available here – from abseiling Table Mountain and shopping at the V&A Waterfront, to wine tasting in the nearby wine lands of Paarl and Stellenbosch.
