Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Guatemala City

Fly into Guatemala City where you will be met and transferred to your hotel in Antigua.

Day 2: Antigua City Tour

Meals: Breakfast

Volcan Fuego rises to the roof of the world above the streets of Antigua below. Once the capital of Guatemala and all Central America, Antigua resembles a living ruin. Mammoth churches and palaces tell the story of Antigua's past glory, and restored fascades speak of a bright future for this wonderful city. This morning tour the city and admire Antigua's gilded cathedrals. The afternoon is yours to rent mountain bikes to explore the countryside, visit a coffee finca or macadamia nut plantation, or just people watch in the main plaza.

Day 3: Comalapa Market and Iximche

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

This morning rise and drive about an hour before arriving to San Juan de Comalapa. Enjoy the bustle of the lively market less visited by tourists. Vendors set out their handicrafts, vegetables, and animals to sell. Explore the market and see the local painters who continue creating colorful folk art as they have for generations. See the famous mural painted by school children in 1996 depicting Guatemala's recent civil war events. Explore the town and try the bread in one of the local panaderias (bakeries) before you leave.

Next visit the Maya site of Iximché, a pre-columbian Mesoamerican archeological site abandoned in 1524. Walk among a number of pyramid temples, palaces, and two ballcourts and observe the painted murals on the sides of some complexes. Sculptures and ceramics are also displayed in the small on-site museum. Head next to the shores of beautiful Lake Atitlan, a deep caldera lake flanked by three majestic volcanoes. Settle into your charming hotel along the shores near Panajachel.

Day 4: Lake Atitlan Villages

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Today board a passenger ferry and ride across the azure-colored waters of Lake Atitlan to the village of San Juan La Laguna. Here visit the women's textile cooperative to see hand weaving and the natural dye process used to make their famous petates, woven mats made from lake reeds. You may also visit the home studios of the celebrated Naïf painters.

Continue to the village of Santiago, where villagers still adhere to the traditional lifestyle of the Tz'utuhil Maya and on our walk you'll see many people cloaked in brightly-colored, hand-woven clothing. Along Santiago's main street are art galleries filled with oil paintings depicting busy market scenes and typical life in the highlands. Scholars tell us that the ancient Maya disappeared mysteriously a thousand years ago, but anyone who has intimately explored this fascinating region knows that the Maya continue to thrive in the highlands of Guatemala. Visit Maximòn and leave an offering to this curious and revered deity. Return to Panajachel this afternoon and enjoy the rest of the day as you wish.

Day 5: Chichicastenango Market

Meals: Breakfast and Lunch

Today rise early to visit the famous market of Chichicastenango. This beautiful town, surrounded by valleys and shadowed by mountains, has many shamanistic and ceremonial overtones. Its large market brings villagers from throughout the region, who often arrive the night before and sleep on blankets in the market square. Rising early, they set out their colorful fruits, vegetables and handicrafts. The market disperses early afternoon and you drive back to Guatemala City in time for an early evening flight north to the tropical lowlands of the Peten and the home of the ancient Maya. Overnight near Flores.

Day 6: Free Day Peten Jungle

Meals: Breakfast

This day is free to enjoy the jungle of the Peten region and the gorgeous views of Lake Peten-Itza. Swim in the hotel's pool, take a kayak out on the lake, or wander into town and explore shops the quaint Colonial-style buildings that comprise the island town of Flores. Ixpanpajul National Park is nearby with a great trail system and zipline tour as well. Plan an optional excursion this day, or relax at your hotel.

Day 7: Tikal Ruins

Meals: Breakfast and Lunch

Meet up with your guide and visit the ruins of Tikal for a private tour today. Here you'll encounter towering pyramids rising above the thick jungle canopy, and learn how the city thrived as an important religious, scientific, and political center for 1500 years. The pristine forest engulfing the ruined city is home to howler and spider monkeys, white lipped peccary, brocket deer, coati-mundis, toucans, scarlet macaws, parrots, ocelots and the seldom seen jaguar. After lunch, the day is yours to explore the ruins until mid- afternoon when you return to Flores for an evening flight back to Guatemala City.

We just returned from an 8 day live-aboard ‘bucket list’ trip to the Galápagos Islands which we booked through Adventure Life. It was fantastic!!! We can’t say enough about the boat, crew and guide.

Trip Advisors Erin and Bailey from Adventure Life were eager to fulfill our wants and needs. They were excellent in listening and then clarifying details of what was important to us. The end result was a most memorable trip with big smiles and wonderful memories. It was our best trip EVER!

There was an issue and we contacted Adventure Life and spoke with the General Manager Jonathan who immediately jumped into action and remedied the situation. He was kind and thoughtful and understood our situation. We were very pleased with the end result and would not hesitate to recommend this Tour company. In fact, we will consider using them for a trip to Africa in 2020.

Thank you Erin, Bailey and Jonathan, it was such a great trip!!!

I started working with Liz on the Jewel of the Cyclades tour then had Franny as my travel coordinator. Both were friendly, responsive and very helpful.

We sailed on the ship Galileo, a tall ship, a classic motored sailor. The ship was of Greek registry which proved to be very beneficial. The captain and his mates were also Greek, as was our guide, Joseph. All were extremely knowledgeable, friendly and super service oriented. The ship was clean and well maintained and the itinerary was well planned. We had a fabulous time (we were an extensss family of 6) and were fortunate to have a great ship filled with warm, friendly guests from around the world. Food and service were all fabulous. A great way to see these beautiful islands. I would definitely use Adventure Life again.

My mother and I took an amazing trip down the Rhine River! Everything was absolutely wonderful! From the moment we stepped onto the Amasonata and were greeted by the reception desk, to the morning we left the ship, everything went according to the plan. The planning with Franny and Callie was excellent and due to their hard work, we had a wonderful vacation. We had picked our excursions online before we left but the people who hadn't or changed their mind were treated with the utmost respect. The "guides" for the excursions were on time, every time, knowledgeable and friendly. I could go on and on but this says it all! It was perfectly amazing! I will go again if I can.

Kassandra and Franny facilitated a complicated adventure with a personal dedication and care to meet the wishes of myself and my son on a Quark Expedition to the Southern Ocean via the Falklands, Elephant island, South Georgia, the South Shetlands the Antarctic Peninsular and the Continent lasting about a month. Every aspect of the travel was accomplished without a hitch and every bit of detailed information they provided proved to be vital.
The Quark expedition was recommended by Franny and again met every aspect of our personal expectations. A truly remarkable, once-in-a-lifetime experience that was enhanced by the knowledge and professionals at Adventure Life.

I just returned from a month-long adventure in the Indian Ocean. It began in the Seychelles on a four-day cruise on Variety's Pegasus where we visited several islands, explored shallow waterways and swam and snorkeled. The small (42 guests) catamaran was perfect for such excursions. I then spent two days alone in Mahe (the largest island) during which time I explored on my own. The next step of my adventure was flying to the Maldives where I boarded Silversea's ship, the Silver Discoverer. This luxury liner had only 72 guests and was small enough to feel cozy while still offering amazing accommodations and pampering. Aboard the Discoverer, we sailed to some remote (and uninhabited) islands in the Maldvies archipelago, using the Zodiacs to reach some amazing beaches and reefs. The experts on board (ornithologists, marine biologists, anthropologists, etc) made sure we were well-versed in the wildlife and culture we encountered. After we left the Maldives, we sailed to the islands of Southern India to experience a combination of culture and nature. I ended my stay in Colombo on my own, taking private tours of the city arranged by Adventure Life, including my favorite, a walking "foodie" tour in which we sampled various Sri Lankan street foods. Last spring I stumbled upon Adventure Life, and simply told them what I wanted (to visit places in the Indian Ocean where I had never been). They tailored my adventure to my specific wants and needs (a solo, older, female traveler), and put together this great itenerary. Franny worked with me before and during the trip, and when minor hiccups occurred during the stay, she was easily accessible to answer my questions and find solutions. All in all, a great trip arranged by a company who cares about its travelers and is willing to work with them to design the perfect adventure!
