Short Description

A Historical Hiking Tour of Peru. Peru has it all: rich history, enduring mysticism, natural wonders and vibrant culture. The gods the Incas worshipped can be felt amongst the temple ruins and verdant mountains. The Quechua legacy can be tasted in authentic Peruvian dishes and felt in weaving patterns handed down across the ages. And the Inca Trail embodies everything Peru: past and future. Join us on an indulgent journey through Peru’s panoramas as you trek along the Inca Trail—South America’s most iconic trek in First Class style. Follow in the footsteps of ancient civilizations with stunning views of the Urubamba River and the encompassing snow-capped mountains. As you make your way to the lost city of Machu Picchu, tucked away into a jungle, discover lesser-known Incan ruins and fall asleep in luxury, immersed in wild Peruvian landscapes. Peru is still full of secrets: have fun uncovering them as you take a walk through history.

Small groups are usually defined as between 10 and 24 travelers, often less. If you're the kind of person who enjoys more intimate experiences and personal service this is a good choice. All else being equal you will pay a premium for this style vs a larger group tour.

Itinerary

Day 1: Lima Peru

Accommodation: 4* Lima Hotel

Fly into Lima, where your Peruvian adventure takes off. A Peru Unbound representative greets you upon arrival and escorts you to your hotel. Enjoy an evening exploring Lima’s many delicious dining options before bed!

Day 2: Lima, Cusco and The Sacred Valley

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: 4* Sacred Valley Hotel

Depart from Lima early with a flight to Cusco. From there, today’s journey takes you into the verdant reaches of the Sacred Valley. On the way, we stop at the vibrant Pisac Market, where Peruvian locals travel from across the region to sell and buy authentic goods. Relax with a fresh lunch before continuing our journey to the sprawling city of Ollantaytambo. This fortress represents the best of Incan urban planning, and you can wonder at the temples, terraces, quarries, military defenses and storehouses—not to mention the impressively large boulders and stone structures the Incas used to decorate.

This evening finds you in the Sacred Valley, where you enjoy an authentic Peruvian dinner before bed.

Day 3: Explore Chinchero, Maras and Moray

Meals Included: Breakfast, Deluxe Picnic Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: 4* Sacred Valley Hotel

Begin your morning with a journey to the town of Chinchero, where you come upon the ruins of an ancient Incan palace, a Spanish colonial church and impressive stacks of cultivation terraces. From there we make our way to the town of Maras, perhaps best known for being littered with saltwater pools known as “trabajos de sal.” Locals visit these pools to collect the salt remaining from the evaporated water. If we have time, you will continue your exploration into Peru’s agriculture with a visit to Moray, a town which still boasts fine cultivation terraces. Scholars believe the Incas attempted to adapt plants to the region’s high altitude by creating microclimates here.

This evening, return to the Sacred Valley for another night of exploration and fine dining!

Day 4: Hiking the Inca Trail from KM 82 to Huayllabama

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Glamping at Huayllabamba

Enjoy a hearty breakfast before traveling to Piscakucho, also known as the Km 82, where we set off on the Inca Trail escorted by porters. Trek along the Urubamba River with magnificent views of the snow-capped mountains that encompass the Sacred Valley. As you hike, discover Incan ruins hidden amongst the semi-arid terrain. Arrive at the first campsite, Huayllabamba, by late afternoon to enjoy a hot shower and perhaps a massage before a fine dinner cooked by your personal chef.

Hiking Distance: Km. 82 to Huayllabamba: 11 km / 6 hours app

Day 5: Hike from Huayllabamba to Pacaymayo

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Glamping at at Pacaymayo

Hiking Distance: Huayllabamba - Pacaymayo: 7km / 7 hours app

A greater hiking challenge faces you today. Enjoy a healthy breakfast surrounded by incredible views before setting off toward the Warmihuañusca Pass. From here, you may see the paths leading to the Runkurakay ruins and the Vilcabamba mountain range. Relax and soak in the views before beginning on the second stretch of the hike: a descent to Pacaymayo, where we make up your luxury camp.  Enjoy a glass of champagne or classic pisco sour before another delicious dinner prepared by your chef.

Day 6: Hike from Pacaymayo to Phuyupatamarca

Meals Included : Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Galamping at at Phuyupatamarca

Hiking Distance: Pacaymayo – Phuyupatamarca: 7 km / 5 hours

Rise to breathtaking sights and fresh air before departing Pacaymayo. A zigzagging, but short, ascent takes you to the circular Runkurakay ruins. Explore and take in the sweeping views before descending the well-preserved stone Inca road.

Our trek eventually takes you to the steps leading to the Sayacmarca ruins, from which the stone road continues into the lush jungle and the Phuyupatamarca ruins. A highlight of today is crossing “The Tunnel”—a natural cavity produced by a landslide but then adapted by the Incas. Cross a small pass before coming to some steep steps under which lies the ceremonial center of the Phuyupatamarca ruins. Here, amongst nature and history, we make camp for the day.

Day 7: Hike Phuyupatamarca to Wiñaywayna and on to Macchu Picchu

Meals Included: Breakfast and Lunch

Accommodation: 4* Aguas Calientes Hotel

Hiking Distance: Phuypatamarca – Wiñaywayna - Machupicchu: 9 km

Continue along the Inca Trail this morning as you make your way to Wiñaywayna, the main archaeological site after Machu Picchu citadel. Explore the site’s rich history and stunning views of the Urubamba valley and river.

The path then leads you to the Wiñay Wayna ruins and then on to Inti Punku, or the Gate of the Sun—our last pass for the day. From the Gate of the Sun, the extensive sprawl of Machu Picchu looks as surreal as it looks beautiful. Enjoy the views before resting your legs with a ride to Aguas Calientes, where you can relax after a long day and indulge in a delicious dinner.

Day 8: Aguas Calientes, Machu Picchu and Cusco

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: 4* Cusco Hotel

Wake up to a fresh breakfast before traveling to Machu Picchu City for a different look at the incredible lost city. Visit the Intihuatana temple, the temple of the moon, the sun gate, ceremonial fountain and terraces as you wander this ancient citadel.

This afternoon, travel back to Aguas Calientes before returning to Cusco by train. Enjoy a relaxed farewell dinner at one of Cusco’s final restaurant before bed.

Day 9: Cusco City Tour and Transfer to Airport

Meals Included: Breakfast

Fit in a final morning of exploration on the last day of your Peruvian adventure. This morning takes you to Cusco’s Historical Centre, where you discover Huacaypata, or the Warrior’s Square, as well as the Spanish colonial El Triunfo constructed on top of the ancient temple of Suntur Was (House of God). Our tour continues on to the Convent of Santo Domingo, also constructed on top of Incan ruins. Below the church lies the Incan temple Koricancha, or Temple of the Sun, said to have walls plated in gold. Lastly, visit the ruins of the city of Cusco as well as the massive Incan fortress Sacsayhuamán.

After this morning’s tour through history, travel to the Cusco airport to meet your return flight home.

They have a no-nonsense ambience.
The Dormitory is adequate, very clean and comfortable.
The food was very tasty, homely and had a good variety.
The activities catered to our satisfaction. They are provided with lots of patience. Every staff member is so friendly and they ensure that you enjoy the outing.
We were a family with people from all are groups. They took care of every individual needs. Our aged mother was made very comfortable, and they arranged a chair for her at every activity area.
We spent almost two days and one night. And we enjoyed every moment.
If one is looking for a good outing, this is the place. Total value for money. Above all it's the passion of the staff that makes them better than most places around Bangalore.

Just a couple of weeks ago, our team had been to ‘Eagles Unbound Adventure Camp’ for a team outing. It was one of the best outings that we have had and a lot of credit goes to Mr. Sunil Chris for being the perfect host. He and his team had ensured that every minute detail was taken into consideration and delivered as promised. The fact that the organizers were able to feel the pulse of our team and plan activities accordingly had built the right tone for team bonding. The hygiene and quality of food served was par excellence. I would recommend ‘Eagles Unbound’ to anyone planning a team outing.

Additional Information:

When is the best time to visit Peru?

Weather in Peru varies by region, for the coast (Lima, Ica, Nazca, Mancora, Trujillo) the best time to visit are the months of November to March when it is summer on the coast. In February in particular you have events like Carnaval, a very fun time of year on the coast. You can visit coastal cities during the winter (June to August) but Lima will be fairly overcast and cold as well as some other coastal cities.

For Andean cities such as Cusco, Ayacucho, Huaraz, Puno and Cajamarca the best time to visit is during their dry season which runs from May to September. During this time you can expect warm days and chilly nights and very little rain.

The Amazon Jungles of Peru have two season and they both can be equally rewarding. If seeing lots of birds and mammals (and enjoying a slightly cooler temperature) is your thing, then the December to May might be your best choice. (Remember: Despite being the "rainy" season, the Amazon only gets about 10% more rain than falls in the low water season). If jungle hikes, exotic migratory on their way through Amazonia, still having the chance to see monkeys and other mammals, and going on great fishing expeditions top your list, you might be happier choosing the warmer, low water season (June - November).

Do I need a Visa to visit Peru?

U.S citizens do not need a visa to visit Peru as long as it's a tourist visit of less than 90 days. You will be given your visa upon arrival in Lima. It's important that you hold on to this visa as many hotels will ask to see this document in order to exempt you from the IGV or Peruvian Sales Tax.

As Visa and Entry Requirements can change without prior notice, we recommend you check the current regulations before your trip to Peru with the nearest Peruvian Consulate or Embassy.

Do I need any medications or vaccinations to visit Peru?

There are no required vaccinations to visit Peru unless you plan to visit remote areas of the Peruvian Amazon, in which case you will need a yellow fever shot and you may want to take malaria medication as well. The Puerto Maldonado and Iquitos areas have not seen cases of either Malaria or Yellow fever in recent times.

Check with your Travel doctor regarding visiting Peru, we strongly recommend you bring medications for bacterial infections (Ciprofloxacin) that can affect your stomach as well as antidiarrheal medication (Immodium). Dramamine is also great for Altitude and motion sickness. For more Health Information for Travelers in Peru visit the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website.

Altitude sickness, also known as Soroche in Peru, occurs when there is not enough oxygen reaching your brain. This typically occurs at elevations over 10,000ft. Shortness of breath and a pounding heart are the first symptoms as the thin air in high altitude can make you feel light headed and dizzy. As your symptoms progress you can get extremely nauseous and suffer from vomiting and intense headaches if not remedied by either medication or descending in altitude.

Preventing altitude sickness is easy, always allow for an extra day to acclimate when you visit in a location with high altitude. Relax in your hotel and lie down, drink plenty of fluids and avoid strenuous exercise. It can take up to a week to become full acclimated, many travelers don't have that amount of time so in order to acclimate fastest it is best to take it easy, avoid alcohol, cigarettes and heavy foods. If you begin to feel mild symptoms then we recommend you drink some Coca Tea (legal in Peru), even drinking carbonated drinks like Coca Cola help. It's important to realize that you get altitude sickness by not feeding your brain enough oxygen, so make sure you are breathing well, take decongestants if you have a cold or can't breathe well. Prescription medications such as Diamox can also be a great help.

In the higher elevation locations such as Cusco it is possible to purchase oxygen and buy medications in case you are having a real hard time acclimating.  Most larger hotels in these areas can also offer extra oxygen to be pumped in your room for an additional charge.

Should I purchase travel insurance before my trip?

Travel insurance is recommended to protect your trip as well as your belongings and scheduling should any unforeseen events arise. Guests must provide their own travel insurance. If you decide not to purchase travel insurance then you are directly responsible for your own belongings and wellbeing. Our guides will always be around to help you should any situation arise, however when it comes to paying for any medical expenses or additional flights due to airline cancellations, you will be responsibile for these.
