Short Description

A Journey Through Antarctica's Iconic Locations. Cruise from the Falkland Islands through the dramatic landscapes of the South Shetlands and the Antarctic Peninsula on this exhilarating 10-day expedition. Visit historic huts and working scientific bases, explore the photogenic iceberg “graveyard” at Pleneau Island, get up close to Adelie and Gentoo penguins on Petermann Island and cruise through the spectacular Lemaire Channel.

Small groups are usually defined as between 10 and 24 travelers, often less. If you're the kind of person who enjoys more intimate experiences and personal service this is a good choice. All else being equal you will pay a premium for this style vs a larger group tour.

Itinerary

Day 1: Punta Arenas, Chile

Meals Included: Dinner

Accommodation: Akademik Ioffe or Akademik Sergey Vavilov

Your expedition begins in Chile’s southern city of Punta Arenas where you will board a 90-minute flight to the Falkland Islands’ capital of Stanley. You’ll have time to explore its brightly colored houses and rich history before embarking the ship and setting sail for Antarctica.

Day 2-3: Southern Ocean

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Akademik Ioffe or Akademik Sergey Vavilov

We’ll spend the next couple of days sailing across the Southern Ocean, keeping an eye out for seabirds, including wandering albatross, which can often be seen soaring above. There’ll be plenty of time to attend educational presentations by your Expedition Team about the natural and human history of the destinations we will be visiting over the coming days. Or join your Captain on the bridge to learn all about the operations of this modern research vessel.

If conditions are favorable, we may also make a stop at historic Elephant Island where Shackleton and his men camped under their overturned lifeboats before setting out on a rescue mission to South Georgia.

Day 4-5: King George Island

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Akademik Ioffe or Akademik Sergey Vavilov

Wake to the snow-blanketed landscapes of King George Island, the largest in the South Shetlands archipelago, with landing sites this morning dependent on weather conditions. As you enjoy lunch on board, we’ll continue cruising south through the Bransfield Strait which serves as an important migration corridor for marine animals.

As the towering peaks of the Antarctic Peninsula gradually come into view, immense icebergs will provide a dramatic setting for photography. We’ll aim to land near Wilhelmina Bay where large pods of humpback whales are often encountered during zodiac excursions.

Day 6-8: Antarctic Peninsula and Antarctic Circle

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Akademik Ioffe or Akademik Sergey Vavilov

Soak up the spectacular scenery on board as we navigate through the iceberg-strewn waters towards the Antarctic Circle. We’ll continue into Crystal Sound and land on Detaille Island which is home to an abandoned 1950s British science hut.

From here our journey continues north along the dramatic coastline of the Antarctic Peninsula, with stops at a working scientific base to learn about the climate-related research being conducted here. Depending on weather conditions, we may also camp onshore overnight for what is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Other destinations over the next few days may include Petermann Island which is home to a rookery of the Antarctic’s smallest penguins, Adelie, as well as Gentoo penguins and imperial cormorants. We may also embark on a zodiac excursion through the shallows which surround Pleneau Island where wind and wave action have sculpted icebergs into spectacular formations.

Day 9-10: Antarctic Peninsula and Deception Island

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Akademik Ioffe or Akademik Sergey Vavilov

Cruise through the magnificent Lemaire Channel as we make our way north towards Paradise Harbour and Neko Harbour. It is here that you may take your first steps on the Antarctic continent itself.

Then continue on to the South Shetlands Islands where (weather conditions permitting) we will sail into the flooded volcanic caldera of Deception Island. It was here that the Australian aviation pioneer, Sir Hubert Wilkins, made the first flight to Antarctica in 1928. We may also land at Half Moon Island or on the pebbly beach at Yankee Harbour during zodiac excursions.

Day 11: King George Island and Punta Arenas, Chile

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Punta Arenas Hotel

During the night we will arrive at King George Island where you will disembark the ship in the morning and be transferred to the airstrip for the two-hour flight to Punta Arenas. Voyages include a complimentary hotel night in Punta Arenas at the end of your voyage.

They are just great!!!
They have a no-nonsense ambience.
The Dormitory is adequate, very clean and comfortable.
The food was very tasty, homely and had a good variety.
The activities catered to our satisfaction. They are provided with lots of patience. Every staff member is so friendly and they ensure that you enjoy the outing.
We were a family with people from all are groups. They took care of every individual needs. Our aged mother was made very comfortable, and they arranged a chair for her at every activity area.
We spent almost two days and one night. And we enjoyed every moment.
If one is looking for a good outing, this is the place. Total value for money. Above all it's the passion of the staff that makes them better than most places around Bangalore.

Just a couple of weeks ago, our team had been to ‘Eagles Unbound Adventure Camp’ for a team outing. It was one of the best outings that we have had and a lot of credit goes to Mr. Sunil Chris for being the perfect host. He and his team had ensured that every minute detail was taken into consideration and delivered as promised. The fact that the organizers were able to feel the pulse of our team and plan activities accordingly had built the right tone for team bonding. The hygiene and quality of food served was par excellence. I would recommend ‘Eagles Unbound’ to anyone planning a team outing.

  • Both the Vavilov and Ioffe ships are amazing vessels. They are sister ships, so very similar in many ways.  Please see below for specifics for each ship.

Akademic Vavilov

The Scandinavian-built Vavilov sails like a silent dream out on the water. Highly maneuverable yet remarkably stable, the Vavilov was built for both science and adventure. It can endure voyages of any arctic condition while maintaining a cruising speed of 14.5 knots.

The Vavilov and the Ioffe together are two of the most capable adventure vessels around.

From Peter Grubb - Founder of ROW Adventures
"The Vavilov and it's sister ship, the Ioffe, are 2 of the most advanced research vessels afloat. The Vavilov is impressive and neat as a pin,..which is refered to as 'Bristol Condition' in sailing terms. The ship is operated by one of the largest and oldest shipping companies. Our team has sailed on this ship many times and are always impressed with the service and the ship."

Akademic Ioffe

Primed for polar research, the Ioffe is an up-to-date, safe, spacious and all-around solid vessel. The common areas on board this boat are crafted with ultimate comfort in mind, whether you're attending an informative lecture or simply hanging out. With a fully stocked bar and variety of films available in the lounge, you can relax and unwind after a day of adventure just the way you want.

Other fabulous onboard facilities include an exercise room, ship store, massage room, sauna and pool. Then of course there's the great dining offered up in our superb dining room. An expert and professional staff member is always at the ready to tend to any need.

As it was originally crafted as a research vessel hailing from Finland, the Ioffe is a very graceful, peaceful and accommodating ship. You'll marvel at how quietly and smoothly she sails and appreciate the transformation she's undergone in order to shift her focus from science to adventure.

The last thing you'll want when you're trying to enjoy an Antarctic cruise is a rocky and noisy ship; such things are unheard of on the Ioffe thanks to her clever design. A ballast trimming system ensures that sea sickness is kept to a minimum, while noisy engines are situated far out of earshot.
