Itinerary

Day 1: Longyearbyen

Meals Included: Dinner

Accommodation: Akademik Ioffe

Embark your expedition ship in Longyearbyen and take in the views on deck as we set sail through Adventfjorden and into Isfjorden. From here we’ll enter the vast expanse of the Greenland Sea, then head south along the coast of Spitsbergen.

Day 2: Bourbonhamna

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Akademik Ioffe

This morning we will transit the narrow sound near Bourbonhamna where some of Svalbard’s thousands of white beluga whales are frequently spotted. Jump aboard the zodiacs to get up close to these unique creatures then step ashore at Ingebrigstenbukta to explore its old hunting cabin. Wander around the huge piles of beluga whale bones which are now protected by the state and hopefully catch a glimpse of the wild reindeer which inhabit the region.

Day 3: Storfjorden

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Akademik Ioffe

As we reach the southernmost point of Spitsbergen, we’ll continue into Storfjorden to explore Dolerittneset near Kapp Lee. Ancient whale bones here have been sculpted by the elements into unique works of art, providing fantastic photographic opportunities in all colors of moss and lichen.

Day 4: Hornsund

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Akademik Ioffe

We’ll cruise along the west coast of Spitsbergen to explore its glacier-filled bays as we sail into Hornsund. Your onboard experts will lead you on hikes and zodiac cruises to gain a better understanding of the region’s glacial history and how this spectacular landscape was formed.

Day 5: Lilliehock Glacier

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Akademik Ioffe

We’ll cruise along the rocky shores of Krossfjorden and anchor in a protected harbor to explore the bird cliffs near the 14th of July Glacier. Keep an eye out for bearded and ringed seals which often play in the dark waters of the fjord, before continuing on to Lilliehook Glacier at the northwestern head of Krossfjorden. The face of this glacier stretches almost seven kilometers in length and 80 meters high, making for a spectacular sight.

As we sail out of the fjord, keep an eye out for the historic airship anchor pylon near Ny Ålesund which was used as the starting point for North Pole aviation exploration. We will also visit Smeerenburgfjorden which boasts a 400-year-old whaling history.

Day 6: Phippsoya

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Akademik Ioffe

Over the next couple of days we will venture 81 degrees north to Phippsoya which lies just 540 nautical miles from the North Pole. We’ll navigate its ice pack in comfort and safety while keeping an eye out for polar bears, walrus, bearded and ringed seals which often frequent these waters.

Day 7: Hinlopen Strait

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Akademik Ioffe

Cruise through Hinlopen Strait which separates Spitsbergen and Nordaustlandet, and past the bird cliffs of Alkefjellet where 60,000 pairs of Brünnich’s Guillemot nest, together with thousands of kittiwakes and black guillemots. We’ll also visit nearby Murchison Fjord to go kayaking or on a zodiac excursion between the two islands, then hike to an elevated viewpoint to take in the staggering views.

Day 8: Liefdefjorden and Monaco Glacier

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Akademik Ioffe

We’ll enter Liefjefjorden and cruise towards the Monaco Glacier which offers a spectacular setting for kayaking and zodiac excursions. The seven kilometer-wide face features ice caves and tumbling seracs, together with thousands of black-legged kittiwakes which feed on the nutrient-rich glacial outflow.

The tundra at the mouth of Liefdefjorden also provides a superb hiking destination. Purple sandpipers and red phalaropes can be spotted amidst the remains of fox traps and sun bleached seal bones which are reminders of the human history here.

Day 9: Alkehornet

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Akademik Ioffe

Cruise to Alkehornet at the mouth of Isfjord for a spectacular tundra walk to spot Arctic fox and reindeer. A horn-shaped mount dominates the landscape here, with guillemots and kittiwakes among the myriad of bird species spotted.

Then return to the ship to celebrate your final night on board with a special dinner attended by your Captain as you reflect on the wild and remote landscapes you have encountered.

Day 10: Longyearbyen

We will arrive back in Longyearbyen in the morning to disembark the ship and be transferred either into town or to the airport for your return flight to Tromso or Oslo.

They are just great!!!
They have a no-nonsense ambience.
The Dormitory is adequate, very clean and comfortable.
The food was very tasty, homely and had a good variety.
The activities catered to our satisfaction. They are provided with lots of patience. Every staff member is so friendly and they ensure that you enjoy the outing.
We were a family with people from all are groups. They took care of every individual needs. Our aged mother was made very comfortable, and they arranged a chair for her at every activity area.
We spent almost two days and one night. And we enjoyed every moment.
If one is looking for a good outing, this is the place. Total value for money. Above all it's the passion of the staff that makes them better than most places around Bangalore.

Just a couple of weeks ago, our team had been to ‘Eagles Unbound Adventure Camp’ for a team outing. It was one of the best outings that we have had and a lot of credit goes to Mr. Sunil Chris for being the perfect host. He and his team had ensured that every minute detail was taken into consideration and delivered as promised. The fact that the organizers were able to feel the pulse of our team and plan activities accordingly had built the right tone for team bonding. The hygiene and quality of food served was par excellence. I would recommend ‘Eagles Unbound’ to anyone planning a team outing.

Accomodations

Both the Vavilov and Ioffe ships are amazing vessels. They are sister ships, so very similar in many ways.  Please see below for specifics for each ship.

Akademic Vavilov

The Scandinavian-built Vavilov sails like a silent dream out on the water. Highly maneuverable yet remarkably stable, the Vavilov was built for both science and adventure. It can endure voyages of any arctic condition while maintaining a cruising speed of 14.5 knots.

The Vavilov and the Ioffe together are two of the most capable adventure vessels around.

From Peter Grubb - Founder of ROW Adventures
"The Vavilov and it's sister ship, the Ioffe, are 2 of the most advanced research vessels afloat. The Vavilov is impressive and neat as a pin,..which is refered to as 'Bristol Condition' in sailing terms. The ship is operated by one of the largest and oldest shipping companies. Our team has sailed on this ship many times and are always impressed with the service and the ship."

Ship Specifications:

  • Staff & Crew: 53
  • Guests: 92
  • Length: 117.04m
  • Breadth: 18.28 m
  • Draft: 6.09m
  • Propulsion: 5,000 KW diesel twin engine
  • Ice Class: KM*L1(1)A2, Canadian Type B
  • Cruising Speed: 14.5 knots in open water

Amenities:

  • One dining room with unreserved seating.
  • Theatre-style presentation room.
  • Lounge and bar, open late afternoon and evening with a wide selection of wines and spirits.
  • Library with a collection of polar-themed books.
  • Ship-to-shore communications via satellite.
  • Clinic with licensed doctor.
  • Gym, sauna and swimming pool.
  • One elevator between passenger deck levels and to the Bridge level.

Akademic Ioffe

Primed for polar research, the Ioffe is an up-to-date, safe, spacious and all-around solid vessel. The common areas on board this boat are crafted with ultimate comfort in mind, whether you're attending an informative lecture or simply hanging out. With a fully stocked bar and variety of films available in the lounge, you can relax and unwind after a day of adventure just the way you want.

Other fabulous onboard facilities include an exercise room, ship store, massage room, sauna and pool. Then of course there's the great dining offered up in our superb dining room. An expert and professional staff member is always at the ready to tend to any need.

As it was originally crafted as a research vessel hailing from Finland, the Ioffe is a very graceful, peaceful and accommodating ship. You'll marvel at how quietly and smoothly she sails and appreciate the transformation she's undergone in order to shift her focus from science to adventure.

The last thing you'll want when you're trying to enjoy an Antarctic cruise is a rocky and noisy ship; such things are unheard of on the Ioffe thanks to her clever design. A ballast trimming system ensures that sea sickness is kept to a minimum, while noisy engines are situated far out of earshot.
