  • Experience the incredible Amazon Rainforest
  • Explore Cusco & traditional Andean Villages in the Sacred Valley

Short Description

This special program offers a stunning variety of scenic, archaeological and cultural experiences! From Lima, we travel to the upper Amazon basin, a pristine rainforest in Southeastern Peru, spending two nights at one of the unique lodges in the area, allowing a fantastic Amazon rainforest experience. Then, our short flight from Puerto Maldonado to Cusco will let us enjoy the Inca Capital, visit some remote Andean villages, and tour off-the-beaten-track Inca sites. We end with a visit to the fabled Machu Picchu Sanctuary, by way of the Vistadome train, or alternatively, a one day hike on the famed Inca Trail and entering through the Sun Gate.

Groups are between 25-60 people, typically ~30-40. Usually there will be many opportunities to split off and enjoy meals and excursions in smaller groups. This is the most economical way to travel, saving up to 40% versus booking the same itinerary yourself.

On this afternoon's Cusco city tour, you will visit Sacsayhuaman, a hilltop fortress that overlooks the city of Cusco. The largest stones used in its construction are nearly 8.5 m (28 ft) high and weigh 360 tons, fitting so perfectly together that a single piece of paper would not fit between two stones. Then you are driven to Kenko, the temple dedicated to Mother Earth. Before you head back to Cusco we stop at Puka Pukara (the red fortress) and Tambomachay (the resting place of the Inca). Once in the city visit the Santo Domingo Monastery, the legendary Korikancha (Temple of Gold), the most important Inca temple devoted to worshipping the Sun, whose walls used to be plated with sheets of gold. You continue to the Cathedral at the Plaza de Armas. Overnight in Cusco.

Enjoy lunch in a local restaurant. In the afternoon, you visit Ollantaytambo, a still-thriving Inca village set below an ancient Inca fortress and temple with stunning views over the valley that makes you feel as if you have stepped back into the 15th century. Admire the magnificence of this important Inca site and stroll through the quaint streets of the present town.

Overnight in the Sacred Valley.

Option #1: Arrive via Train. With your guide, you will connect with the Vistadome train to Machu Picchu. Early transfer from your hotel to the train station in the Sacred Valley, for your two hour Vistadome train down the Urubamba gorge as it changes from mountain vegetation to cloud forest, arrival at the station of Machu Picchu Pueblo. A shuttle bus ride will bring you to the citadel for a guided visit (tour is in a group); afternoon return to the village where we will spend the night in Aguas Calientes.

* Option #2: Arrive via a short Trek. You can choose to hike the Inca Trail Express! Transfer to the train station for the Vistadome train to Machu Picchu. An ever narrowing gorge brings your group to km 104, where you begin your guided hike on the famed Inca Trail. Hiking past Chachabamba, a three hour ascent through highland grasses and small gulleys, brings you to Winay Wayna. Lunch is usually in this vicinity. From here, a winding trail takes you through a cloud forest, cutting across a ridge, and bringing you finally to the gate of the sun, Intipunku, with a spectacular view of the citadel of Machu Picchu below. Arriving at Machu Picchu later in the afternoon, you will take a shuttle bus to Aguas Calientes. Overnight Aguas Calientes. Lunch included with the trek.

I have had the pleasure of leading two charity treks up Kilimanjaro for Innocent Eyes Project with the help of Adventures Within Reach. Before you get to the mountain, there is a ton of planning and a lot of decisions to make. Working with AWR made my job easy. They answered questions directly from my group and made sure everyone knew exactly what to expect. When we got to Tanzania, they were on top of all the details and the team that led us on our climb was a true pleasure. Travel can certainly be an adventure, but having a great partner like AWR can make all the difference.

Really great people! I was really happy with how much help I was given by the people at AWR. I had a customized itinerary for a trip from Cusco to Lake Titicaca in Peru and could not have had a better experience. I can't wait to try AWR's tours in other places.

I love this company. I am a single woman who has safely and confidently traveled all over the world with the help of AWR. I have signed up for their packages and they have custom made adventures for me as well. I highly recommend their entire team. Given the amount of travel I do something will go wrong, but AWR has always been there to correct it as soon as possible.
