Highlights
  • Sail in all suite ship or a high-value larger luxury vessel.
  • Sail Antarctica in comfort on a classic itinerary.
  • Many voyages feature optional adventure activities like camping and sea kayaking!

We are very happy to offer two outstanding expedition vessels that offer comparable service yet highly unique individual advantages. The Ocean Diamond can be classified as a luxury ship yet due to her larger size (189 passengers) the prices are lower than most Antarctic cruises. Alternatively, the 114-passenger Sea Spirit is a well appointed "all-suite" luxury vessel with a hot tub, gymnasium, lounge, open bar, and more with the smallest cabins sized at a spacious 215 feet.

Trip Description

Encountering the unexpected is an integral aspect of any true expedition travel experience. No itinerary is ever 100% guaranteed to see everything outlined in a program “on paper.” A modest degree of flexibility is vital along with a spirit of adventure for the success of any expedition. There are nearly 200 recognized sites in the Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetlands and the places mentioned in the day-to-day plan may be changed to others just as compelling.

Due to the remoteness of the areas in which the ship travels, travelers must have comprehensive travel insurance coverage including a minimum $50,000 of emergency medical coverage. The ship requires proof of coverage prior to embarkation.

In addition to the shorter 11 day cruises, these ships also have longer 19-day Falklands, South Georgia and Antarctica expeditions running in November, December, and January: please contact us for dates, rates, and itinerary details.

I recently traveled to Kenya for 2 weeks and then to Tanzania to climb Mt Kilimanjaro (booked through AWR). Not only were they helpful in all of my trip planning before leaving, but even when I was already traveling they helped with some last minute changes that needed to be made. I was in rural parts of Kenya with limited internet access, and yet AWR managed to help me make last minute changes and everything went smoothly.
Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro is probably the most memorable experience of my life thus far. It was AMAZING. I felt that before leaving AWR was very informative as to what I needed to do to prepare, what I needed to pack, etc.... I looked at some other travel sites to compare information, and AWR definitely had some of the most comprehensive and helpful information without it being overwhelming. I would definitely recommend booking at of your adventure travel plans through AWR.

With the help of Adventures Within Reach, I, as a 70-year old and a group of 1 plus porters, climbed Mt Kilimanjaro in Jan 2014.
Adventures Within Reach helped provide me with an excellent experience.
Great group to work with and were my partner in planning, info gathering, reservations, etc.
The true experience for me includes to decisions, planning, training, info gathering, reservations, etc; not just the successful climb.
Provided me with answers and additional questions I should ask.
Provided well organized list of documents that provided details.
Hotel, ground travel, air travel, guides, etc all were 5 star.

My wife and I took the 5 day group safari in Tanzania in July. Bebe and Robin were both responsive to our questions prior to the trip. The crew in Tanzania was also very attentive. We were to be picked up at an off-the-beaten-path location and they called several times to make sure they knew where they were supposed to go. And then the actual trip. It was fantastic. Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro. We saw every animal you would expect to see on a safari. The guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. The accommodations were wonderful. My wife and I both agree that this was the best trip we have ever been on and we are already looking for a way that we can get back and do it all again.

I went on AWR's Tanzania adventure, climbing Kilimanjaro and going on Safari. This was the most wonderful trip! Every step was well thought out and seamlessly orchestrated. The AWR staff was very helpful in arranging the trip and the Tanzania Journeys company was spectacular in their attentiveness, knowledge and responsiveness to all our traveler's needs. I highly recommend this travel company, and in particular, this trip.

Itinerary

Day 1 : Arrive and overnight Ushuaia

Visiting: Ushuaia, Argentina

With a population over 60,000 people, Ushuaia is the southernmost city in the world. The city has grown over the past few years, yet it has retained an easy going and accessible feel. With the sea to the south and mountains to the north, Ushuaia is a spectacular departure point for your Antarctic cruise. If you arrive early, you can spend some time in the nearby Tierra del Fuego National Park, enjoy some Argentinean wines and classic meals in the city, or visit the many boutique shops and cafes before for your expedition to Antarctica.

Day 2: Board the ship and begin your expedition

Meals: Dinner

Accommodation: Luxury Lodging: Sea Spirit or Ocean Diamond

Visiting: South Atlantic

Today board your vessel in the late afternoon after which you will sail down the historic Beagle Channel. This body of water transects the Tierra del Fuego archipelago in the extreme south of South America. Expect an air of excitement as we depart - the next time you see land we’ll be in the world’s most southern continent!

Day 3: Sailing the Drake's Passage

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Luxury Lodging: Sea Spirit or Ocean Diamond

Visiting: South Atlantic

Prepare yourself for potentially rough seas, however sometimes we encounters smooth sailings as the Drake is unpredictable and always changing. You’ll spend today and tomorrow getting to know your fellow passengers, while the crew will provide safety briefings and insights into the excitement that lies directly ahead.

Day 4: Sailing the Drake's Passage

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Luxury Lodging: Sea Spirit or Ocean Diamond

Visiting: South Atlantic

Continue sailing, enjoying wonderful meals, lectures and fabulous bird sightings along the way. Keep an eye out for whales as the ship gets closer and closer to the South Shetlands.

Day 5: Cruise the South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Luxury Lodging: Sea Spirit or Ocean Diamond

Visiting: Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula

When the Antarctic Convergence is left in our wake, you will truly begin your Antarctic adventure. It is perhaps the first sight of land itself that is embraced as the true beginning of any Antarctic expedition. You can begin to appreciate why this region has long captivated the attention of explorers and travelers alike. Every time we visit Antarctica we see something new or unexpected, meaning your trip will be unlike any other - creating a singular, personal experience.

We will take Zodiac excursions from the ship to explore bays, channels and landing sites each day. With wildlife always as our priority you will visit penguin rookeries, scout for humpback and Minke whales and search for a number of the southern seal species, including the menacing leopard seal.

The majesty of the Peninsula’s mountains will enchant you as you scramble up snowy pathways to vantage points offering you 360 degree views of your surroundings. One of these in particular, in Orne Harbor, provides us the opportunity to visit a chinstrap penguin colony high up on a ridge. Here you’ll have the choice between going for a mountain hike or spending time sitting quietly on a pebbled beach to enjoy the antics of curious penguins. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, join others for an invigorating polar swim.

Meditating in the peaceful silence of Antarctica, noisy interruptions become indelible memories such as penguins squabbling over prized pebbles or the boom and crack of a calving glacier in Neko Harbor. You can make a bit of noise yourself too by listening to the echo of voices bounce off a giant glacier.

Every day will be different, having been carefully crafted by your expedition team so as to entertain and educate you on this wonderful part of the world.

Day 6: Cruise the South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Luxury Lodging: Sea Spirit or Ocean Diamond

Visiting: Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula

Sail and see more of this amazing region.

Day 7: Cruise the South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation:  Luxury Lodging: Sea Spirit or Ocean Diamond

Visiting: Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula

Continue touring the region. The goal is often 2 land visits a day, along with potential zodiac touring along the shore. On some expeditions, due to inclement weather, we may make just 1 land visit, however the trip leader can often adjust programs to include 3 another day to make up for any missed opportunities. It's not unheard of to make a landing at midnight or 1 am, as the light is perfect at that time for photography and enjoying the peace of the continent.

Day 8: Cruise the South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation:  Luxury Lodging: Sea Spirit or Ocean Diamond

Visiting: Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula

Enjoy more excursions and profound sight-seeing of the mountains as they rise precipitously out of the sea.

Day 9: Begin sailing back to Ushuaia

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Visiting: South Atlantic

The journey back across the Drake Passage provides you with some final opportunities to enjoy the crisp Antarctic air. Spend time on the deck watching for seabirds and scouting for whales, enjoy a few final presentations by your Expedition Team or simply relax and reminisce about your experiences.

Accommodation: Luxury Lodging: Sea Spirit or Ocean Diamond

Day 10: Continue the voyage back to Ushuaia

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Visiting: South Atlantic

Enjoy a final day with the staff and fellow travelers as you sail the Drake back to Ushuaia.

Accommodation: Luxury Lodging: Sea Spirit or Ocean Diamond

Day 11: Return to Ushuaia and disembark

Meals: Breakfast

Visiting: Ushuaia

The ship arrives in Ushuaia in the morning allowing you to catch a flight from about 12 noon and after.
