Short Description

Hike through swathes of monsoon rainforest and woodland in Litchfield, cooling off with dips in rock holes and waterfalls; search for crocs by boat in the Mary River Wetlands; learn about the ways of Kakadu's original inhabitants during a cultural interpretive walk; visit the historic gold-mining town of Pine Creek and drift through the Katherine River by boat or canoe.

Small groups are usually defined as between 10 and 24 travelers, often less. If you're the kind of person who enjoys more intimate experiences and personal service this is a good choice. All else being equal you will pay a premium for this style vs a larger group tour.

Itinerary

Day 1: Darwin to Mary River, via Litchfield National Park
Flush with waterfalls, swimming holes and some pretty gigantic termite mounds, Litchfield National Park encapsulates all that’s wonderful about the Top End. We’ll start off here checking out Florence Falls and the Buley Rockholes, then break for a picnic before traveling on to Wangi Falls for a final swim and leisurely stroll through monsoon forest. Leaving Litchfield, it’s on and into Mary River National Park. The species of saltwater crocodile found in Australia are the biggest in the world, and the Mary River wetlands are absolutely full of them. See how many you can spot on an afternoon river cruise. All tents are twin-share and come with a proper bed.

Note: Total driving time today is around five-and-a-half hours. There are also a few short, easy walks.

Accommodation
Permanent, furnished tented camp (with shared facilities) (1 night)

Included Activities
Litchfield National Park
Mary River cruise

Meals Included

Dinner

Day 2: Kakadu National Park: Ubirr & Barramundi Gorge
In giving Kakadu National Park World Heritage-listing, UNESCO described it as a ‘living cultural landscape with exceptional natural and cultural values’. Indigenous people have lived here for more than 50,000 years, to which the ancient rock paintings of Ubirr can attest. Your guide will explain the significance of these artworks during an interpretative cultural walk that finishes on a rocky escarpment overlooking the Nardab floodplain. In the afternoon we head to either Maguk (Barramundi Gorge) or Gunlom Falls (seasonal choice). Swimming spots don’t get a whole lot more inviting than either of these spectacular sites.

Note: Total driving time today is around five hours. Total walking time is up to three and-a-half hours, depending on the trails taken.

Day 3: Kakadu to Katherine
Given that Kakadu covers approximately the same amount of land as Slovenia, the sky’s a pretty good place to see it all from. This morning you’ll have the option of taking a scenic flight over the billabongs, bushlands and floodplains that make up this ruggedly beautiful region. After a stop in at the Bowali visitors centre we head for the historic gold-mining town of Pine Creek which offers a very different side to Australian history. Back on the road again, there’s time for a dip in Edith Falls before pulling into our private campsite near Nitmuluk National Park.

Note: Total driving time today is around five-and-a-half hours. Total walking time is up to an hour-and-a-half.

Accommodation
Permanent, furnished tented camp (with shared facilities) (1 night)

Optional Activities
Flight (Fixed Wing Aircraft) over - Kakadu - from - AUD150

Pine Creek Gold-Mining Centre

Day 4: Katherine Gorge to Darwin
Back in the day (ok, it was 23 million years ago), the Katherine River flowed all the way from Arnhem Land to the Timor Sea. These days, the waters have subsided significantly: the Katherine River now flows along hemmed in on both sides by cliffs 70 meters high. It’s the highlight attraction of Nitmiluk National Park though, and you’ll have the opportunity to cruise through it by canoe or boat. Following lunch, we visit a private property next to an indigenous art gallery for some coaching in the ancient arts of boomerang throwing, fire making and traditional painting. Then it’s back to Darwin where the adventure winds up.

Note: Total driving time today is around four-and-a-half hours. Total walking time is up to three-and-a-half hours, depending on the group's choice of optional activities.

Katherine Gorge Scenic Cruise - AUD87

I finished my 22 day tour from Darwin to Perth on the 1st September and I am still re-living every element of this extraordinary experience each day. I want to do it all over again straight away. Dan, our driver, guide and chef was an absolute gem. His energy and enthusiasm was infectious and he gave everyone the confidence to take on the challenging hikes we did throughout the breathtaking gorges and canyons of the Kimberley and Karijini. His support on these hikes was heart warming as it made it possible to do everything on offer.Swimming in the waterholes and showering in waterfalls was an absolute highlight. Dan ensured we made the most of every day doing more than was on the itinerary. Our meals were terrific - healthy, tasty and enjoyed by everyone in our group. I was amazed at the effort Dan made to provide for all of the special dietary needs of passengers. He treated everyone with kindness and patience at all times. This was only my second group tour ever and the first in Australia. I would highly recommend this tour as it is so much easier to sit back and enjoy the journey as well as the spectacular destinations. Not driving, meant I went to places I wouldn't have gone if I was in my own vehicle. The wonderful commentary and story telling adds to the experience. As an older passenger I wasn't interested in being on a tour with only retirees and older people. The mixed age group was an important element of its great success for me. I noticed that other tours, that are much more expensive, went to the same car parks and camping grounds but the passengers were not going as far into the gorges as we did. Often they were just going to lookouts and viewing from above. They may not have slept in swag's some nights but that was their loss too. Nothing like staring into the brilliant night sky. This tour was great value for money. If you're thinking about it just do it - I am sure you will love it.

Just got back from a tour in the Top End with the legendary Scotty ! Besides being highly knowledgable and passionate about the places we visited, this guy went above and beyond to accomodate everyone's needs. Including mine as a Kosher observant.

I'm really speechless. It was an amazing tour, seeing all the good spots the top end has to offer ! Thank you, thank you, will definitely recommend to a friend.

Just got back off the 3 day Rock to Rock tour and the worst bit about this tour is that it ended. I had the best timem my tour leader, B, was fantastic! She was so enthusiastic and happy about everything. Always smiling even at 4.45am. She got us pumped up about every activity and was a wealth of knowledge!
I took this trip as it was my nans dream and sadly she passed. I brought a photo of nan with me to get a photo of her and me at Uluru. I explained this to B and not only did she take a photo but she went above and beyond to make it special with different photo ideas, toasting nan and even pouring her her own drink! She spoke to and about nan as if she were. This trip was truly magical. Everything i could have hoped for and more. Betina is a true asset to your company and i have no doubt that this trip would not have been as good if it wasnt for her!

4 day Yulara to West Macdonell Ranges. AMAZING! From start to end this trip was perfect. Our guide Sean was absolutely superb. He's a great driver, knowledgable, and humorous. Our host Nathan had camp and food sorted effortlessly. Our tour group was great fun and a pleasure to experience the delights that this country has to offer: Yulara, Kata Tjuta, Uluru and The West Macdonell Ranges (and much more in between). Would highly recommend this.
