Itinerary

Day 1: Antananarivo/Andasibe

Accommodation: Grace Lodge or similar, upgraded: Andasibe Hotel or similar

Upon arrival in Antananarivo (aka Tana), the capital of Madagascar, you will be met, and after a short briefing, drive to Andasibe. Along the way, view the Merina villages in the rocky mountains. In the evening, enjoy a night walk in the area of Andasibe to observe night active lemurs and other nocturnal animals.

Day 2: Natural Reserve Of Andasibe

Meals: Breakfast

Accommodation: Grace Lodge or similar, upgraded: Andasibe Hotel or similar

A morning visit to the Special Reserve of Andasibe to see the Indri Indri, the largest lemurs on the island. This reserve is unique with a wide variety of orchids, canopy, chameleons, tenrecs, and many birds. Afterwards, walk through the orchid park. In the afternoon visit Andasibe, a typical Betsimisaraka (The-Many-inseparable) village, and the second largest tribe on the island.

Day 3: Antsirabe

Meals: Breakfast

Accommodation: Chambres du Voyageur, upgraded: Vatolahy or Royal Palace Hotel.

Drive back to Tana, then head south to Antsirabe. The spectacular eroded hills are called ‘lavaka’ and are dotted with rice fields, vegetables and fruit trees. Next, a short visit to Ambatolampy, a large agricultural city. In the late afternoon arrive in Antsirabe, ‘the place of salt’, an elegant city well known as the center of the beer industry. Founded by the Norwegians in 1856, it feels and looks like a European city.

Days 4 & 5: Ranomafana National Park

Accommodation: Centrest or similar, upgraded: Setam Lodge

After breakfast, drive to Ambositra, the center of Madagascar’s wood carving industry. Continue to Ranomafana National Park, one of Madagascar’s highlights with its rain-forested hills and abundant wildlife. In addition to its densely forested hills, Ranomafana’s terrain is characterized by numerous small streams, which plummet down to the beautiful Namorona River. The next day, enjoy several hours walking in the park where you may spot lemurs, chameleons and other animals.

Days 6 & 7: Isalo

Meals: Breakfast

Accommodation: Isalo Ranch or similar, upgraded: Jardin du Roy or similar

After breakfast, leave Ranomafana and drive 220 miles to Isalo. On the way, you pass Fianarantsoa, ‘the city where one learns good things’, and the capital of the Betsileo tribes. Stop for a wine tasting in Ambalavao, the center of the wine industry. Afterwards, you visit the ‘Anteimoro Paper Factory’, drive through Ihosy (the capital of the Bara tribes), and the mountain chain of Andringitra, marking the end of the highland and the beginning of the south. The next morning explore the Isalo National Park. You’ll walk 1 ½ to reach the natural swimming pool where you may spot sifakas, brown lemurs and ringtaild lemurs, as well as fifty-five species of birds, lizards and snakes.

Days 8 & 9: Ifaty

Meals: Breakfast

Accommodation: Hotel de la Plage or similar, upgraded: Le Paradisier or similar

Continue to Tuléar, among the dry forests of the west, and the spiny desert of the south. On the way, admire the different ‘Mahafaly and Antandroy tombs’. Continue to Ifaty, (due to the bad roads, it will take about 2½ hours to get there). Situated in the deep south, the landscape is dominated by the spiny forest like the cactus, different euphorbiacea and didieracea. Here, mangrove trees line the coast, alternated by Vezo fishing villages. The next day is at your leisure. Since Ifaty is on the beach, it is an ideal place for diving and snorkeling, and popular for birdwatchers. You can also experience the Vezo Fishermen’s life. Many excursions are possible at an additional cost.

Day 10 – Tulear/Tana

Meals: Breakfast

Accommodation: Residence Lapasoa or similar, upgraded: Hotel Carlton or similar

After an early breakfast, fly back to Tana (priced separately) and transfer to your hotel for your afternoon at leisure. Tana is the city where the first king started to unify the different kingdoms of the island. Spend your evening walking to explore the low, mid and high cities.

Day 11 – Depart

After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport for your onward flight

Words fall short in describing all that the team at AAC did to ensure that our honeymoon to Africa was the trip of a lifetime! We say a lifetime, but now that we’ve experienced one AAC trip to Africa, we are already scheming about when we can return! Needless to say, we are still pinching ourselves thinking about some of our incredible experiences from gorilla trekking to seeing the big 5, and lest we forget the jaw-droopingly beautiful Victoria Falls. Everything far exceeded our expectations, and went off without a hitch, which was pretty unbelievable considering we had over 13 flights! The hospitality, the accommodations and the wildlife are unparalleled!

We worked with Anisha at AAC planning our dream trip to Africa. We shared what we wanted to do with Anisha and she planned the trip of a lifetime for us to visit the Mountain Gorillas in Uganda, a one-week safari in Tanzania, a climb to Mount Kilimanjaro and some beach time and diving in Zanzibar!

We have just returned from our second safari with Africa Adventure Consultants and this week will be planning the next. Our first, Kenya-Tanzania, was easily one of the greatest trips ever for us -- but the second, to Zimbabwe, was its equal. AAC absolutely nailed every detail, created a trip perfectly tailored to our interests (scenic, wildlife and cultural) and firmly locked in our trust as an organization we would not hesitate to recommend to anyone considering a trip to Africa. We love too that the company is committed to philanthropy, partners with organizations making a difference in the lives of both the people and wildlife of Africa, and that our trips play a role in supporting these efforts. We experienced this first-hand in Zimbabwe, which made the safari not just a great wildlife viewing experience, but a deeply rewarding journey for all of us.

I highly, highly recommend Africa Adventure Consultants for your safari or African adventure planning needs. They met with us and put together a customized itinerary for a safari in Tanzania and Kenya based on our specific wants, needs, and price range. Our entire trip was completely planned out with the best guides and accommodations. There was not a single hiccup while we were in Africa and it was probably the most well-planned trip I have ever been on. Great experience and will definitely be back when we plan our next African adventure.
