As a senior solo traveler, safety and price are very important to me. I am so tired of paying the single supplement, charged by most travel vendors. With AMA Waterways, an E category cabin can often be booked without the single supplement charge.

Once onboard, AMA Waterways invites the solo travelers to dine at the Captain's Table. This is done on the first night so that you can meet other solo travelers. While I didn't do a lot with the other solo travelers, it was nice to know that I could find someone with whom I could share a meal, if I found myself alone.

AMA Waterways also has different categories of walkers for excursions. They have a fast-paced group, a moderate-paced group and a group for gentle walkers. They have thought of everything!

I'm very glad to see that Ama is expanding to Asia and Africa because I've cruised with them in Europe and I think they have the best food of any of the European river cruise lines, not to mention big cabins. I also like their little touches like the travel guides they hand out so you can explore the ports on your own if you like, or just learn more about what you're going to see along the way. Now I can't decide whether to try out their Asia or Africa cruises, but it's something i don't mind thinking about.

I booked a cruise with AMAwaterways - first mistake - through their designated travel agent Avoya Travel - second mistake. I paid $800 deposit. Six months later I was asked to pay the balance. Avoya Travel asked if they could use my credit card. My wife was in hospital and I delayed answering until we discovered what was wrong and when I got the diagnosis and we couldn't travel. I told Avoya Travel and asked them not to charge my credit card. Avoya Travel still charged my credit card account without my permission!!! When I phoned up I discovered the agent was on holidays and I couldn't speak to her. Through major detective work I managed to reach and talk to her and she told me it would be dealt with. It was not and still has not been to this day, six months later.
I asked my credit card company to dispute the amount paid and they are in the process of doing that now but the company is fighting this all the way. Be aware that I cannot get through to anybody in the company and the travel agent isn't responding. This is incredibly frustrating. Be very very careful when using this company, they do not allow direct access on complaints. This is no way to gain customers. I would like to talk to somebody in the company about this but I cannot.

I definitely valued this trip. It was relaxing, it was fun, and it was greater than my expectations. This trip didn't put a hole in my wallet but it wasn't just a small dent either. It was definitely worth every penny. This had to be the best part. The STAY was too good to be a cruise. It was quiet and I didn't really worry about a shipwreck or anything drastic. Well, there were many things I had planned to do while on the cruise and I did everything and more. There were so many options and I did them and I really enjoyed myself while doing them. The heating and those other things relating to that were great and didn't cause any problems whatsoever to me at all.

Cost too much to go around puking my guts up all over the deck so there really was no value I could have got drunk at home and did the same thing. September 2016

Cost too much to go around puking my guts up all over the deck so there really was no value I could have got drunk at home and did the same thing. They made me make my own bed. That's **. The maid was hitting on me and I told her I would punch her in the kisser if she did it again. Not much to do on a river. I mean seriously they only had 1 show that they did over and over and over and over and over again every day. Besides the bar which was too expensive at least they had one that I could drink away the memories of the horrible thing. And yes I'm talking about my girlfriend.

Board your overnight flight to Moscow, Russia.

Arrive in Moscow and board the AmaKatarina. Relax in your stateroom or explore the city on your own before meeting your fellow travelers at the Welcome Dinner. (D)

Today, enjoy a city tour that includes the Red Square and many other well-known sights. You will have some free time to shop for souvenirs or wander on your own, perhaps to visit St. Basil’s Cathedral or GUM, the vast Soviet-Era department store. Enjoy lunch on a day boat as you cruise the Moscow River past the imposing façade of the Kremlin. Late this afternoon, you will visit Poklonnaya (Bow) Hill and its monument to WWII, and tour the city’s amazing Metro, quite possibly the world’s most extravagant subway system – many of the stations are adorned with chandeliers, sculptures and elaborate frescoes. The ship moors overnight in Moscow. (B,L,D)

This morning, venture beyond the walls of the Kremlin for a fascinating guided tour of the former residence of the Czars and center of the Russian Orthodox faith. Your tour includes a visit to the Kremlin Armory, one of Moscow’s oldest museums, with a vast collection of weaponry, jewelry, and historical artifacts. The ship departs this evening for Uglich. (B,L,D)

Located on the banks of the Volga, Uglich was founded by merchants in 1148 and is now home to some of Russia’s most beautiful churches and cathedrals. After arriving this evening, you will have a guided tour of the city and visit the Chambers of Prince Dimitry and the magnificent Church of Dimitry on the Blood, dedicated to the tragic death of Ivan the Terrible’s young son. The ship departs later tonight for Yaroslavl. (B,L,D)

Founded in 1010 by Prince Yaroslav the Wise, Yaroslavl is one of Russia’s oldest cities, tracing its roots back to the days of the Vikings. Your guided tour this morning explores the city’s history through its architecture, with stops at the fortified 12th-century Transfiguration Monastery and the Yaroslavl Museum of Russian Art, located in the former residence of the Governor of Yaroslavl. The ship departs early this afternoon and cruises overnight. (B,L,D)

Goritsy is a peaceful farming town and a typical Russian village. After arriving early this afternoon, you will have a guided tour that includes the Monastery of St. Cyril on the White Lake and the Museum of Icons. Return to the ship and continue on in the late afternoon to the island of Kizhi. (B,L,D)

Day 8: KIZHI

This afternoon you will arrive at Kizhi, situated at the north end of Lake Onega and the site of some of the most amazing wooden architecture in Russia. The entire island is a national open-air museum with more than 80 historic wooden structures, such as the Church of Intercession. Built by locals 250 years ago, the church’s towering walls and 22 domes were all constructed without a single nail. The ship departs later tonight. (B,L,D)

At noon today the ship arrives in Svirstroy, a town 100 miles from St. Petersburg with a population of only a thousand people. You will have a chance to sample grilled shashlyk, Russia’s very popular and delicious version of shish kebab, and later you will also enjoy a unique opportunity to visit the home of a friendly Russian family, where you will savor tea and pastries and genuine Russian hospitality. We depart mid-afternoon and cruise overnight to St. Petersburg. (B,L,D)

One of Russia’s former capitals, dating from the early 18th-century, St. Petersburg was built to Peter the Great’s exact specifications. After breakfast, you will disembark the ship and travel by hydrofoil to the Hermitage, one of the oldest, largest, and most awe-inspiring museums in the world. Founded by Catherine the Great, the museum is a complex of six buildings, including the former Winter Palace, and houses nearly three million works of art. After your visit, relax a bit with an enjoyable lunch in a local restaurant. This afternoon, your sightseeing tour of this splendid city will include the Peter & Paul Fortress, Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, and St. Isaacs Cathedral. The ship moors overnight in St. Petersburg. (B,L,D)

You will visit the nearby town of Pushkin today, where Catherine’s Palace was once the summer residence of the Russian Czars. This excursion includes a tour of the Cameron Gallery, which features formal state rooms and dining rooms embellished with baroque and neoclassical furnishings and décor. You will also visit the reconstructed Amber Room, considered by many to be the Eighth Wonder of the World, with its dazzling amber-covered walls. The remainder of the day is at your leisure. This evening, experience a traditional Russian ballet performance at the Hermitage Theater, or opt for a colorful and lively “Russian Folklore Show.” The ship moors in St. Petersburg overnight. (B,L,D)

This morning, depart by hydrofoil for Peterhof, St. Petersburg’s most spectacular Imperial Estate. Also known as the “Russian Versailles,” the palace was built on the shore of the Gulf of Finland by Peter the Great, initially as a resting place en route to the Imperial Naval base. Your tour includes the Lower Gardens, the Grand Cascade and Samson Fountain, which commemorates Russia’s victory over Sweden during the Great Northern War. The ship moors in St. Petersburg overnight. (B,L,D)

Your Russian cruise comes to an end as you prepare for your homeward flight. (B)
