Short Description

Explore the land of the Ancient Puebloans and the incredibly diverse landscapes that inspired Georgia O'Keefe’s legendary works in the enchanted state of New Mexico. Ride along desert ridges overlooking massive valleys, expansive deserts, and through many of the states 19 historic pueblos. Make an included trip to the incredible Taos Pueblo, a UNESCO world heritage site regarded as the oldest continuously inhabited community in the US. Keep your balance while crossing 800ft above the powerful Rio Grande River on the Gorge Bridge.

Recharge in the mineral rich natural hot springs of Ojo Caliente. If the springs aren’t enough, feed off the fallout in Los Alamos, the birthplace of the atomic bomb. The Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway will put your lungs to the test as you cycle the state’s highest peak, Wheeler Mountain, while looping through valleys, mesas, and national forests. New Mexico is a state full of wonders and surprises. Push your limits as an athlete and as an explorer as you discover the true enchantment of this region.

Small groups are usually defined as between 10 and 24 travelers, often less. If you're the kind of person who enjoys more intimate experiences and personal service this is a good choice. All else being equal you will pay a premium for this style vs a larger group tour.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Santa Fe to Chimayo

Accommodation: Casa Escondida

Starting/Meeting point: 10am at Hotel Chimayo de Santa Fe

Route: via Nambe and Cundiyo

Distance: 35 miles

Elevation Gain: 2319 ft

Meet your fellow riders and the cycling specialist this morning in the charming city of Santa Fe for a custom bike fitting and briefing on the adventure to come.

We start our journey today climbing 2.5 miles north out of Santa Fe before enjoying a long 13 mile glide down to the valley below. You’ll wind through rolling hills and wind carved hoodoos before dipping down to the farming valley of Chimayo. Our destination for the night, Chimayo is renowned for its chili and its incredible examples of traditional art and weaving. Be sure to visit some of the local plazas before re–joining your group for an included dinner. Don’t be afraid of the spice!

Day 2: Chimayo to Taos

Accommodation: Sagebrush Inn & Suites

Main Route: via the High Road to Taos Scenic Byway

Distance: 50 miles

Elevation Gain: 4870 ft

Bonus Miles: to Taos Pueblo

Distance: 12 miles

Whether it’s the altitude or the beauty, today’s ride along the Taos Scenic Byway will leave you breathless. Before climbing into the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, you’ll pass through a number of small, historic farming settlements, often populated by families that have lived there for generations. The renowned San Francisco de Asis Mission Church will greet you upon your entry to Taos; you may recognize it from the famous depictions of this area by Paul Strand, Ansel Adams, and Georgia O’Keefe.

If you’re ready to hit the sites and are too tired to cycle, enjoy a shuttle ride out to the Taos Pueblo. If you’re feeling strong, enjoy the bonus miles and extend your ride out to the Pueblo and back. Taos Pueblo is home to nearly 4500 people and has been continuously inhabited for over 1000 years making it the oldest of New Mexico’s nineteen Pueblos. It has maintained an incredible sense of tradition and history which is visible in its architecture, cuisine, and arts.

Day 3: Taos/Enchanted Circle Route

Accommodation: Sagebrush Inn & Suites

Main Route Option 1: Enchanted Circle Taos to Eagles Nest

Distance: 32 miles

Elevation gain: 2488ft

Main Route Option 2: Enchanted Circle Eagles Nest to Arroyo Seco

Distance: 50 miles

Elevation Gain: 3450ft

Burner Route: Enchanted Circle Taos to Arroyo Seco

Distance: 80 miles

Elevation Gain: 5849ft

The Enchanted Circle is perhaps one of the best exposures to New Mexico’s unique northern landscape. Classified as an official United States Scenic Byway, you will be treated to sweeping vistas of valleys, mountains and deserts as you circle Wheeler Peak. Whether you end up in the perch of the Eagles Nest or to complete the full circle, you will have three options of varying difficulty as you push yourself through these high altitude rides.

The first route will take you up the southern climb over the Taos nest with nearly 3500 ft in elevation gain over 35 miles, finishing in the Eagles Nest where you’ll enjoy an included lunch. If you’re feeling squirrely, continue north through the Carson National Forest to enjoy the shade of plentiful spruce and aspen trees that line the Red River for another 45 miles. However, if you’re satisfied with the ride thus far, or are just feeling flat out exhausted, you will have the opportunity to shuttle back to Taos. If you’re keen for a couple extra hours of sleep in the morning, feel free to take it slow, relax and ride out to the lunch stop in the shuttle to start your ride from there.

Upon completing your ride, enjoy a free night in Taos to explore the Pueblo, its plazas, and its people.

Day 4: Taos to Ojo Caliente

Accommodation: Ojai Caliente Resort & Spa

Main Route: Via Rio Grande Bridge and Rio Grande Canyon

Distance: 45 miles

Elevation Gain: 2015 ft

Burner Route: via the “Taos Grinder” and “Three Bridges”

Distance: 65 miles

Elevation Gain: 3220ft

Ride west out of Taos and enjoy the sweet ride of Blueberry Hill to the Gorge Bridge. Hanging 800 ft above the powerful Rio Grande River, the views will be worth the challenge. Once over, enjoy your glide down into the valley and dip your feet into the powerful Rio Grande. For your night stop, relax in the famous natural hot springs of Ojo Caliente, one of the oldest natural health resorts in the U.S. While the resort and spa opened its doors in 1868, its mineral spring water has been deemed sacred by the eight local Northern Pueblo communities for nearly 3000 years.

Day 5: Ojo Caliente to Los Alamos

Accommodation: Holiday Inn Express & Suites

Main Route: via the Rio Grande River Valley

Distance: 42 miles

Elevation Gain: 2400 ft

Burner Route: via the Carson National Forest and the Rio Grande River Valley

Distance: 66 miles

Elevation Gain: 3904 ft

Enjoy one last healing soak this morning before setting off south towards Los Alamos, the site of the first nuclear test. Our first route allows you a long slow decline before climbing nearly 2000 feet over the last 10 miles. Our 2nd option will present you with a bit more of a challenge as you climb the mountains into Los Alamos. Celebrate your success and charge up with the nuclear power of Los Alamos as you prepare for your final day with an included dinner.

Day 6: Los Alamos to Santa Fe

Route: via Bandelier National Monument

Distance: 50 miles

Elevation Gain: 3520 ft

Weave your way out of Los Alamos and cross the Rio Grande one last time as you retrace a familiar route south and prepare for the end of your adventure. Don’t get too accustomed to the downhill though! You’ll have to earn your finish with a nearly 2000 ft climb back into Santa Fe. The oldest state capital in the United States, Santa Fe was formed sometime after the year 900.

Borrowing from the traditional Pueblo structures, Santa Fe has a very distinct style with adobe buildings and a trademark stucco color. Although Georgia O’Keefe has long passed, the city remains a major hub for artists and is bustling with incredible galleries ranging from the classics to innovative designs such as the Meow Wolf House. Celebrate the end of your adventure with a send–off at the 2nd Street Brewery and continue to challenge your taste buds with the regions unique green chilies.

Physical requirements

While you don’t need to be a high level athlete, our tours are geared towards those with active lifestyles, and some riding experience. Our routes average about 40-60 miles per day, often at high elevations, and featuring a number of climbs.   Many of our passengers look at these trips as great motivation to train for their vacation.

Cultural Notes:

The biggest culture shock may be that tipping in America is part of our culture. Bartender's, masseuse, local guides, etc often rely on tips as 50% or more of their salary
