This was our third Backroads trip. It was a 10 day bike trip on the south island of New Zealand. Amazing! Very well organized! Great guides! All the details are carefully taken care of! Even when the unexpected happened (an earthquake!), our guides had a bus replace the train trip that was cancelled (due to damage to the railroad tracks) and it was done quickly. I would recommend Backroads to all my active friends :)

I've taken two Backroads camping trips with my teenage son. It's our summer bonding time and has proved to be a better experience than I could have imagined. Highly recommended. Everything is done for you except riding the bikes! We've been to the San Juan Islands and Yellowstone/Tetons. This year, hopefully Alaska!

I recently had the most amazing experience on the Backroads Singles-Solos Wine Country to San Francisco Biking trip. I'm not a biker but everyone was supportive of each other regardless of experience level. The routes took us through some of the most beautiful roads in the Bay Area. My favorite part was the food as there were freshly-prepared meals three times a day. A+.

Itinerary

Days 1-3 Hike in Vatnajökull National Park

Shaped over millennia by volcanic eruptions, glacial runoff and rushing rivers  On foot and by Zodiac boat, explore a lagoon with an iceberg “sculpture garden” in its silty waters  Trek through forest and heath to Svartifoss, or “black falls,” a stunning cascade pouring from hexagonal lava columns  Strap on crampons and trek over Svinafellsjökull, admired for its ice formations, water caldrons and pinnacles  At Iceland's southernmost tip, walk in the protected habitat of puffins, Arctic terns and guillemots.

Day 4: Ready for a quintessentially Icelandic outing? Hop aboard a super jeep

For a drive across rocky lava beds, glacial outflows and rivers near Katla Volcano  Discover Thórsmörk, an alpine oasis of lime-hued hillsides, caves, icy peaks and wildflowers  Hike from bizarre rock formations and canyons to a glacier tongue surrounded by pristine valleys, lakes and ice fields  Explore a vibrant green wonderland, ringed with stunning caves, icy peaks and crossed by running glacial streams.

Days 5-6: Venture into the realm of bubbling mud pools and thermal rivers

Set out on two wheels through the rolling terrain around Lake Thingvellir, a beautiful and protected national shrine  Pedal through the Golden Circle and Thingvellir National Park, a World Heritage site and symbolic heart of the Icelandic nation Forty percent of all Icelandic flora can be found here, though nothing is taller than a dwarf birch!
