Highlights
  • Bike, hike and ride a horse through remote villages and rugged countryside full of haystacks, horse-drawn wagons and grazing dairy cattle.
  • Visit two UNESCO World Heritage Sites – the walled city of Sighişoara and the Transylvanian villages with fortified churches.
  • Meet and interact with locals who still make their living as beekeepers, blacksmiths, carpenters, shepherds and weavers.

Romania conjures up iconic images of Count Dracula, Transylvania, the Carpathian Mountains and old-world Eastern European culture. It's a country where Western and Byzantine influences meet, shepherds still tend their flocks, horse drawn carriages are more numerous than cars, and medieval villages retain their traditional character. On BikeHike's Transylvania Traverse, we explore the South East of Romania by mountain bike, horseback and foot. We'll show you ethnic diversity from Romanians, Hungarians and Saxons to Gypsies, Ukrainians and Poles, and we'll learn about their traditions and beliefs. We'll sample the region’s local cuisine and wines in the ambiance of a medieval castle, and hike and bike in the legendary Carpathian Mountains, the backbone of Eastern Europe. These Romania adventure tours are an artful blend of outdoor activity, traditional culture, exquisite scenery and ancient history.

Even if you don’t encounter Dracula, Transylvania’s most prominent resident, you’ll bike, walk and ride horses through this bastion of Old Europe, meeting the locals.

I did a cycling trip in Cuba with Bike Hike in November. The trip was flawlessly organized. We had lots of advance information so we were well prepared for what to expect. Our guide and full time babysitter Jackson was really great. He made sure things ran exactly on time all the time, and was flexible if we wanted to tweak the plans just a little - like cycle more than the itinerary called for, or make an unplanned stop for a swim. I thought the design of the tour was perfect. Just enough challenging and easy days, but most importantly, there was enough time to get a flavor of Cuba and its people. I will definitely do another trip with Bike Hike.

I went on my first trip with HikeBike last May to Macedonia, and it definitely will not be my last. I loved it, mostly because HikeTrip created experiences that I could not have achieved if I planned it on my own.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival Bucharest

Upon arrival into the Bucharest Airport, you’ll be met by your BikeHike Adventures guide and transferred to Sinaia, a beautiful mountainous resort town. Overnight in a cozy hotel.

Day 2: Bucharest - Transylvanian Castles - Carpathian Mountains - Magura (Hiking)

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

After a leisurely breakfast and morning, we’ll visit Peles Castle, a royal palace built as a summer residence for the first king of Romania, Carol I. The castle was built between 1875 and 1883 in a German Renaissance style. We’ll take a cable car high up into the mountains, and then set off on a hike for 3-4 hours in the surrounding mountains. We’ll eventually reach our vehicle and then drive north into the southern Carpathian Mountains, to the foothills of Piatra Craiului Mountain in Magura. We’ll check into our guesthouse here with panoramic views and have a traditional Romanian dinner cooked by our hosts.

Day 3: Magura (Biking)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today we switch gears and spend the day on mountain bikes, pedaling along quiet, hilly roads that wind along a gorgeous mountain ridge. The views over the edge are dramatic, with the rugged mountain chain of Piatra Craiului and grassy meadows. The terrain today is rugged and fun. We’ll ride through remote hilly villages, alpine pastures and across rural fields. There will be steep ascents, thrilling descents and a few shallow water crossings, too. Along the way we’ll visit an ancient monastic shrine built into a cave. The final descent to the Plaiul Foii valley is one of our favourite downhill sections in this region. We overnight in the same accommodation in Magura tonight. (Biking 48km/30m with altitude gains of 3100ft/ 950m).

Day 4: Magura - Bran Castle - Valea Zalanului (Hiking)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today we set off on foot, hiking to Bran Castle, otherwise known as Dracula’s Castle. It is a five hour hike with a serious climb and a steep descent. We’ll hike through a picturesque village and over a mountain until we reach Bran Castle, built in 13th century and one of the oldest medieval castles in Romania. Since the 1900’s, it’s been the summer residence of Queen Marie of Romania, the granddaughter of Queen Victoria of England. We’ll have a picnic lunch and then drive to Valea Zalanului. Prince Charles, owns a house in this beautifully preserved village and upon availability, we may be lucky enough to spend the next three nights in his house. After checking in to our accommodation for the night we’ll head to the village pub to watch the cow parade. At dusk, all the cattle and horses will be set free from the fields and will all return home waiting for their gates to open. It’s certainly a spectacle to see.

Day 5: Valea Zalanului (Hiking)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We’ll start the day with a very typical and organic breakfast of homemade cheeses, sausages, bread and eggs right from the chickens. Our special accommodation, owned by The Prince of Wales, was originally been built for the former ‘judge’ who was overseeing the village. It is composed of several buildings, and has a patch of alpine forest and extensive flower meadows with mineral springs and small brooks. The property is characterized by a rich biodiversity of plants, insects, birds and large mammals, including bears that sometimes wander into the backyard. Wolves can be heard howling at times on winter nights. After breakfast we’ll start hiking from our accommodations on paths through the hills and into the forests where deer and fox can often be seen grazing in the fields. We’ll pass through extremely remote villages of Hungarian minorities where we’ll have the opportunity to see their traditional lives. We’ll stop for a picnic lunch in the wilderness and return to our accommodations about five hours later.

Day 6: Valea Zalanului (Hiking)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today we’re going back into time and we’ll travel by traditional horse-drawn cart to the start of our hike in the Ajta Valley. We’ll cross through a stream several times as we weave along country roads in Valea Zalanului. Bears in this area have been filmed in the movie Wild Carpathia. We’ll make a stop to see a charcoal burner, which is typical to Transylvania. Finally we’ll start our hike along a ridge that runs through mature beech and hornbeam forests and medieval woodland pastures with oak and wild pear trees. These are good habitats for large mammals, reptiles and amphibians. You may meet Romanian shepherds with their flocks of sheep. We’ll return to our cozy accommodation for the night and have a feast of a Romanian dinner this evening.

Day 7: Miclosoara - Sighisoara (Horseback Riding)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We have a change of pace this morning. We’ll head to Count Kalnoky’s village for a morning of horseback riding. We’ll saddle up, get some instructional riding tips and then set off for a few hours of riding. We’ll meander through the countryside, exploring the lush and flowery meadows while observing the daily authentic way of life of the locals. Afterwards we’ll drive to Sighisoara, considered to be one of the most intact and medieval architectural citadel’s in Romania. The medieval citadel is perched on a hilltop and is fortified with a 14th century wall and towers. Tonight we’ll overnight in a comfortable hotel right in the center of the fortress.

Day 8: Sighisoara (Biking)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

We’re back on bikes today, cycling through traditional Saxon villages in the peaceful countryside. We’ll pedal along hilly paved roads today, gaining about 1000 feet in altitude. The views today are very scenic with fortified churches in each of the towns we ride through, pastures of wild flowers and alpine forests. We’ll also see bee keepers in the fertile fields. If we’re lucky, they’ll invite us over to taste the honeycomb right from the hive. We’ll make stops in some of the local grocery stores to buy a few snacks along the way. Cycling through the Romanian countryside is the perfect mode of transport to really experience the authentic way of life here. Lunch is a picnic in the countryside. We’ll return to the same hotel in Sighisoara. Biking 15km/9mi.

Day 9: Sighisoara - Bucharest (City Tour)

Meals: Breakfast

We leave Transylvania this morning by train and head to Bucharest, Romania’s bustling metropolis capital city. Once we arrive into Bucharest, we’ll check into our cozy hotel in the centre of town and then have time to explore the city on foot. Bucharest is laden with history, and is known for its wide, tree-lined streets, neoclassical buildings and fashionable parks.

Day 10: Bucharest - Departure

Meals: Breakfast

Transfer to the airport for international flights home.
