Highlights
  • Discover Zermatt to the summit of the Gornergrat
  • Experience fascinating hikes to Swiss Alpine Club
  • Explore Andermatt the largest of the three villages in the valley
  • Explore Zurich is the ideal starting point for your journey
  • Gentle hills, peaceful woods, the unpolluted lakes and rivers all just a stone’s throw from the Alps

Zermatt, Andermatt and Vals: It would be hard to find three destinations in Switzerland that come together so perfectly to combine luxury, beauty and world class hiking. Zurich is the ideal starting point for your journey; gentle hills, peaceful woods, the unpolluted lakes and rivers all just a stone’s throw from the Alps. Starting below the iconic Matterhorn in Zermatt, away from the traffic there is a deep silence amid stunning mountain scenery and the best way to explore this wonderland is on foot. We then head to the Ursern valley “a hiker’s paradise”; at the foot of the Gotthard Pass, the Ursern valley is one of the most impressive upland valleys in Switzerland. Andermatt the largest of the three villages in the valley is at the crossroads of the mountain passes from north to south and from east to west. Your journey finishes in the mountain village of Vals where the village square is still surrounded by original Vals houses roofed with stone tiles made of Vals quartzite.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive into Zermatt where you’ll check into your home for the next three nights. Depending upon your arrival time, you may have time to stretch your legs with a short hike to a mountain restaurant for a glass of local Walliser wine and watch the sunset over the iconic Matterhorn.

Day 2: Start your day riding the historic Gornergrat cog railway direct from Zermatt to the summit of the Gornergrat. Make your way through the glacier garden of the tongue of the Gorner glacier and continue on for a “civilized lunch” at Chez Vrony, one of the many outposts of the Julen family dynasty.

Day 3: Embark on a hiking tour of Mattertal's traditional farming villages before walking along the alpine shelf towards the north face of the Matterhorn and towards the village of Zmutt. Your afternoon can be spent enjoying the spa at The Omnia and exploring the shops on the Bahnhofstrasse.

Day 4: Hop on the Glacier Express – the most famous railway in the world travelling through untouched mountain landscapes, deep gorges and valleys. Arrive in Realp and hike to the Swiss Alpine Club Albert Heim Hütte. Enjoy a picnic lunch followed by a hike across the long panoramic trail above the Urseren Valley.

Day 5: Board the train from Andermatt to the Oberalp Pass and into the Canton of Graubunden. Follow the breathtaking mountain trail from the pass to the Tomasee and continue traversing up the Val Maighels. Take an afternoon train to Ilanz and on to Vals where an afternoon soak in the Therme Vals is a must!

Day 6: Embark on the 3-Lakes hike, considered one of the most beautiful hikes in the area. Visit a typical Walser farmhouse and meet renaissance farmers who will give us a cheese-making demonstration and tasting of their artisan goats’ cheeses.

Day 7: After breakfast, drive back to Zurich, either into the city proper or directly to the airport. Bon voyage!
