Villa Maya, has two pools, a jacuzzi and nature walking trails.

Day 4: Tikal Ruins

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Today, an unforgettable visit to the ruins of Tikal. Settled in 700 B.C., Tikal was the grandest of all Mayan cities. Long protected by the jungle in the remote Peten Peninsula, Tikal is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, see towering pyramids rise above the rainforest canopy while the sounds of tropical birds fill the air. Look for spider and howler monkeys. Visit Tikal’s great plaza. Day 5: Tikal Area, Antigua

We just spent 10 days exploring Guatemala with Caravan tours. The hotels were amazing, the food was delicious, our driver was fantastic and our guide was so knowledgeable and kind. We had two families and 6 kids from the ages of 18-10 and we all learned so much. The guide was wonderful and really had great knowledge of the country. I came back with such a great appreciation for the Mayan culture and people. Thank you, Caravan for a wonderful adventure.

I went with Caravan to Guatemala from late December into January. Can't say enough good things about it. The company covers all contingencies, the tour guide was excellent (A+), the hotels were very nice, ditto for the food. My only complaint was a couple of days of very long bus rides but there were frequent stops so even that was tolerable. I'm planning to go on their Colonial Mexico tour next February. If you take the Guatemala tour (which I fully recommend), try to get Jorge Fuentes as your guide....he's terrific!

We spent Jan. 30 -Feb. 12 in Guatemala touring the country. The first 10 days were on a Caravan Tour-2nights in Guatemala City, 2 nights at Lake Atitlan, 2 nights near Copan, Honduras,2 nights near Tikal, and 2 nights in Antigua. We then extended our trip by staying 3 more nights in Antigua on our own.

The Caravan Tour (you can see the details on Stride) was excellent-a great guide, good hotels, decent, food, (unexciting and somewhat bland, but varied and good quality) and great, well travelled tour participants.

Overall, the country is beautiful and we had a wonderful time on our trip. If you are thinking of going, I would encourage you to go.

This was our third trip with Caravan Tours (we went with the prior tours to Yellowstone and Costa Rica). This trip to Guatemala was much more relaxed than Costa Rica - much of the trip was about the Churches (a bit too much for me) and Mayan Ruins (Tikal was AWESOME). The market in Chichicastenango was fun and interesting. Caravan REALLY had the tour guide explain the do's/don'ts regarding food - they really discouraged us from trying street food and such (in an attempt to make sure all were well on the trip). Very good trip. Travelers are friendly 50 and over folks. Good amount of travel on coach.

It was a terrific experience. I would do it again in a heart beat. Our tour guide, Rolando Meneses, was the best. We couldn't have asked for a better tour guide. I went with my wife, her brother and my mother-in-law. Ages, 60 to 85. We had no problem getting around. Our ages and various problems like arthritis were not a problem. Every place we stayed was very good. Some were exceptionally good.

All meals and tips were paid for by the tour company. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. All included. I've been on other tours with a different company but Caravan was definitely better in every way.

I wanted to give some feedback on our Caravan tour to Costa Rica. We went this route for the following reasons:

1. Price – most other companies quoted a much higher price for a similar itinerary and accommodations. Caravan was priced extremely reasonably.

2. Ease – no worries about how to get from A to B. I wouldn’t want to drive on some of those mountain roads and I felt safer in a larger vehicle. Bus was secure so we could bring whatever we needed for the day and just take with us what was necessary for each outing and leave everything else safely on the bus. Check-in, baggage, and entrance fees – everything was taken care of for us. We didn’t have to think twice about what we were eating or drinking – important when traveling with kids! The itinerary included rest stops at least every two hours so we knew would have food or a bathroom before it became an emergency.

3. Tour guides – our Caravan tour director was a nature specialist (which was especially wonderful) and we had excellent local guides in each location.

4. Company – I really enjoyed traveling with a group of people all of whom loved to travel. Hubby and I don’t see eye to eye on how to vacation so this took a lot of the stress away. My mother and brother also joined us so this way I didn’t have to worry that each person in our party wanted to do something else – it was already planned for us!

Drawbacks:

1. Loss of flexibility – can’t stop anywhere for a picture or can’t linger – always on a schedule.

2. Up early every morning to cover the distances and beat the crowds (though the latter was a plus in my book)

3. Exposed to a lesser variety of local food though Caravan doesn’t do a bad job on the whole.
