The guide in Yangshuo was rude and unpolite, and also push us to shop at the local store. Never use China Highlights again!

For the most part China has been great. Cities have been wonderful and the guides have been outstanding. Especially Cody (in Chengdu) and Louise (in Beijing) ... They both went above and beyond to share their city with us.

I've just returned from my trip to China, a week ago. I've seen many-many interesting places of Guangdong and Guangxi provinces. But most of all i liked my 2-days trip to Longshen villages with my guide Frank from chinahighlights.
The day before our trip has started, in Guilin, Frank met me in hotel and told about our journey. Next 2 days we visited traditional ancient chinese villages (the biggest from them are Ping'an and Dazhai), walking around them, saw the rice-terraces landscape (it was really unbelievable). Also we had a hiking between villages, and stayed at night at ZhongLiu village. I haven't seen any tourists in this village, even chinese tourists. It was fantastic cause we've seen real chinese life of local people, including, for example, planting vegetables, collecting tea). Very quiet, fresh air, natural food. Yes, in this village almost no shops, no souvenirs, but you dont need them. All around you a hundred times better.
I advice all, who wants to see real chinese life, visit this place, especially this village, stay at night there.
Thanks very much to my guide Frank and chinahighlights for this trip!

Let me start out by saying it has been over a year since our trip to China, but I still enjoy the memories. China Highlights was unknown to me when I started looking more than 2 years before our trip. I looked at many companies, but I gravitated toward China Highlights because they provided personalized tours that allowed us to go and do what we wanted, not tours that everyone went on, ie a 40 passenger tour bus. It also allowed us the flexibility that if we decided on the spot, that an attraction was not where we wanted to spend the allotted time, we could pick-up and move on to our next attraction. Without a doubt, China Highlights ended up being the right choice.

I traveled with my sister and her son, my nephew. It was initially also supposed to include my wife and our daughter and her friend. China highlights worked with me (I got elected to set the trip up) throughout the entire period to make sure we 'got it right'. Coco Yang was my initial contact at China Highlights and she proved to be excellent and patient during the whole process. Initially we were going to go for three weeks visiting 6 cities, Beijing, Xian, Chengdu, Lhasa, Shanghai and Hong Kong. Coco and I worked toward 3 weeks and 6 people and 6 cities. Coco provided the detailed itinerary that we settled on after many emails and some suggestions she made.

Now here's where her patience was needed. My sister after researching Lhasa, determined that the altitude might be a problem and didn't want to spend vacation time with altitude sickness so after discussion, we decided to drop the western swing through Chengdu and Lhasa. Not a problem, Coco redid the itinerary and provided it back for approval. It looked fine at the time.

Now as time passes problem #2. My daughter and friend got cold feet, thinking it would be too 'un-American like' and they would not be able to find anything she would eat. Down to 4 people. and because of my nephew's commitments that were unplanned for, we could only do 2 weeks and a day or so. Back to the drawing board, dropping Lhasa and Chengdu and adding Guangzhou to Beijing, Xian, Shanghai and Hong Kong and adding train transportation from Guangzhou to Hong Kong. Again, Coco provided an updated itinerary I think we are almost home with the itinerary and we again tell Coco that it looks good.

Now, we have to book our flights but I live in Ohio and the others live in Mississippi. Flights are not able to be coordinated. Back to Coco. Different arrival times. Not a problem, they will have someone to meet each group. One last bump. My wife decided that because my daughter wasn't going, she didn't want to go. Now we have an odd number. Back to Coco with changes to the hotel accommodations. I think we are all set now, a year later. 3 people, 5 cities. It's a go!

Now for the actual trip. We arrived as planned and we were picked up as planned. The tours were excellent, the guides were great and the food was better (identifiable and close to what you would find in Chinese restaurants in the U.S.) than expected. If you are concerned about food or ordering, don't be. Every restaurant we went into, including KFC has a picture book where you can look at pictures and read the description and then just point to what you want. It worked every time, even when we were out on our own for dinner and none of us spoke Chinese.

We were escorted in private vehicles, just the three of us, to each attraction. We were dropped off and when we were finished the car and driver were there to pick us up. Couldn't have been better. The guides took care of all tickets and escorted through each attraction providing very detailed information. They also escorted us to the airports or train terminal.

We chose to take the train from Guangzhou to Hong Kong just to say we did. We had finished our tour early and our guide Beatrice took us to the train station, being sure we had out tickets, knew where we were going and which train to catch. Now, here is service. She left after she made sure we were ok. We were sitting there for maybe 1/2 hour or a little more when we see her coming back. She said she was heading home when she thought we might like to catch an earlier train. Of course, we could not have done that on our own, nor did we even think of it. We were just enjoying the downtime. She took our tickets and booked us on an earlier train. Again, she made sure that we knew where we were going and that we had our tickets. Outstanding service and if you tour Guangzhou. Ask for Beatrice, I'm sure you will be satisfied.

Let me mention two of our other guides that were better than you would expect. I will say without a doubt, we had the BEST guide you could ask for in Beijing. Gerry is his name and if you are going to Beijing, ASK FOR HIM!! You won't be disappointed, but you may not get him either, depending on his schedule because I'm sure he is in high demand. The other guide that was very memorable was Summer, who guided us through Xian. Again, she went beyond what she had to when she noticed my sister (approaching 70) having a, let's say a not easy time getting in and out of the van. She took it upon herself to find a step that we then carried in the van to make entering and exiting the van a lot easier for her. I would be remiss not to mention that at one of the locals homes that we visited, it came to light that she sang Chinese opera. Of course when someone says that you have reservations, but she offered to sing, and sing she did. Wow! What a voice. She was outstanding, even at the kitchen table where we were sitting with the homeowners. An unexpected benefit that we never would have gotten on one of the standard tours offered by other vendors.
