Short Description

Our photo tour’s itinerary, designed by Ossian, spans five distinct biomes of Northwest Argentina: the sub-Andean humid sierras of the east, the fertile valleys, the canyons, the high mountains of the Andes, and the high plateau of Altiplano, or Puna. The highest vineyards in the world thrive here and yield grapes that will become elegant fruity white Torrontes and full-bodied red Malbec wines. Temperate valleys, where cattle and farming sustain life, have spawned a strong gaucho culture you will experience and photograph up close. We’ll tour the world’s highest vineyard, Colome vineyard, see by special invitation the James Turrell museum, tour the magical town of Cachi, and explore the Los Cardones National Park and the Quebrada de Humahuaca, a World Heritage Site. You’ll capture the essence of each and reveal their soulful beauty on this extraordinary high altitude wine and photography tour!

Groups are between 25-60 people, typically ~30-40. Usually there will be many opportunities to split off and enjoy meals and excursions in smaller groups. This is the most economical way to travel, saving up to 40% versus booking the same itinerary yourself.

Morning departure from Villa Vicuna (pre-night hotel) with Lauren Hefferon and Ossian Lindholm. We’ll stop for lunch at a goat farm, just after the small village of Talapampa. We arrive at our hotel by early evening relaxed, satiated and inspired. After a rest we’ll gather for cocktails and enjoy an intro talk by Ossian about the region and the important role that photography plays in protecting and conserving nature and culture. Dinner at the Patios de Cafayate’s lovely restaurant.

Day 2: Cafayate

We’ll begin the morning with a sunrise hike to La Punilla to capture the first light over the Calchaquí Valley. After breakfast, we’ll gather at our lovely hotel for our first power point lecture. We explore the Piatelli vineyards and enjoy a traditional lunch in their delightful restaurant. In late afternoon we enjoy the tiny village of Cafayate, its wine museum and lively plaza.

Day 3: Cafayate

The dunes at sunrise await our camera lenses and creative eye. After breakfast, we will have a power point lesson. We have a multi-course asado (Argentinian BBQ) in Estancia Chimpa followed by folkoric surprises. In the late afternoon, when the light is perfect, we’ll hike in La Yesera to photograph this magnificent ancient canyon. We have an early morning hike to practice composition, aperture settings and shutter speed in an Inca settlement at base of the Cachi Massif. Ossian will share his knowledge about the Inca’s sophisticated irrigation systems that are still evident in the terraced hillsides covered in cactus. We get our lenses close to the earth, photograph the native flora and fauna. The highlights of this village include the Cachi Church and the Cachi Archeological Museum. After dinner, we gather for a special session in night photography and to capture the moon rising over the Cachi mountains.

Day 6: Cachi to Purmamarca

First we explore the myriad of contrasting colors in the “Valle Encantado” (Enchanted Valley), with its astounding erosion-sculpted rock formations, and the National Park Los Cardones. From Valle Encantado we descend down the Cuesta del Obispo, a winding road of many micro-climates that connects high and dry climates with a mountain forest. We have a picnic along the river and then a drive to Purmamarca in the Jujuy region. Your day will be full of special photographic moments!
