Itinerary

Day 1: Frankfurt

What's up, river roaming crew? Who's pumped for 8 days of casually cruising down the Rhine? Meeting up onboard The A, we'll start as we mean to go on with a welcome shindig, drinks and dinner. Party vibes on high, we'll the head into the cosmopolitan lights of Frankfurt for a night on the town.

Day 2: Frankfurt

Got carried away last night? A big breakfast and a strong coffee should sort you right as, as you'll be needing all your energy for today. First up, we're going exploring around 'Mainhattan', Europe's largest financial centre and the reason this city is home to bankers galore. Within this part of town you'll find the Old Town - pretty, winding and impressively ancient. Explore around here on foot or bike, and be sure to stop off at the Kleine Markthall for some local wares. Foodies, you can explore the market with our on board chef, stocking up on local produce for tonight's cooking class. Keen to learn about the history of the city? The Rothchilds are a good place to start, as is the Jewish museum. Tonight, we'll get another taste if the city's eclectic nightlife scene.

Day 3: Frankfurt to Koblenz via Rüdesheim

Well good morning pretty Rüdesheim! Do we have any Game of Thrones fans onboard? Then you'll probably recognise the 12th century Eberbach Monastery, which was used as a filming location. Today, we're visiting with one thing on the mind - wine. We'll taste the abbey's famous Rieslings and cycle around the region...in that order.
Ready for something special? Tonight we will dine like Kings and Queens, quite literally, as we feast on a banquet in a bonafide medieval castle. Eeekk! Think rustic food, think local Rhine wines, think lute-strumming bards and think serving wenches. Definitely more Henry VII than Red Wedding, that's for sure... After dinner (if we can roll ourselves outside), our Local Guide will show us the sites of Koblenz, starting at German Corner, a local hangout where the Rhine and the Moselle river join.

Day 4: Koblenz to Cologne via Remagen and Bonn

Stopping first at Remagen this morning, and it's time to flex your cycling skills once again. We'll drop you off here and meet up with you again in Bonn, giving you plenty of time to take in the delights of the romantic Rhine valley.
Stopping here to pick up our weary cyclists, it's worth having a wander around Bonn, most notably the birth place of Beethoven, and you can actually visit the great composer's birth house here.
Pretty, medieval, fun loving Cologne. We love this city, its residents love this city, and we're betting you'll love it too. And to be honest, how can you not? Once docked, we'll take you to Cologne's Cathedral, which literally dominates the skyline of the city with its twin spires and is regularly voted Germany's most popular tourist attraction. Then, it's onto the Altstadt (old town), where the gothic architecture and homely beer halls will have you seriously impressed. Speaking of beer, this evening you'll be trying Kölsch, a Cologne speciality.

Day 5: Cologne to Duisburg

Hopefully there won't be too many sore Kölsch heads this morning, as we've got another prime cycling opportunity for you - again riding the long, flat and ridiculously beautiful path to Duisburg. Or, you could just chill on deck - totally your choice.
Old meets new in Duisburg, where we'll be docking for dinner. itching for a party this evening? We have good news - one of the town's most notable DJ's will be coming onboard to get the party started...

Day 6: Duisburg to Amsterdam

No trip to the "Venice of the North" would be complete without a cruise around the city's iconic waterways, so that's exactly what our agenda has in store for today. On route, take note of the way in which no building is actually straight (it's legitimately crazy), and keep your eyes peeled for the narrowest house in the world (just a door's width wide!). Cruise complete, take your pick of our Optionals for how to spend the rest of the day. Maybe the house of Anne Frank has been on your must do list since forever, or perhaps it's the tulip displays at Keukenhof Gardens that you've been dreaming of. For the foodies, we've got a cheese workshop or a mixology masterclass to keep you entertained. Tonight, let's see what the bright lights of Dam have in store for us...

Day 7: Amsterdam Incl Haarlem

We'll be casting off from Amsterdam early this morning, but chances are you'll still be snoozing peacefully. Them's the joys of a river cruise!
Waking up to the pretty Dutch countryside passing by your window and after filling up on breakfast treats, you'll step on land for the day in Haarlem, famed for its cobblestone streets, traditional gabled houses and leafy courtyards. So, what to do? Well, you could explore the museums, kick back with lattes and stroopwafel in one of the cosy cafes, or opt for a ME Time Optional. For the hops heads, we're heading to a brewery in a converted church, and for the adventure aficionados we've got something real special - blokarting on the beach. YouTube it, then do it.
Back in Dam for the night, and it's our last one as a river dwelling crew. So, let's see this trip out in style, with a farewell dinner, tasty Dutch street food, and one last night out on the town.

Day 8: Amsterdam

After one more blissful sleep, we're sad to say your boat time is over. River cruising, you're new favourite way of travelling! But, no need to fear as tonight you join up with your Contiki crew and explore Amsterdam. Opt in for an evening canal cruise to see famous gable houses.

Day 9: Amsterdam to Rhine Valley

Now it's time to pour some sunlight on the agenda & take in the beauty of canals, crooked buildings, obscure museums & a café culture like no other.
After the scenic journey of fairytale castles, vineyards and valleys, you'll be charmed before we even arrive in Germany's famous Rhine Valley. This back-in-time town is our wine tasting host for the evening. Squeal!!!

Day 10: Rhine Valley to Munich

Too much grape juice last night? Not to worry, the prospect of Munich should lift your spirits as we travel south & swap wine culture for beer.
Today our eyes will be treated to a famous gothic clock, a charming old town & traditional Bavarian culture. You'll have the option to explore the side streets by bicycle and afterwards why not choose to explore one of the cities many beer halls, where you can try a stein of beer or even a pork knuckle!

Day 11: Munich to Austrian Tyrol via Austrian Tyrol and Innsbruck

Goodbye Munich, hello mountains. We're hitting the road in search of lands so sweet they made The Sound of Music.
This part of the world is famous for adventure sports, so best put your name next to the optional White Water Rafting and get in the spirit of things
After some adventure time, its time to head to this famous Olympic town and your jaw will drop at the sight of the famous ski jump, and you'll have a chance to soak up the medieval old town atmosphere before it's back on the road to our Gasthof for the night!
Tonight you'll rest up in a local Austrian Gasthof (guest house) that is waiting for us with open arms. With so much fresh air to breathe in outside, explore the dreamy setting we've descended upon.

Day 12: Austrian Tyrol to Venice

Wake up roamers, we have a bountiful breakfast and a floating city in Italy to tend to. Life's tough!
You'll think you've seen enough beauty for one day after taking in the Central Austrian Alps & Brenner Pass en route to Italy. And then we'll arrive in Venice & your jaw will hit the floor over hidden lanes, story book bridges & a private canal boat ride.

Day 13: Venice to Rome

Farewell floating city, but Italy, we're not done with you yet, our next destination the Eternal City of Rome is just around the corner.
The afternoon will really take it up a notch as we uncover Italian icons in the country's capital of Rome as you get a glimpse of it's glory by night. Gelato, pizza and ancient monuments - perfecto!

Day 14: Rome with Vatican City

Rome wasn't built in a day - so get up and get going early to make the most of this ancient city.
When in Rome...take an optional guided tour of the Vatican Museums, including the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica. Religious or not, the Vatican's Italian Renaissance church will send shivers down your spine. This is also the day to learn a thing or two about the Colosseum & do a bit of your own exploring.
Then hit the streets for your own discoveries. Snap pink azaleas by the Colosseum, throw coins in fountains and sip espresso in a pretty street watching Italian life float by.

Day 15: Rome to Florence

We may be hitting the road again, but we're not done with Italy just yet. We have one more city to lust over…
The dome of Duomo Cathedral sits above the city making certain we know we have arrived in Florence. Take a moment to take in the unique beauty of this beautiful city where culture and la dolce vita is evident in every direction you look at. We'll become history buffs on a guided walking tour before we learn the art of leather. Tonight you can choose to begin your Tuscan love affair at an optional dinner - think olives, cured meats, crostini & wine.

Day 16: Florence to Lucerne

Say a fond farewell to Italy, and hello to the land of creamy chocolate, cheese and not to mention watches. Hello Switzerland!
Swans float under wooden bridges, snowcapped mountains stand regally behind us & chocolate tastes like heaven on earth. You're in the Swiss Alps & you cannot wipe the smile off your face. Eeek!!!

Day 17: Lucerne to Paris

Out with the altitude, in with the inner-city Parisian bliss. Once we've crossed the border out of Switzerland we will be coasting through the pretty wine producing region of Burgundy before our arrival in Paris.
Lamp-lit bridges, a sparkling Eiffel Tower, & evening coffee haunts, tonight we fall in love with everything Paris. Our Trip Manager fills us in on the city's secrets, then to celebrate our first night in the city, we'll head up to the viewing platform on Montparnasse tower.

Day 18: Paris

Fragonard Perfumery now there's a place to check out, and stock up on perfume, obviously! Especially given the greatly discounted prices and authenticity of buying in France. Later you can drool over haute couture, admire the Notre Dame Cathedral whilst juggling coffee and crêpes, & get artsy at the many exhibitions of the Louvre. Just don't wear yourself out, you will probably want to get involved with dinner and the Nouvelle Eve cabaret show. With your last night looming, make it one to remember in the city of lights.

Day 19: Paris to London

Soak up your last dose of Paris and feel the astonishment of how much you've seen during this awesome trip. And how close you've grown to your Contiki pals.

What a journey!? On arrival in London say a fond farewell to the group as you wrap up the journey on arrival.

I did the European Escapade tour in 2015 with Contiki and out of all my travelling memories from that year it certainly sticks out as the most wild!! The group I went on tour with made it all the worth while. The tour itself did the most touristy places in Europe you could imagine with about 2 days in each place. Definitely great for a taster of European culture and history. I loved it!!

I have to say, going on a Contiki was one of the most impulsive and incredible decisions I've ever made. It was without a doubt one of the most inspiring and breathtaking trips around Europe I've ever had the pleasure of doing, especially around places I'd never think to go and with people who are entirely like-minded! Deciding to go alone was probably the best decision, as I fit so seamlessly in with the people on my tour, it was like we'd known each other for ages! It was on my trip that I made the best friend I could ever hope for, and even went to her native Australia to spend more time with her once the trip was over! Contiki completely transformed my life, giving me more confidence, enthusiasm and excitement for life - I can't wait to go on another!!
