I’ve travelled with CW three times. This last trip is my last. You know how you can tell how good a business is when a crisis occurs? Such was the case on my last trip. Mega hurricane in Florida caused all flights to cancelled in Miami—just the place where many of our tour group had to fly through. Not only were the staff not ahead of the game (American airlines alerted us that flights were being cancelled, and that we needed to rebook ASAP, but CW REFUSED to take responsibility). After spending the night trying to handle things on our own (which we couldn’t do because CW booked our flights), finally, the next morning someone with authority finally said they would handle it—after an employee verbally stated several times (and in writing) that they WEREN’T responsible?! Over the next few days I tried in vain to reach anyone at the office that would acknowledge what occurred was really poor. I did get to hear how this employee was “a really good longtime employee.” No apology; but an offer of $500 was made “make me happy.” Wow—my whole point was missed. We were ignored, then patronized, how utterly frustrating.

Grrr! This experience was so bad that it’s taken me several months to write this review. Frankly, I kept thinking CW wasn’t worth it he time it would take me to write it. But, on the off-chance anyone reads these reviews, I actually felt responsible to warn anyone considering a booking with CW. DON’T.

We loved our CW trip to Peru! We had wonderful guides who were helpful, knowledgeable, and fun to be with. We especially liked the special cultural immersion opportunities created by CW such as the weaving demonstration, family visits and home-cooked meals, corn beer and coin toss recreation stop, etc. This made the trip much more meaningful and gave us more of a flavor of Peru than hiking and sight seeing alone. Everything was top notch and we knew we were in good hands for the week. Thank you for an extraordinary experience.

Phone interactions are exceptional. Employees are well informed about travel in general and your tours in particular-they speak with authority and from personal experience with your offerings. They call back promptly with answers and even help with the occasional related but not tour specific problem. The materials sent are helpful. I especially like the suggested reading materials. Have enjoyed all of our trips and have recommended CW in the past and will continue to do so

CW is a great company

CW is a great company. I have been on two adventures with CW and both have exceeded my expectations. I only have two slightly negative things: 1. the levels of difficulty are not really accurate. For instance, both trips I took were rated easy to moderate and both were easy to challenging. This was a topic of conversation among my fellow hikers and they all agreed. One hiker said that he heard that CW rates them as easier than they are as they wouldn't get the participation they need if they rated them more realistically. 2. I would prefer to stop along the way more than is programmed. I understand that the itinerary drives the distance but there are so many things I didn't get to see as my head was down while walking instead of being able to look up and take it all in.

While the CW team was good, it was not 5 star as the client team relationship was limited with no follow up. Other travel companies use a more connected approach. I don't see me using CW again.

I think the worst thing that Country Walkers has done was merge with VBT. I don't get a real person when I call, I get agents that have no idea about what country walkers is or should be. It has turned into a numbers game and your guests are the losers. The damnation of a once good company.

Accomodations

The Manor House Hotel, Moreton-in-Marsh

On the main street of Moreton-in-Marsh, a 16th-century golden-stone manor converted into a classic country-house luxury hotel. Bedrooms are stylishly decorated with modern furnishings and warm colors, and feature views of the surrounding town and countryside. Common rooms include a library, inviting sofas, striking artwork, and an open terrace on the ground floor onto a tranquil garden with herbaceous borders, pathways, and a 300-year-old mulberry tree. Moreton-in-Marsh has been a market town since the 1,200s and a travelers’ stop for 1,700 years; its main street has many 18th-century inns and houses.

Cotswold House Hotel & Spa, Chipping Campden

In addition to its award-winning spa, fine food, and exemplary service, the Cotswold House boasts an idyllic location in the heart of the beautiful market town of Chipping Campden at the start of the Cotswold Way walking route. Spacious and comfortable guest rooms offer views over either the dazzling two-acre gardens or Chipping Campden’s historic High Street. The town that was once the center of Europe’s wool trade contains the region’s most beautiful “wool church” and rows of historical stone houses.

Broadway Hotel, Broadway

A 16th-century coaching inn on the main street of the “Jewel of the Cotswolds” features tastefully appointed rooms surrounding a small central courtyard. Guestrooms, located in a converted wing, are luxuriously furnished and decorated in light colors. Bar, restaurant, and lounge areas on the ground floor have low beams, open fires, warm colors, and paneled walls. The honey-colored limestone buildings and garden-lined streets were an inspiration to many artists and writers, such as J.M. Barrie and John Singer Sargent.

The Slaughters Country Inn, Lower Slaughter

A rural manor converted into a stylish boutique hotel, blending traditional architecture and furniture with strategically placed modern art. Plush guest rooms incorporate vintage and handmade furnishings and luxurious linens. Occupying manicured gardens on the bank of the River Eye, the inn is just a 15-minute stroll along country paths to Bourton-on-the-Water, the Cotswolds’ best-known village for its picturesque streets, series of bridges over the Windrush River, and bird habitat.
