Short Description

"Belize may be one of the world's smallest countries, but it's massive when it comes to natural riches. A wealth of wonders is tucked within its compact borders - from the extensive network of wildlife sanctuaries that are home to monkeys, tapirs and toucans to the rivers and lagoons that dot its vast jungle. And that's just ashore...

Wade into the warm waters off Belize's tropical coastline and uncover a kaleidoscope of fish, coral and even sea turtles. Snorkel through the azure sea and relax along palm-lined beaches that seem almost too picturesque. Enjoy the laidback nature of the colorful coastal villages where the rhythms of Caribbean music can be heard in the streets.

And when we're done exploring each day, the pleasures of the finest eco-lodges in Belize await. Handpicked for their location, elegance and charm, these hotels reflect Belize's natural environment while providing a relaxing home-away-from-home. From hiking in the jungle to discovering tropical paradise, spend quality time together as a family while you uncover this breathtaking living nature museum.

Small groups are usually defined as between 10 and 24 travelers, often less. If you're the kind of person who enjoys more intimate experiences and personal service this is a good choice. All else being equal you will pay a premium for this style vs a larger group tour.

Itinerary

Day 1:

Meals: Dinner

You’ll be met at the airport by a Discover Corps representative. Drive a couple of hours to San Ignacio, the vibrant town in the heart of the jungle region where you’ll stay at one of the most exquisite lodges that combines environmental sustainability with understated luxury.

Day 2:

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Get oriented to the flora and fauna of the area by a local naturalist guide. Spend a couple of hours lending a hand in a butterfly farm raising Blue Morpho butterflies. This hands-on experience is an unforgettable way to experience the lifecycle of a butterfly. From collecting the eggs to prepare the pupa to collecting food for the adult butterflies, this is an impactful way to become part of one of Mother Nature’s most beautiful processes. After lunch, there’s time to relax in the infinity pool or the option to visit the spa for a massage or other treatments. Later in the afternoon, we’ll tour the jungle with our naturalist guide to learn about the symbiotic relationship between its plants and animals.

Day 3:

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Take a journey into the Mayan underworld at Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) cave. Recently deemed the #1 Sacred Cave destination in the world by National Geographic, the ATM cave is not only beautiful geologically, with its crystalline stalactites and stalagmites, but also historically this museum of ancient Mayan artifacts also serves a sacred burial place. This day tour involves hiking through the rainforest, wading through pools of water, and climbing through caves. Water depth alternates from just covering your toes to portions where only the tallest won't need to swim. Along the way, we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch. In the evening, accompany your naturalist guide on our Creatures of the Night hike through the jungle.

Day 4:

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

After breakfast, go behind the scenes at an iguana breeding project. Have a chance to feed and bathe these threatened creatures. On the way to Belize City, accompany a boat with conservationists tracking manatees. Learn about the plight of these beautiful sea creatures while viewing them in the wild. Afterwards, fly to Ambergris Caye and check-in to our beachfront hotel overlooking glistening turquoise waters.

Day 5:

Meals: Breakfast and Lunch

Board a private catamaran boat and tour the world’s second longest barrier reef. We’ll stop to snorkel at two of Belize’s most famous spots: Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley. Due to the protected status of

the area, the fish populations have exploded. In waters as shallow as 5 feet, large schools of jacks, groupers, snappers and rays abound. Along the way, stop at a pristine beach for a private barbecue on the sand. The evening is free for you to enjoy dinner at one of the many nearby restaurants.

Day 6:

Meals: Breakfast and Dinner

Today is free to enjoy the natural beauty of the caye as you see fit. Whether you want to relax on the beach, swim in the pool, or shop at the boutiques located in walking distance from the hotel. Those wishing to

SCUBA dive or snorkel may book a diving excursion at any of the nearby dive shops. End the evening with a special farewell dinner to recount tales with the whole group.

Day 7:

Meal: Breakfast

The morning is free to enjoy at your leisure. The time of your 15 minute flight back to Belize City will depend on the schedule of your return flight home or to the post-trip extension to Tikal (see below).

I went on their Kenya Safari trip and it was fabulous. They took great care in choosing the most perfect accommodations for the trip to Kenya. Ol’ Pejeta was fabulous and plentiful with animals. The Sweetwater camp inside the conservancy is true glamping with 5 Star service and food. Sweetwater is located on a watering hole where you can sit and watch Elephants, Rhino, Zebra, Warthogs, birds and Giraffes come and drink. Inside the Masai Mara we stayed at Asilia again another 5 star establishment. The animal sightings in the Mara are just amazing, breakfast is provided out on the open plains of the Mara while watching zebra and wildebeest stroll by. Then happy hour with cocktails are provided on the open plains while watching the incredible African sunset (unlike anything you have ever seen). The service provided at both locations was top notch. Discover Corps chose amazing places and designed a fabulous itinerary for our days in Africa. I would recommend this trip to anyone.

It was an amazing trip, I was nervous at first because I was not really familiar with Discover Corp. Now, I won't hesitate in the future to sign on for another adventure. I loved the experience of working with the elephants and especially enjoyed meeting Leslie (the elephant guru from Minnesota ) who lives and volunteers with the elephants, He had a wealth of knowledge regarding the elephants, Buddhism and Thai customs The rest of your staff EEM, AVN and Thay (I know I am butchering their names) were wonderful, very helpful, friendly and conscientious and I very much enjoyed meeting each of them,

The Chiang Mai Hotel was great but it took me a while to figure out how to get in and out of the neighborhood. The surrounding streets were like a maze, quite narrow and difficult to find my way, I expected to have a hotel on a main thoroughfare. The massage instead of the zip line was a perfect trade off and the chat with the monk was most enlightening and another good trade off for the river rafting.

8/29/19 Discover Corps #2 Kenya Safari and Conservation
Just back from my second Discover Corps trip, this time to Kenya. Had a wonderful time, enjoyed my 5 fellow travelers, we had lots of laughs together during game drives and over cocktails. We saw one zillion animals and birds and learned about their habitat and behaviors from our excellent, very patient, guides.

Our first camp was at Ol Pejeta Conservancy which was a well manicured camp with great views of a variety of animals rhinos, zebras, elephants and a marabou stork (who often watched us eat through the window of our dining area). The variety and quality of the food was outstanding. One of our excursions was to a search/rescue/bomb sniffing dog training facility. Very interesting to watch the dogs in action, they were all looked very well cared for and loved our attention.

After 4 days at Ol Pejeta, we spent 2 days at the old Brackenhurst Hotel located on a huge oasis of gorgeous indigenous plants.

The last 4 days were spent in Mara and Naboisho Camp which I felt was more "the real Africa". The camp was less manicured than the Ol Pejeta Sweetwater Tented camp and I enjoyed the fabulous game views of the lions and cheetahs. Of course, for me, the warthogs are a real favorite with their huge head/snout/tusks contrasted by their dainty walk with their long tails raised high. Delightful!

My family (me, my husband, and 3 kids ages 17, 14, and 11) took a 2-week trip to Peru in August and used Discover Corps to organize several days of service while we were there. It was an incredible experience that we will never forget, and one of the highlights of our entire trip. Miguel, our host and guide, was so informative and kind and made us feel like family. We loved spending time with him and the children in the community -- doing arts and crafts, flying kites, eating meals, and teaching them English. We also got to visit an orphanage and a local NGO where women produce dolls that are sold around the world. It gave us an incredible perspective on the country and our lives as well. When my daughter sprained her ankle, Miguel took us to the clinic in the main city, and we got excellent and expeditious care. We couldn't have asked for a better experience. It was just what we wanted, and I highly recommend this trip and the organization.

We just came back from a family reunion in the Dominican Republic of 28 ages 5 to 77. It was absolutely wonderful. The food was excellent and the staff and people were delightful. Being part of a service project with the whole family created a memory that will be enjoyed in the years to come. I highly recommend this organization.

The Kenya Safari & Conservation trip was truly spectacular. We learned so many fun facts about wildlife, saw some amazing stuff like a male lion climbing a tree and got a great first-hand look at whats involved in wildlife conservation. The guides were incredibly knowledgable, they answered all my strange animal and cultural questions with ease. They were committed to providing an amazing experience for all of us. The accommodations were beyond what I could have imagined. The luxury tents were so comfortable and kept out all bugs. Plus the service and food were outstanding. If you love animals, and have safari on your bucket list then this trip is a must!

The guides were fun, friendly and so knowledgable. The luxury tents were so cool; bug proof, comfy beds and hot showers! The food and fresh juices were delicious. I learned so much about wildlife and conservation efforts. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming, plus English is very prominent there. Kenya is such a great place to go on safari. In addition to seeing every animal you could imagine, this trip really offers a great look into the Kenyan culture, different tribes, art, music and way of life. Loved every minute of this trip!
