Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive and Enjoy a Sichuan Hotpot.

Meals: Dinner

A warm welcome awaits at Chengdu International Airport where we’ll introduce you to your Discover Corps group. We’ll then whisk you away to your four-star hotel in the bustling downtown Chengdu area to enjoy a traditional Sichuan Hotpot, a warm, flavorful broth for dipping meat and vegetables. After, you’ll have a free evening to recharge in your beautiful hotel room. 

Day 2: Visit Chengdu’s Panda Breeding Research Center and Visit Xi'an to see the Terracotta Warriors

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

We’ll spend the morning at Chengdu’s Panda Breeding Research Center, learning all about China’s most iconic animal and the crucial conservation work done there. Seeing the pandas enjoying their bamboo breakfasts is an incredible way to start the day.After lunch, we’ll head to the world’s largest stone, Visit Xi'an to see the Terracotta Warriors. Truly one of the most spectacular sites in all of China, it stands 233 feet tall, carved into the cliffs overlooking the Yangtze River.In the evening, we’ll visit a traditional teahouse to take in some wonderful Sichuan Opera and a mesmerizing Chinese face-changing act. 

Day 3: Lend a Hand at the Dejingyan Panda Research Center

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Hands-on work with the pandas begins today! We’ll introduce you to the conservationists at the Dejingyan Panda Research Center, who will in turn introduce you to the pandas. You’ll have the choice to help clean the enclosures before experiencing the magic of hand-feeding the pandas. After a couple of hours of working with the rangers and the pandas, you’ll have some free time to stop for lunch and explore the center at your own pace, as the pandas take their early afternoon rest.Afterward, you can choose to continue helping out at the center or head back to relax in your hotel room. Back in Chengdu, spend a free night discovering the lively atmosphere of the local family-run restaurants.

Day 4: Panda Volunteering and Visit to Chengdu’s Tibetan Quarter

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

We’ll spend another morning bonding with the pandas at the center, where you’ll receive a certificate of recognition of your efforts. In the afternoon, you’ll have some free time to explore the beautiful countryside and we’ll point you in the direction of some very picturesque walking trails.You’ll spend the evening meandering through Chengdu’s Tibetan quarter, filled with Tibetan shops and cafés. Take the chance to sample tasty and interesting regional delicacies, including yak dumplings. 

Day 5: Beijing Summer Palace and Panjiayuan Flea Market

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Today, we’ll make the three-hour flight to Beijing where you’ll check into your charming hotel in the heart of the city. Join us on a trip to the spectacular Summer Palace, the former imperial garden and the largest, most well-preserved royal park in China. Between April and October, we’ll also take a scenic boat ride across the lake.After lunch, barter your way through the famous Panjiayuan Flea Market looking for Mao’s Little Red Book and other era-defining artifacts. In the evening, you’ll be treated to a traditional Chinese Peking roast duck dinner.

Day 6: Tai Chi Class andVisit to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Join the locals who start each morning with a Tai Chi session in the park as you learn the basics from an expert instructor. After, relax in the Temple of Heaven, where you’ll be surrounded by stunning imperial Chinese architecture, and experience a traditional Chinese tea ceremony in a local teahouse.After lunch, we’ll benefit from the expert knowledge of a local guide who will lead our visit to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. Take in breathtaking views of historic Beijing from Jingshan Park before watching an astonishing evening performance by Chinese acrobats.

Day 7: The Great Wall of China

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Today, you’ll experience one of the Wonders of the Modern World, the Great Wall of China. We’ll explore the wall’s Mutianyu section, where you’ll even have the chance to take an optional Toboggan ride. Next, take a cable car down from the wall before heading to Beijing’s old streets and hopping in a Hutong rickshaw. A tour in one of these open-air carts pulled by rickshaw drivers is the most exciting way to get to know this captivating city.Dinner brings something truly special as we introduce you to a local family who will invite you into their home for a hearty, homemade Hutong-style family meal. It’s the perfect farewell before embarking on your trip home the next day.

Day 8: Return Home

Meals: Breakfast

We’ll bring you to Beijing International Airport for your flight home after a Middle Kingdom adventure filled with close-up nature panda encounters, insights into local life and tours of striking historic sites. If you’re joining us on the Xi’an and Shanghai extension, you’ll instead board a bullet train south to start building yet more incredible memories.
