Short Description

Discover the rare and beautiful creatures that call Costa Rica’s beaches and rainforest home, learn what it takes to protect these species from outside harm, and contribute to Costa Rica’s world-leading conservation efforts.

It’s not for no reason that Costa Rica got its name, which translates as ‘Rich Coast’. This small country is home to a staggering selection of natural landscapes and wildlife, home to an amazing 5% of the world’s biodiversity – more than Europe and the United States combined.

This riot of life is found across lush rainforest, rugged mountains, firespitting volcanoes, and beautiful beaches – all in an area the size of West Virginia, meaning you can explore it in a matter of days. Your journey will see you getting up close to some familiar faces from the natural world. At a sanctuary, you’ll meet some of the famously somnolent creatures who have been sadly orphaned, while at the Jaguar Rescue Center in the Punta Uva forest you’ll get to know one of South America’s most iconic big cats.

Small groups are usually defined as between 10 and 24 travelers, often less. If you're the kind of person who enjoys more intimate experiences and personal service this is a good choice. All else being equal you will pay a premium for this style vs a larger group tour.

Itinerary

Day 1: Take the Scenic Drive into the Rainforest to Ara Ambigua

Meals: Dinner

Touching down at Juan Santamaria Airport in San Jose, you’ll join your Discover Corps group and be greeted by your Costa Rican guide. We’ll then be whisked away by our driver on a scenic drive to La Guaria de Sarapiquí, crossing the Continental Divide and admiring vast mountain ranges en route.

Day 2: Tour La Selva Biological Station, and Go Rafting or Visit a Pineapple Farm

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

After breakfast, depart for a tour of the world famous La Selva Biological Station, recognized as a world-leading tropical forest research station. A private, expert-guided nature walk will see us spotting sloths, howler monkeys, white-faced monkeys, and more in one of the area's most biodiverse regions. After lunch, enjoy either white water rafting along the Sarapiqui River (Adventure Supplement) or an organic pineapple plantation tour – with the added benefit of fresh piña coladas.

Day 3: Head to the Caribbean Coast and Visit the Jaguar Rescue Center

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Today we’re immersed into the laid-back, colorful culture of the Caribbean Coast, meeting the locals and learning about the area’s rich history. After lunch, we visit the Jaguar Rescue Center in the heart of the Punta Uva forest and see, first-hand, the rescue efforts to save not only jaguars but also injured armadillos, howler and white-faced monkeys, porcupines, sloths, and more.

Day 4: Relax on the Beach for a Free Day

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Continue to Cahuita National Park and enjoy a relaxing time hiking on the beach, snorkeling and exploring the marine wildlife. If weather does not permit, board a boat and participate in a dolphin watch out on the water.

Day 5: Visit Tortuguero and Participate in Sea Turtle Conservation Projects

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Today we make for the aptly named Tortuguero – the Place of Turtles. After the four-hour scenic drive, we’ll enjoy a homemade lunch with a local family before our day of turtle education and activities. Between November-May, visit a renowned turtle conservation center and learn from staff about the turtles who call Costa Rica home. Participate in a beach cleanup to ensure that the turtles have a clear runway for their hatching*. At dusk, venture back out to the beaches in search of hatchlings before a dinner with the group. Between June-October, we’ll take a boat to the Caño Palma Biological Station. Here, researchers will teach you about turtle conservation before participating in a cleanup of one of Costa Rica's finest stretches of sand. After your cleanup around dusk, drive along the beach in search of nesting turtles.

Day 6: Canoe Through Tortuguero

An early start sees us exploring the breath-taking Tortuguero waterways on a canoe trip, spotting parrots, macaws, king fishers, river otters, and more. In the late afternoon, we’ll take a cooking class and learn how to cook a range of tapas that are representative of traditional Costa Rican dishes.

Day 7: Meet Rescued Toucans

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Entering the Central Valley of Costa Rica, we’ll stop at a toucan rescue center and see their rescued wildlife. You’ll see not only toucans, but other injured critters including jaguars – and take a deeper dive into Costa Rican conservation efforts, learning what you can do to help. Then we’ll continue to our final destination, a guest house set in Costa Rica's San Jose Valley.

Day 8: Return Home

Meals: Breakfast

Your journey reaches its end today, as we enjoy breakfast before saying our goodbyes and transferring you to the airport for your flight home.

Discover Corps Peru was an incredible, eye-opening experience. Volunteering alongside local communities, meeting fascinating people and exploring Machu Picchu made were just a few of the highlights during my stay. Would recommend this to anyone interested in traveling deeper and giving back in a meaningful way.
