Overview

Highlights

  • Experience guided trek through the Viñales Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Take a ride a boat down a river that winds through caves
  • Relax on the sandy beaches of Cayo Levisa
  • Visit a stunning waterfall that lies in the middle of an eco-community

Short Description

The journey begins in Havana where you’ll witness a country on the verge change. Explore the city’s most famous squares and sample some its best restaurants. Like taking a step back in time, watch as vintage cars rumble along the malecon – Havana’s famous seaside boardwalk.

From Havana, head west to Las Terrazas, one of Cuba’s first eco-villages and coffee plantations and the Viñales Valley, where relaxed village life meets dramatic mountain landscapes. You’ll even have the chance to spend time on a tropical Cuban “Caye”, or offshore island, that boasts stunning white sand beaches and warm turquoise waters

Small groups are usually defined as between 10 and 24 travelers, often less. If you're the kind of person who enjoys more intimate experiences and personal service this is a good choice. All else being equal you will pay a premium for this style vs a larger group tour.

Itinerary

Day 1:

Arrive in Varadero International Airport and hit the ground running in Havana with a panoramic tour of the city’s main sites including the malecon, Revolution Square and Vedado. A scrumptious lunch at an authentic paladar overlooking the city followed by a walking tour of Old Havana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is stuck in time. There will be a small welcome dinner on the first evening with the local staff introducing you to the dynamic, yet laid-back vibe of the island.

Days 2-3:

Hit the road to Las Terrazas, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve tucked in the heart of the Cuban countryside. Over the next two days, we’ll visit one of Cuba’s first coffee plantations, venture out on a guided bird watching trek and meet with artisans from the small eco-village that continues to persist here. One morning, we’ll visit the famous San Juan River to soak in the waterfalls and natural swimming pools. Spend another morning sampling freshly prepared coffee and vegetarian food sourced directly from the valley.

Day 4:

Uncover quite possibly the most enchanting region of Cuba – the Viñales Valley. Large rocky cliffs, called “magotes”, line the lush valley interspersed with small farms and traditional communities. Spend the morning at one of the largest orchid gardens in Cuba followed by a visit to an agro-ecological farm seeing firsthand Cuba’s organic farming heritage. Our visit will culminate with a delicious lunch overlooking the valley alongside the staff of the farm. Later in the afternoon, take a tour of lovely relaxing center of town meeting the colorful locals along the way. We’ll even have the chance to see a mural painted on the side of one of the cliffs depicting the valley’s ancient past.

Day 5:

Spend a full-day on a nearby tropical island, Cayo Levisa. “Discovered” by Ernest Hemingway in the 40’s, Cayo Levisa is paradise – fine white sand, torquise waters and swaying palms. Only a 45 minute boat ride from the mainland, Cayo Levisa is in a world unto itself. Enjoy lunch on the island with the morning and afternoon free to relax on the pristine beaches or to rent a snorkel and explore sapphire waters of the Caribbean. In the evening, return to Viñales for dinner and a night out in the town.

Day 6:

Start the day off with a morning trek through the Viñales Valley. This extraordinary landscape supports a population of about 25,000 people, many of whom grow coffee, tobacco, sugarcane and bananas. Along the way, meet with tobacco and coffee farmers while taking in limestone cliffs that soar high above. After lunch, explore a the Cueva del Indio, an ancient cave with a meandering river that you can ride a boat through. A private botanical garden tour followed by a lovely dinner in the center of town will cap off a wonderful five days in the west of Cuba.

Days 7-8:

Spend the last couple of days in the vivacious capital of Havana. Explore the narrow, cobblestone streets of Havana taking in the salsa music that echoes along the alleyways. After some last minute shopping in one of Havana’s many handicrafts markets, enjoy a cocktail making class and a meal at one of Havana’s most famous restaurants – Sloppy Joe’s.

Discover Corps Peru was an incredible, eye-opening experience. Volunteering alongside local communities, meeting fascinating people and exploring Machu Picchu made were just a few of the highlights during my stay. Would recommend this to anyone interested in traveling deeper and giving back in a meaningful way.
