Day 1: Arrive in Athens, transfer to hotel
We meet you on your arrival in Athens airport today and transfer you to your hotel in the city center. Subject to final flight arrival times, we will arrange a visit to a viewpoint to photograph the phenomenal, ancient Acropolis in the twilight. Right off the bat, Brian and Me Ra will begin teaching photographic skills that you'll practice all week!
OVERNIGHT:
Athens hotel
EXTRAS:
Extra day in Athens - pre-tour

Day 2: Athens tour
Today we start with a group photo assignment specific to what you will be seeing! We dive into the ancient city of Athens. Our visits will include the colorful and vibrant Plaka area, and the spectacular neighborhood of Anafiotika, with quaint winding streets and houses covered with flowers all nestled into the cliffs below the Acropolis. After finding a taverna for a leisurely lunch, we explore one of the most important and famous ancient sites in the world, the Acropolis, which sits on top of a rocky hill overlooking the city, providing great views. The afternoon light is ideal to photograph the numerous temples and ancient sites here. You'll see the temple of Olympian Zeus and Hadrian's Arch, which formed a symbolic entrance to the city. You'll also tour the Temple of Nike, the most famous of Greek relics, the Parthenon, and see the original home of the marble sculptures removed by Lord Elgin that are now held in the British Museum in London. Subject to time, while at the Acropolis you could also visit the impressive museum, the towering entrance of Propylaea, the Erechtheion, and the Temple of the Athene Nike. In the evening enjoy a delicious traditional Greek meal, review your images, and reflect on a full first day exploring and photography.

Athens hotel
MEALS:
Breakfast, Dinner

Day 3: Fly to Milos and tour the island
Put on your sun hat and island clothes! With a new photo exercise, we check out early and head to the airport to fly to the island of Milos where we stay in a friendly family hotel in the main village of Adamas. We are here in Milos at the very start of the season which is an ideal time to visit! Spring flowers should still be in bloom, the weather will be warm and sunny, but the island will still be quiet and free from the large numbers of tourists who visit from June to August. We'll spend the day exploring the island's beautiful scenery and discovering with your camera why it's called the 'Island of Colours'. We'll drive through the beautiful hilly interior and visit Pollonia town and beach, the amazing moon-like landscape at Sarakiniko, the small port of Mandrakia and Firopotamos village. Finally, we'll hope for a spectacular sunset from Klima fishing village. In the evening, we'll enjoy a traditional Greek meal in a local restaurant.
OVERNIGHT:
Milos Hotel
MEALS:
Breakfast, Dinner

Day 4: Milos exploration
We have the whole day to explore Milos today with our entertaining guide who is a local favorite! We'll continue to concentrate on capturing some of the vivid, colorful scenery and rock formations created by the volcanic history of the island. We'll visit the abandoned Sulphur mines which feel like a ghost town, before visiting the famous beaches at Paliochori and Firiplaka. There will be time for a swim and sunbathe, though the waters will still be fairly cool at this time of year. Finally, we'll ascend to the Kastro at sunset for an amazing and iconic view out across the sea with the church in the foreground. Brian and Me Ra will teach you techniques and strategies for capturing gorgeous sunset travel themed photography with high contrast in fading, golden light.
OVERNIGHT:
Milos Hotel
MEALS:
Breakfast, Dinner

Day 5: Milos to Santorini
If you haven't taken a deep, wonderful breath yet, you will exhale even more with today's turn of events. We leave Milos and our new local friends reluctantly this morning and take the ferry to the epic, volcanic island of Santorini. On arrival, we get our first view of the huge underwater caldera and surrounding cliffs that were created by a massive volcanic eruption in the 16th century. The two main towns of the island, Fira and Oia cling to these cliffs with their iconic whitewashed, cubist style houses overlooking the bay and beaches made up of black, red and white lava pebbles. It's a spectacular setting and our hotel is located minutes from the centre of a vibrant and exciting town to base ourselves for the next few days. After leaving the airport we have time to check in to our hotel before we head out for a late lunch and for a first taste of our surroundings. Breathe in the sea air and feel the warm sun, as we explore our new home with the camera before a great evening meal.
OVERNIGHT:
Santorini hotel
MEALS:
Breakfast, Dinner

Day 6: Santorini wine tasting, cooking course & village exploration
You can't fully appreciate the culture until you understand a bit of their cuisine. Today we treat you with a fun & informative wine and food tour in Santorini, followed by a culinary feast filled with Santorini flavors and traditional Greek delights. The day starts with a visit to a charming vineyard learning about the unique viticulture that makes Santorini's vine-growing respected worldwide for its distinctive means of production. During the tour, we'll visit two traditional Santorini wineries and taste the island's signature wines such as Assyrtiko, Nykteri and Vinsanto. With wide angle lenses, we'll capture iconic vineyard imagery. Then we'll help a local chef prepare a feast of three Santorini signature dishes at a traditional restaurant before enjoying the fruits of our labors at the end of the cooking lesson. The first half of the day will be full of incredible photo opportunities with culinary close ups, still life and wide shots of scenery for setting. You'll put on your travel photographer hat and follow Me Ra and Brian with a fun photo exercise to add to the cooking class! Late in the afternoon we head to Oia village, the quintessential Greek village that's known for its sugar cube houses and gorgeous blue-domed churches. The village is renowned as the place on the island to see the sunset, with its streets stacked into the side of the cliffs overlooking the spectacular caldera. We'll follow our guide up to the old ruins of an ancient Venetian castle, known as the Kastro of Oia, and gaze down from the village and caldera to the sea. Me Ra and Brian will help set you up for success in capturing one of the most picturesque scenes you'll ever photograph at sunset. Note - there are a lot of steps and steep walks up and down through the villages involved on this tour so you need to be relatively fit and mobile to make the best of your time here.
OVERNIGHT:
Santorini hotel
MEALS:
Breakfast, Lunch

Day 7: Santorini boat trip & Red Beach
We take to the water this morning for a boat trip in the Caldara (approx. 5 hours). This will give us a different perspective to the villages on the surrounding cliffs, as well as take us past the Venetian Lighthouse and to several beautiful private bays for swimming and snorkeling. We'll also visit the hot springs and enjoy a delicious barbecue lunch in a secluded bay. Finally, we return past Aspronisi and the Volcanic Islands to Vlihada Marina. In the afternoon, we visit Santorini's famous Red Beach. The red cliffs, sand and sea here make for some beautiful images, as well as giving us some downtime to relax. You'll have time to explore with your camera, do some souvenir shopping, and meet up for a photo review with Brian and Me Ra. After dinner, we'll set up to capture another viewpoint of the sunset on white-washed cubist home, share a glass of wine, and when the stars are high, Brian will lead one of his popular astro-star photography night sessions. These night sessions are always a BIG highlight on the tour!

Being a little sun kissed and full of inspiration, we take the morning to capture some final shots of the winding, vivid colored streets and scenery before heading to the airport to return to Athens. In the afternoon, we visit the huge and bustling public market in the center of Athens for some final sightseeing, great photo opportunities, and souvenir shopping! In the evening, we enjoy a final meal together and look back on what we've enjoyed capturing. We'll reflect on your photography skills and how your knowledge has developed. And be on the lookout, there may be a few, final surprises from Me Ra and Brian!

I just got back from the Discover Egypt tour and I don't have enough good things to say. Our guide, Mohamed El Zawahry is an Egyptologist and is incredibly knowledgeable and entertaining. I took my 2 kids, ages 12 and 16, and he did such an amazing job with them (and everyone else). Honestly as a blond haired, green eyed westerner I was a bit nervous about safety issues, but couldn't have felt better than I did (and I'm not a novice traveler). We saw so many things, learned so much, I only wish I would have added the Jordan trip on the front end of this tour! I had a medical complication in the middle of the trip and Mohammad and Walid went out of their way to help accommodate me. They made this trip so much more than it could have been! I highly recommend all of the 'extra' tours- Abu Simble, hot air balloon, Philae Temple- all incredible. Thanks for everything! My kids are still in awe!

I just got back from my amazing trip to Egypt!
My tour was Discover Egypt from January 13 to January 21, 2018... What can I say?! I grew up with a fascination for Egypt and I feel so blessed I was able to go, with so many dates as an option, once I saw the date of my birthday, that was it! What better way to spend my birthday than in a country that has always been on the top of my bucket list !
I was lucky to meet an amazing group of people that shared my desire to see this amazing place and every single person involved in this tour was absolutely amazing! My tour guy Big Mo was the best! I felt very safe and well taken care of from the moment I landed in Egypt to the day I left. I really appreciated the birthday celebration as well!
I miss every single moment I lived during those days.
I went with a fascination and left loving Egypt, it’s culture and it’s beautiful people.
I will treasure this experience forever.

My husband and I booked the Discover Egypt trip in February 2017 and traveled in may 2017 and it was even more than we could have asked or dreamed it would be. Our group was led by Magz and we learned so much about Egyptian history and current culture. The trip was well organized and communication before during and after the trip was incredible. I have recommended this company to anyone who asks and can't wait to take another trip with them in the future. For any additional questions feel free to message me - I'm happy to provide more feedback. Thank you encounters for the trip of a lifetime!

Encounters Travel Discover Egypt is the most comprehensive tour I've ever been on.They met us at the airport getting off the plane and took us back to the airport and saw that we got through security and everything in between. It is very safe in Egypt. You can walk the streets and when telling people that ask that we were from America we were met with smiles and positive comments. Because of the low number of tourists in the country right now Encounters Travel has negotiated with the hotels to stay in 5 star hotels. The pyramids are spectacular but it's only a small part of what you will see. Right now there are no crowds. An example My Wife and I took an optional tour to some pyramids southwest of Cairo. We went inside the Red Pyramid to the burial chambers. Two people passed us going in and two people passed us going out. That's 4 other people in the pyramid with us. All of the people with Encounters Travel are there to see to it that you have an enjoyable time and are extremely helpful. Our tour guide Big Mo is very knowledgeable and friendly. The Encounters agent in Hurghada, Mohamed,( I think everyone in Egypt is that name,HaHa) Was extremely pleasant and fun to be with. When Anass, the Encounters manager found out that my wife couldn't walk far he arraigned for a wheel chair to tour the Egyptian museum so she could see it all. This was my second time going on the Discover Egypt tour. I went last year with my son and when my wife heard all of our stories she wanted to see it. Someone asked her on the way home what her favorite part was and she replied "All of it" If you ever thought of going to Egypt now is the time.
