Short Description

Horseback riding in Cappadocia, a region in central Turkey, allows you to experience the history and beauty of the area.  It has been a meeting ground for European and Asian civilizations since long before the time of Alexander the Great.  More than two thousand years ago the ancient Greeks wrote about the fine horses raised in Cappadocia.  Those horses are the ancestors of the animals used now for the ride through this fascinating region.

Small groups are usually defined as between 10 and 24 travelers, often less. If you're the kind of person who enjoys more intimate experiences and personal service this is a good choice. All else being equal you will pay a premium for this style vs a larger group tour.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival at Kayseri Airport. Transfer and check in at hotel in Avanos or if it is a late afternoon flight drive directly to the Riding Center. Enjoy a welcoming drink and meet the horses. Over dinner at the ranch, we have a briefing on the week ahead. Overnight in hotel.

Day 2

Breakfast at the hotel. Pick up from the hotel at 9 am and transfer to the Riding Center. Ride from Avanos to Ozkonak where you will visit one of Cappadocia ́s largest underground cities. . When excavated, the city revealed ten floors that could have housed 60,000 people for three months at a time. You will be able to visit the first four levels. Özkonak has a water well, ventilation system, winery and moving stone doors. Return over Ziyaretdagi Mountain to Avanos. Upon return, if you would like, you can visit a local pottery factory to enjoy the art form for which Avanos has been well known since the time of the Hittites. Dinner in Avanos or Akhal-Teke Riding Center. Overnight in hotel. (5 hours riding)

Day 3

Breakfast at the hotel and pickup at the hotel at 9 am. Ride from Avanos to Sarihidir, a tiny fishing village on the Red River where you can have a tea break at a local cafe. Continue on to Sarihan, a beautifully restored 13th century caravanserai for lunch. The afternoon ride is amongst Cappadocia's famed fairy chimneys of Zelve, Pasabagi to Cavusin and return to ranch. After drinks return to the hotel to change and at 5:30 you will be taken to attend the dervish performance at the Sarahan caravanserai that begins at 6 pm . Dinner in Avanos or Akhal-Teke Riding Center. Overnight in the hotel. (4-5 hours riding)

Day 4

Breakfast at the hotel and pick-up from the hotel at 9am. Ride from the riding center through the vineyards of the Dereyamanli valley and on through the tranquil White Valley for lunch amongst the grand monolithic rock formations. After lunch ride across the Göreme Valley where we you will enjoy panoramic views over the Rose and Red Valley in the distance. As you reach the outskirts of the old fortress town of Ortahisar you will ride past caves that since ancient times have been used to store lemons, oranges and quince from the Mediterranean. Ortahisar is a very friendly and picturesque old town with beautiful old stone houses, narrow streets and the castle-like rock formation from which one can climb up and take in some marvelous views over the fairy chimneys and the snow-capped peak of Mt Erciyes. Dinner in Ortahisar. Overnight in hotel. (5 hours riding)

Day 5

After breakfast you ride out through the Balkan Deresi Valley, with its many dove-cotes and beautiful rock formations, passing through walnut groves and pumpkin fields along the way. Stop in Mustafapasa (in Ottoman times known as ‘Sinassos’) that was once home to a Greek Orthodox community of wealthy merchants who settled here in the late 18th and 19th centuries. The town is famous for its neo-classical facades and the ornate carved stonework of its houses. After a glass of tea ride over the hills and towards the river until you reach a quiet shaded trout farm, where you will have lunch. After lunch you will return on a different path, riding a serpentine through apple orchards and shady and lush vegetable gardens back to Ortahisar. Overnight in hotel, dinner in Ortahisar. (5 hours riding)

Day 6

From Ortahisar you enjoy a wonderful last day of riding through the Red and Rose Valleys . Either ride along the fertile valley floor with its many vineyards and hidden cave churches, or take the mountain path and ride with vast panoramic views of these magnificent valleys all around you. Ride past the town Cavusin and then enjoy an exhilarating canter across the open steppe until you reach the stables in Avanos. Farewell dinner at the ranch. Overnight in Ortahisar. (4-5 hours riding)

We just completed the Wine and Beaches of Bordeaux tour and Michel and Beatrice provided us with the most amazing experiences- the horses, the chateaus, the food, the wine...every day was better than the one before and we were truly heartbroken to have to leave. What a wonderful experience and we are already looking into doing the tour of the Dourgne next year. Absolutely incredible trip!

I had a once-in-a-lifetime experience riding at Epona Equestrian Center in Spain. What a beautiful landscape, lovely horses, and wonderful (patient) trainers. The hotel accommodations in Carmona are casual-elegant. It was worth paying a small extra charge to reserve a room overlooking the valley. I highly recommend this adventure!

I took my second Equitour trip earlier this year, this time to New Zealand (first time was to Ecuador). Bev and Rod were absolutely lovely hosts and my husband and I still talk about how nice it was to stay, ride and golf with them. The horses were wonderful and I had the most exquisite ride on Alex, who was easygoing and more than happy to stomp in the waves and gallop on the beautiful, empty beach as long as I wanted. Plus Bev and Rod have an amazing farm, hundreds of sheep (great for pics) and at the time, two puppies that I was more than happy to run around with. Do this ride.
