Overview

Short Description

Explore Myanmar’s highlights in an exciting tour. After discovering Yangon we will move to Bagan surrounded by inspiring plains. Continue to Mandalay to see incredible monuments and visit ancient capitals. Discover the Mingun bell which is the largest bell in the world and in the end you get astonished by the leg rowers and delightful floating gardens of Inle Lake.

Private tours give you the undivided attention of a guide, and often involve special access to sites and unique experiences not available to larger groups. This is a great option for families, couples, and small friend groups. Expect to pay a bit more for the extra service.

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Mingalabar and welcome to Myanmar! The former capital Yangon, also known as Rangoon, remains Myanmar largest city and continues to be the country's commercial hub and gateway for most of its international visitors. Upon arrival at the airport you will be greeted and transferred to your hotel for check-in. Begin your sightseeing of Myanmar with a visit of the 70-metre reclining Buddha at Kyaukhtatgyi Pagoda. After marveling at the grandeur of this site, head on to a local tea shop for a truly local experience. Resume your sightseeing with a visit to the gleaming royal barge at Kandawgyi Park. Then, as the sun begins to set, travel to the resplendent Shwedagon Pagoda. After sunset, head on to Chinatown for a change of scenery and check out the dragons and incense of the colourful Khen Hock Keong Chinese temple. Lunch and Dinner on own account.
  • Day 2: After breakfast, you will be transferred (without guide) to the airport for your domestic flight to Bagan. Bagan is one of Asia's most impressive sites, with more than 4000 religious monuments built between the 9th and 14th century. Upon landing, we'll start exploring the temples, villages and riverside of Bagan.  Traveling amid the temples you will get a taste of rural Bagan life in this ‘living museum’ setting, where farmers and families work amongst the monuments. In the afternoon, continue your journey by horse cart for an excursion that passes Thatbyinnyu, the tallest temple in Bagan, gigantic Dhammayangyi Temple noted for its remarkable brickwork, and Sulamani Temple. The day comes to a close while watching the sunset from the upper terrace of one of the elevated temples. Lunch and dinner on own account.
  • Day 3: Continue your exploration of Myanmar with a morning flight to Mandalay. Upon your arrival, you’ll be transferred to Mandalay city. Your orientation tour of Mandalay begins with a visit to Mandalay Hill, rising 787 feet above the city. Directly south of Mandalay Hill stands the Kyauktawgyi Pagoda with a giant Buddha carved from one marble block. Then proceed to Kuthodaw Pagoda, known as 'The World’s Biggest Book' for its collection of 729 marble slabs inscribed with Buddhist teachings. Our final stop of the morning is Shwenandaw Monastery. Take a break at midday and proceed to your hotel to check in. In the afternoon, continue your guided tour with a visit to the Mahamuni Pagoda.  There are also many craft workshops in Mandalay and, should you wish, we can stop for a visit to one making gold leaf, tapestries, wood carvings or marionettes. Next drive to Amarapura, Myanmar’s penultimate royal capital. Visit Mahagandayon monastery and continue on foot or by bus to U Bein Bridge. Enjoy the late afternoon beauty as the sun casts long shadows and illuminates the bridge. As a stunning day comes to an end, head back to Mandalay. Lunch and dinner on own account.
  • Day 4: The day will begin with a visit to Mandalay’s vibrant morning market. You’ll be amazed by the colours and sounds as deals are made.  Then, continue across the Irrawaddy River to Sagaing, the Buddhist centre of Myanmar. You’ll visit some of the most famous pagodas and enjoy spectacular views from the top of Sagaing Hill before returning down to the small town for lunch. Drive north, on a scenic drive parallel to the Irrawaddy River, to Mingun. Visit the massive Mingun Paya, which was intended to be the world's largest religious monument, yet construction was halted when a fortune-teller predicted the King’s death upon completion. Carry on to the gorgeous alabaster Hsinbyume Pagoda, an unusual stupa built to resemble Mount Meru, the mythological mountain that stands at the centre of the universe. Your final stop will be at Mingun Bell, the world's largest 'uncracked bell', which weighs 90 tons. You can also visit some of the many Mingun craftsmen selling items such as hand-woven baskets, watercolour painters and other vendors. A relaxing boat journey will take you back across the Irrawaddy River to Mandalay city. Lunch and dinner on own account.
  • Day 5: Transfer to the airport for your domestic morning flight to Heho. From Heho, it is a scenic one-hour drive (32km – 1 hour) to Nyaung Shwe, gateway village to Inle Lake. Then you will board a private motorboat and go to Inle Lake, one of Myanmar’s most spectacular and breathtaking sights. Its calm waters are dotted with floating vegetation and fishing canoes, to which scenic hills provide the perfect backdrop.  Observe the daily activities of the local leg-rowing fishermen and see their ‘floating gardens’, which are built up from strips of water hyacinth, earth and anchored to the bottom of the lake with bamboo poles. You will also visit Nga Hpe Chaung Monastery, which houses loads of early Shan Buddha Images. Finally, proceed to the Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda, which contains five sacred images of Buddha decorated in gold leaf. There are also many traditional crafts originating on Inle Lake and, should you wish, we can stop for a visit to one making incredible woven items from lotus silk, boat builders (depending on the time of year), a cigar making workshop, blacksmiths or even silver smiths. Lunch and dinner on own account.
  • Day 6: Today begins with a visit to the lake’s morning market (the market is open every day apart from dark moon and full moon calendar days).  Continue with a 1 hour boat ride down a small canal, which will take you to the Pa-Oh village of Indein, positioned on the western shores of Inle Lake. Take a leisurely stroll around the village before ascending the moss-covered stairway to the top of a hill. Once you’ve arrived at the summit, you will be greeted by an iconic Buddha image which sits enshrined among hundreds of stupa ruins and overgrown shrubbery. Then it’s time to embark on a 45 minutes trek to Sae Ma village. Along the way, you’ll enjoy the natural beauty and panoramic vistas of the area while basking under the shade of the bamboo grooves. Upon arrival at the village, observe the daily lifestyles of the rural inhabitants. Should time allow, you'll stop at Intha Heritage House to learn more about the history and culture of the lake's indigenous people. The day will come to a close with a return trip by boat back to your hotel. Lunch and dinner on own account.
  • Day 7: Return to Yangon with a flight from Heho airport (32km – 1 hour by land plus 30-60 minutes by boat). A private car will be waiting for you and will be at your disposal for the rest of the day till the departure at the international airport.  In Yangon, the car and guide will be at your disposal until departure flight time.

Our guide tried to skip almost all of the things on our itinerary and we had to fight with him to get him to do half of the things we paid for! He hated his job, didn't do any of the guide portion and really ruined our trip to Sri Lanka. Overall, this company was terrible to deal with and didn't care about what their guide did! We didn't get what we paid for at all. Stay away from them!

Unclear value proposition

As a number of reviewers have noted, booking a trip through Evanoes is more expensive than booking it yourself. I justified this premium based on the fact that they provide a service - Evanoes, through their partner agent, will create a tailor-made holiday for me, so I didn't have to spend the time doing the research.

Unfortunately, this is not the case. I just completed a two week trip to the Philippines. While it was well organized, almost all the hotels that I was booked into (and hotels is of course where the majority of a holiday spend tends to go to) were exactly the opposite of the brief I had provided. In fact, one was so different to what I had requested (not to mention more expensive) that I checked out within two hours of arriving, to a cheaper, better located hotel that met my requirements at an additional cost. When I contacted both the agent and Evanoes about this, they noted that it was my responsibility to check their recommendations. If this is the case, and customers are responsible for doing all the research to ensure that the local agents recommendations meet their requirements, I'm really not sure what the point of paying Evanoes and their local agent is. I could have just done all the bookings myself, paying much less!
