Short Description

The small village of Villabassa, just north of Cortina d'Ampezzo, is the perfect base for this Dolomites walking holiday nestled close to the Austrian border and sandwiched between the spectacular, jagged limestone peaks. From here we enjoy an excellent choice of routes with the opportunity to relax in comfort at the end of a day's walking. During the week, we venture into the Fanes-Sennes and Dolomiti di Sesto National Parks for great views of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Historically the front line between Italy and Austria-Hungary during the First World War, the trails take us through incredible open-air museums.Superb walking in Italy's most spectacular mountain range

Small groups are usually defined as between 10 and 24 travelers, often less. If you're the kind of person who enjoys more intimate experiences and personal service this is a good choice. All else being equal you will pay a premium for this style vs a larger group tour.

Flight Inclusive

Day 1 Fly to Venice; transfer to Villabassa.

Fly to Venice; transfer to Villabassa. **

Day 2 Walk to the beautiful Lago di Braies (level 3 weeks)

The ideal start to visiting this vast area is a walk straight from the hotel through the very pretty, flower-filled Braies Valley. We walk through small villages and farmland until we reach the magnificent Lago di Braies, one of the 297 glacial lakes in the area. It is certainly one of the most beautiful thanks to being surrounded by jagged peaks that are reflected in the extraordinary mirror-like surface of the lake. We follow the route of 'SS hostages', the leaders of 19 countries who were freed after the First World War by the inhabitants of Villabassa. Approx. distance 14km, 650m ascent, 255m descent.

Day 3 Walk from the Kreutzberg Pass to the Nemes Alm (level 3 weeks)

Today we explore high pastures and ridges along the Austrian border. We walk steadily exploring the meadows under the ridge of Knieberg. We have great views towards the Rotwand and Monte Popera. Later afternoon we visit Alpe Nemes hut where we could enjoy a drink and a home made apple strudel. Approx distance 14-16km. 6-700m ascent, 6-700m descent.

Day 4 Walk amongst beautiful wildflowers during the climb up towards Strudelkopf (level 3 weeks)

We start the walk at 2000m altitude walking amongst beautiful wildflowers and ascends to the summit of Strudlekopf (2307m). We stop at the Durrenstein hut in the early afternoon to check the local Kaiserschmarren speciality. On a clear day, from the summit, we can enjoy views of the Tre Cime, Monte Piana and Monte Cristallo. Approx. distance 15km. 500m ascent, 1000m descent.

Day 5 A free day to relax or enjoy optional activities such as self-guided cycling or visit one of the local museums.

A free day to relax in the hotel's wellness centre or take a self-guided cycle ride around this wonderful area. Alternatively, you can make your way to Bolzano to visit a museum dedicated to Oetzi, the 5000 year-old 'iceman' whose remarkably well-preserved body was found in 1991 high on a glacier on the Austro-Italian frontier. Or you could journey to the attractive provincial capital of Lienz in Austria; or closer to the cosy town of Bunick.

Day 6 A memorable circuit around the famous 'three chimneys', Tre Cime di Lavaredo (level 3 weeks)

We enjoy a memorable walk under the famous 'Three Chimneys', or Tre Cime di Lavaredo (or Drei Zinnen in German). Set amid one of the classic mountain groups of this area, our walk around these impressive peaks is certainly a highlight of the week. Approx distance 18km, 550m ascent, 1100 descent.

Day 7 Monte Piano (level 3 weeks)

To complete the week, we take the amazing estern approach route up Monte Piana. After 600m ascent we find ourselves upon the flat-topped mountain surrounded by some of the most impressive scenery in the Dolomites. It is the site of an open-air museum dedicated to the First World War where trenches, dugouts and shell craters can be seen amongst the many alpine flowers. On our return, we have time to spot the brilliant blue gentians, alpine white edelweiss and bright saffron that create a beautiful scene around Lake Misurina, thanks to the beautiful pink of the limestone rock. Approx distance 15km, 700m ascent, 800m descent.

A week of exciting walking in the Dolomite mountains, technically in Italy
but very much Austrian in character. Villabassa/Niederdorf was an excellent
base to explore the South Tyrol.

Check out my 2-minute video of the trip:

The 700m ascent to the summit of Monte Piano was tough but exhilarating. Our
reward was spectacular views of the surrounding peaks and a unique insight
into the WW1 fortifications.

Alex was excellent, quietly getting on with leading the group. He is very
knowledgeable about the local area. He also taught us the best way to use
our poles and imparted other very useful tips on negotiating the mountains.

Walking poles were very useful as some of the terrain is quite rocky.

The hotel facilities, especially the pool, were excellent. The dining staff
were very accommodating and did their best to meet all needs. The breakfast
was delicioust and the DIY packed lunch was an excellent idea, there was so
much choice.

An excellent week of good weather, good walking, excellent guiding and
excellent company.
Getting to the summit of Monte Piana and exploring all the WW1 trenches and
battlefields

Alex was an excellent leader. Friendly, knowledgeable and inspiring. The
whole trip went like clockwork.

It's worth getting a bit fit before you go so that you can enjoy the walks
without too much struggle. There were some steep ascents and descents to
tackle.

Late June was a brilliant time to go to the Dolomites. We had variable
weather, but plenty of sun to admire the spectacular mountains. This was my
first "walking holiday", and exactly what I hoped it would be. The main draw
was the mountain scenery, but I also enjoyed the hotel and its food service,
which offered plenty of variety.

There were 16 in our group, which meant the supper service dragged on quite
long, but everyone was friendly and completed all the hikes.
360 degree views of Dolomites, Alps and valleys on our Tuesday hike. I
didn't bother myself with the names of peaks, so I can't name the place, but
it was the most scenic spot I've ever been.

Our guide bailed after day 1 due to a family emergency. He was good while he
lasted, though. We had 3 other guides during the week, 2 who were little
more than wayfinders, 1 who was excellent in his knowledge of the area, his
command of English and his thoughtful presentation of the complicated
cultural issues of the region.

It seemed that the hotel proprietor helped Exodus with the scramble to find
replacement guides. It all went very well, with no negative impact to our
week. Excellent job to cover the unexpected departure.

For the travel days, arriving and departing, count on doing nothing besides
reaching your destination. The location is remote. I planned a second week
in Como, so my airport was Milan Malpensa. Reaching Villabassa required 4
trains, one of which was late and another was canceled (replaced by a bus,
fortunately). Trains are frequent enough to be a good option, but taking the
Exodus transfer from Venice would have made life simpler.

Also, plan to do some laundry by hand, daily. There were no laundromats
anywhere in the valley.

I was thrilled to have my own hotel room. Actually, I had inquired about
paying the single supplement, but was told it was unavailable for the dates.
Sharing the very small room for a week would have been quite cramped. It
appeared several of us had individual rooms. Much appreciated, but a
surprise.

The Dolomites, are stunning, at every step was a new spectacular view. The
walking was challenging and rewarding. Hotel Adler was fabulous the
hospitality absolutely splendid.
Its difficult to pick a highlight as everyday was fabulous in it's own way.

Alex is a true professional, lovely person and our thoughts are with him
through a very difficult time.
Christian from the Adler was wonderful and kept the feeling of group exodus
holiday together.
The guides that stood in on Alex's behalf all brought something different to
the 'table' and the group remained in high spirits.

Always look around you and not just at the steps you are taking.
Take only photo's and leave only footprints

I would have liked to have been spoken to by an Exodus rep. during the week
in person ( to the whole group), I understand the logistics of this may have
been rather tricky. As already stated Christian, family and staff did an
awesome job. We would definitely book again with Exodus

The walks were well chosen, giving us a good mix of the mountain ascents and
panoramic views. I believe the leader provided good guidance on the walks
however the largeness of the group and variable fitness of group members
meant there were challenges for the leader keeping to the necessary timetable
to meet connecting bus transfers etc.
While generally the hotel was of a good standard, the formal set menus had
restrictive choice and often had too many courses (up to 5). White table
cloths and waiting staff in dinner suits seemed far too formal for a walking
tour. Also waiting staff were run off their feet and worked extraordinaryly
long hours. The evening where we ordered our meals provided the best meal of
the stay. That said, every effort was made by staff to serve us as best they
could.
I also wish to highly commend the hotel staff for assisting with resolving a
medical problem my partner suffered from in the early part of the week.
The ascent of Monte Piano, the panoramic views and the exploration of the WWI
fortifications.

Alex was a competent group leader who was helpful, had a good sense of humour
and managed a large group with variable levels of fitness with diplomacy.

This walk requires a reasonable standard of fitness and potential walkers
should not unduly focus on the comforts available at the end of each walking
day. While the walks were quite demanding achieving the views were very
rewarding.

Perhaps there should have been an earlier group introduction at the airport -
we waited for quite some time while various flights, some delayed, arrived.

This was one of the best walking trips I have ever been on. This was the
opinion of all on our trip and many were highly experienced walkers who had
traveled the world. In terms of location it is hard to beat. Combine the
stunning scenery on each walk with the excellent hotel, food, wines and
facilities and this makes for a first class week.
The walks and subsequent views were the inspiration. This trip was not about
climbing to one summit, seeing one view. It was a variety of circuits and
routes all with constant 360 degree stunning views, the surrounding snow
capped mountains, the varying colours of the rocks as the sun moved across
them all made this one of the most memorable walking trips ever. Sitting on
hillsides enjoying such a panorama when stopping for leisurely lunch was as
perfect a holiday escape as you could wish.

Alex was excellent. Extremely knowledgeable, always put group safety first,
and was available to help and answer questions. He clearly had a love of the
area, not just the scenery but the history and highlighted this when he
could. It gave an added dimension to each place. He was friendly, attentive
but also allowed the group as much as possible to walk at their own pace, and
kept it all vert relaxed and enjoyable. An idea group leader.

If you like walking holidays this has some of the best routes and scenery you
could wish for. I would highly recommend anyone considering this trip to
book. The Premium departure is worth it for the hotel and excellent food.
