Short Description

Set among the inland valleys of the Costa Blanca, the region known as 'Las Marinas', is one to discover and savour. Still relatively unknown, this pristine area enchants visitors with its peaceful, rural lifestyle. Walkers are treated to a variety of mountain climates; from summit views above 1400m in the morning to tropical avocado and citrus plantations in the afternoon. In spring, wildflowers carpet the mountainside, and from late February to early April the sweet scent of almond blossom fills the air.Enjoy self-guided walking through rugged Spanish mountain landscapes

Land Only

Day 1 Start Aitana Natural Guesthouse

Arrive at Alicante airport and join a transfer to take you to Aitana Natural Guesthouse (approx. 1 hour). After you have settled in you will be briefed on the week's walks by the local operator who has lived and worked in these mountains for the majority of his life - so should be able to answer any questions that you may have about the area. You will be provided with comprehensive route notes and a map, along with a GPS device and a smartphone, and instructed on how best to use these.

Day 2 Follow the ancient paths from Sella to Relleu; walk back, or take the local bus

After a short transfer, today’s walk starts off relatively easy using the ancient network of paths that connected Sella and Relleu in the past. You will walk through almond fields, green orchards and old pastures to get to the town of Relleu, which has a very picturesque setting in the middle of a valley surrounded by mountains. You can choose to walk back, or take the bus (payable locally).

Day 3 Short bus transfer; ascend Sierra de Orcheta from the Amadorio water dam

After a short bus transfer to the small town of Orcheta, you begin your ascent of Sierra de Orcheta from the Amadorio water dam. You are rewarded with views over the extensive citrus fields of Marina Baixa, with Monte Castellets and Aitana in the background.

Day 4 Ascend through Passet de la Rabosa to reach Aitana peak (1558m)

After a transfer to the start point at Port de Tudons (10 mins), begin your walk at the old military base up the northern slopes of Aitana. You start on good tracks to the Font del Arbre, and reach the footpath up to the Font de Partagat, and then a scramble through the Passet de la Rabosa. There is a perfect picnic spot at the Simas limestone features, which are up to 90m deep and situated on a ridge near the summit of Aitana. Depending on the weather a climb to the summit (1558m) is possible; the descent to Font Pouet Alemany in Tagarina is possibly the most scenic and dramatic of the whole trek!

Day 5 Circular walk following the ancient snow trading trails towards the coast and passing through Collado Papatxi

Today you transfer to Font del Arc and follow a circular route using the ancient snow trading trails towards the coast, passing through Collado Papatxi. The spectacular limestone peaks and needles of Penya Roc, and enchanting light of the spine of the jagged Castellets Ridge really make this a walk to remember.

Day 6 Free day

Enjoy a day off from walking and relax by the pool, or take a guided visit to the local chocolate factory! Alternatively take the bus or train to Villajoyosa or Alicante and take a gourmet tapas tour, or spend the day relaxing at the beach.

Day 7 Summit Puig Campana (1401m) for beautifully panoramic views across the Costa Blanca region

A fairly tough walk to complete the week - the summit of the Puig Campana (1,410m) with 360º panoramic views! Almost all of the peaks and ridges traversed on the previous days may be seen. On the other side the Mediterranean stretches to the horizon. You approach the north face of this mountain along good trails and paths, embarking on a gentle climb passing the Collao del Llamp to the Collao Pouet, the actual base of the mountain. From here, you climb a new footpath on the north face of this spectacular peak and return by vehicle to Sella.

Day 8 End Aitana Natural Guesthouse

End Aitana Natural Guesthouse; transfer back to Alicante airport.

Self-Guided Walking in the Sierra de Aitana

Write a Review

Sierra de Aitana - self guided walking

This was our first self-guided Exodus trip. We opted for it as we wanted
flexibility for a moderate/ challenging trip as our first walk of the year.
The variety of trails and ability to flex their order and the free day were
helpful too. We did the five walks in the order listed but choose to take our
free day at the end; partly weather-related and to enjoy a relaxing day
before travelling.
The area is compact, so you build up views of where you've walked as the days
go by. The limestone scenery is impressive and offers great views to the
coast. Sometimes the route is not obvious but the combination of GPS
/map/waymarks means you are unlikely to go far off track.
On balance, because of the perfect weather, the Passet de Rabosa to Aitana
peak day, with its impressive limestone features.
The Puig Campana summit is also very rewarding.

The time of year also made it a joy with almond trees, and depending on
elevation, rosemary, gorse and other wildlife flowers in bloom along the

As this was a self-guided trip, we were supported by the technical leader
(also the leader for the Aitana guided walk trip) and we saw him at start and
end of the week.
Day to day, our leader was Natxo our host at the Aitana guesthouse, who drove
us to walk starts, provided lots of local knowledge as we travelled and
picked us up at the end of the day. He also made sure the 'guesthouse' - an
unusual and beautiful property high in the hills and surrounded by pine
forest - was always warm for our return with a big log fire.
Together with Cecilia, his partner, we also enjoyed some great meals (both
meat and vegetarian equally good)

We used the GPS tracker, but found the maps provided very helpful in knowing
where on the route we were and the terrain type.
Whilst you're tracked on route, if you've not done independent walking
before, you may find it worthwhile before travelling, to test out navigation
aids offered on this trip on trails you know.

It was a surprise to find such great walking only a short distance from the
coast. We would recommend this to anyone who enjoys independent walking.

Blissful escapism

Beautiful walking in the Sierra de Aitina. This is really a hidden gem of an
area. It is incredibly scenic area and the walking is interesting and varied
and the length of the walks are about right I’d say.

The accommodation is in the most truly stunning setting. To have exclusivity
of such a place was a real treat. We were looked after incredibly well. The
service and value for money for this trip is excellent.
Aitina Natural guesthouse and it’s owner Natxo, one of the nicest people I
have ever met whilst travelling. Exodus are lucky to have him!
The accommodation is in such a beautiful setting. It really is true escapism.
We were looked after so well. Nothing was too much trouble. We were served a
three course meal every evening and the food was amazing including the packed

Self guided so not really applicable, but the owner of the guesthouse managed
everything we needed perfectly.

We felt this trip gave us fantastic walking in a beautiful place and the
accommodation and food was superb.
This is an unknown area so there aren’t lots of people but it is truly a
scenic area. The almond blossom was spectacular and we were lucky to be there
when it was in full bloom.
Just very simply a W onderful holiday. Can’t commend this holiday enough.

Self Guided Walking in Sierra De Aitana

For us the self guided option was the best. It allowed us to take as much
time as we wanted to explore the routes and to linger as long as we liked
enjoying the scenery.
We were not confined by group dynamics and though it was just the two of us
we really enjoyed being on our own.
Our accommodation the Aitana Natural Guesthouse, we were the first guests,
was just excellent.
Not for everybody that there was no mobile signal or WiFi but that is just
what we wanted.
We were 'off the grid' and the hot water and electricity were provided by the
Cecillia (Ceci) and Natxo (pronounced Natcho) were wonderful hosts who cooked
absolutely beautiful food and kept the house tidy but in general we were left

This was hiking at home with the weather!
All the walks were inspiring but climbing Puig Campana to get the 360 view of
the Sierra De Aitana countryside for me was the highlight.

While we didn't have a leader Jose Miguel from Aitana Aventura was absolutely
excellent. He provided us with maps, a walks description handbook, a GPS and
a handset with the App Alpify loaded on it.
Alpify allowed Jose Miguel to follow our progress remotely. This was very
comforting just know that you are not alone, especially in new territory in a
foreign country.
Just what we wanted.

You can find Aitana Natural - Guesthouse on facebook look them up you'll be
Bring your own reading materials and enjoy sitting in or out reading, or
doing crosswords or suduko or whatever takes your fancy. You're at least 4km
from Sella but Natxo
All the routes are well trodden and pretty well all marked. The GPS can be
slightly off the exact trail but stick to your paths and you will be fine.

Thank you to Jose Miguel, Ceci and Natxo for making a good week really great!

Company Reviews

I was introduced to Antarctica in the most amazing way. When we arrived there
was a blanket of heavy fog the team got us on the zodiac and navigated on
compass bearings. Suddenly like the curtain of a stage being pulled back we
sat in sky of blue surrounded by a wild and pristine environment.
See above. Watching whales breech. Smelling penguins before you could see
them. Filming Leopard seals with my gopro. You truely need to be awake 24hrs
a day and have eyes in the back of your head for this trip.

Shelly and the team were amazing. Their passion and commitment and tirless
effort to show what they love and care about the most was amazing

Do take European travel plugs for Ushuaia as well as American.

Enjoy everything this trip has to offer. Remember this is an expedition and
not a five star hotel as some travellers on my trip thought. Things can go
wrong and weather is unpredictable. A real once in a lifetime trip.

Another fantastic trip to the wilderness that is Antarctica. Brilliant from
start to finish with awesome scenery and wildlife experiences throughout on a
fantastic ship.
Experiencing the beauty of both Oraca's and Humpback whales upclose to to
zodiacs and a brillient night spent camping on the Ice of Antartctica.

Woody was excellent from start to finish, extremely knowledgeable and
passionate about Antarctica, friendly, open and worked brilliantly with
the Ships Captain/Crew to get us lots of fantastic landings and cruising
opportunities. He was ably assisted by the rest of his expedition crew who
were all also fantastic.

Go... A definite must do atleast once in your life. Antarctica is awesome.

Although some people might conside this type of trip as being expensive,
I'd qualify it by saying this was my second trip to Antarctica and
althought it is not a cheap holiday it is great value for money, I
wouldn't have returned otherwise. The Ship is fantastic, food was
excellent and all the crew were so friendly, helpful and ofcourse

A holiday that exceeded all expectations. Stunning scenery, abundant
wildlife, a great team and a superb boat and crew
Seeing that being a penguin parent is true dedication!

"Blessed are the flexible for they shall not be bent out of
shape....." A quote from a member of the group that sums up Woody.
Excellent does also.

Book it NOW!

I knew we'd see a lot of wildlife and had hoped I'd see an albatross
- there were 6 gliding around the boat on the first day! The excesses just
got greater each dayafter that!
