A couple of days ago I left my first ever cruise in lisbon but firstly I,ll like to give a bit of my history, I,m a 61 year old merchant navy Capt. (Cargo ships) I was talked into taking a cruise by my family (busmans holiday) after a bit of skeptical consideration from my part it was decided to go for a short taster, we decided on the 3 day southampton to Lisbon cruise aboard "Braemar" we made our way to Southampton full of pre embarkation excitement and got to the terminal and were guided thru the process by very helpfull and polite dock staff we then got onboard and at this stage I began to feel how smooth calm and profesional this was all turning out to be.
We are now onboard making our way to our cabin and the friendliness of everyone especially crew we met was quite astounding because I felt the friendliness was real and not just air hostess type smiles and greets, also another thing I couldn't help noticing was the new carpeting throughout the ship (immaculate) but anyway I,ll try and shorten this reveiw as I feel I,m starting to waffle on..
Apart from further praising the crew onboard the food, well in all my years I have never tasted or seen better and believe you me I've been around and done some mileage, we also participated in the formal night and prior to dining the Capt and heads of departments were present in Neptune lounge to toast and greet us passengers, The Capt did an excellent unscripted speech and introduced all heads of departments in such a friendly and warm Manner which was to be admired as he is a seaman and not an actor or presenter but carried it out superbly and so at ease and made us passengers feel so welcome (and Happy) and also part of the family, (well done Capt Glavic).
To cut a long story short I definitely recommend "Braemar" and Fred olsens staff also deserve a mention on how easy they seem to carry out the whole operation in a pleasant and swift way. Oh and another thing,I didnt see or hear any screaming noisy kids onboard ! Its not that I dont like kids because I even used to go to school with them (sometimes)..anyway we are definitely going to book again with Freds.
Well done All.
Peter.

We have done several Fred Olsen cruises and love them. The staff are always friendly and remember your name and your preferred drink. The food is fabulous and such a wide choice you can always find something you like. The ships are a nice, friendly size and if you meet someone one day, it is easy to see them again and chat, unlike the great big ships with thousands of people on board. Having said that, if you prefer to be on your own, it's easy to find a quiet area to sit. We have four more cruises booked with FO and can't wait

Waiting to board Balmoral at Southampton. Time to arrive at port was 18:00. Ship late arriving by 1.5 hours.
Still waiting to board at 20:40. And expect at least another 20 minutes. Everyone fed up and tired !!
Even when on-board, have to find cabin, then lifeboat drill. Don't know about evening meal ... might miss it and have two breakfasts. Let's hope the cruise goes well.

We were on the black watch to St Petersburg . This was our first cruise and cruise line was recommended. On arrival first impressions were ship could do with a refit as everything very shabby . The cabin was poorly appointed and also shabby. TV limited to two channels rerunning films constantly when it worked. wifi outrageous and took ages to connect, if at all, £34 for 90 minutes. . The food was repetitive and like school dinners. The allocated late sitting for meal was non negotiable and we had to compete with other guests at the next door buffet each night.. please note all Hi season cruises seem to attract a very elderly infirm population which is to be avoided if not in that age group.
If this had been a hotel we would have left after an hour but cruise was very expensive and always felt things would improve. They didn't! . never never never again..

Additional Information:

Please Note

Polar exploration can be unpredictable, which regularly causes variations to our itineraries. Specific sites visited will depend on prevailing weather and ice conditions at the time of sailing. The above itinerary should be read as a 'guide only' and may change. The ship's Captain in conjunction with the Expedition Leader continually review the sailing plan throughout the voyage, making adjustments to the itinerary along the way to take advantage of optimal weather and ice conditions or to maximize our encounters with wildlife. Decades of experience spent exploring these waterways mean we have a large number of outstanding landing sites and zodiac cruising locations to consider, even when the weather conditions may not be ideal or when heavy ice may block out a planned route. A flexible approach is something we encourage you to bring to the ship.
