Short Description

Decades after the fall of communism, the Baltic countries of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia remain a mystery to most travellers. We’re not complaining, though; more mystery means fewer crowds and an easier time getting to know these fantastic countries. Beginning in charming cobblestoned Vilnius and ending in beautiful Helsinki, this two-week trip gets to the very heart of the region. Get an up-close glimpse of Riga’s castles and art district, experience rural life in Estonia, and venture into the fortresses and medieval architecture of Tallinn before crossing to Finland by ferry. Make the Baltics your special travel secret.

Small groups are usually defined as between 10 and 24 travelers, often less. If you're the kind of person who enjoys more intimate experiences and personal service this is a good choice. All else being equal you will pay a premium for this style vs a larger group tour.

Itinerary

Day 1 Vilnius

We recommend arriving a day or two early to fully explore this charming city. There are no planned activities until an evening welcome meeting. Included Activities: Meet Your CEO and Group

Day 2 Vilnius (1B)

Spend free time walking through charming old town or searching out artist havens and modern statues. Multi-faceted, puzzling, a heady mix of old and new, Vilnius has all the glories of a royal past, the troubling reminders of wartime and Communist atrocities and a vibrant forward-looking outlook. Included Activities: Trakai Castle Visit Transport: Local bus (0.75 hour(s))

Day 3 Vilnius/Nida (1B)

The Curonian Spit is a long, thin sand dune that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea. This spit is shared by Lithuania and Kalingrad, Russia's westernmost oblast. The forested hills used to be the site of dancing and gathering during Pagan festivals. Now, the hills are dotted with wooden statues created by local artists, depicting witches, dragons, and the elements. Some of the statues tell stories of the local legends and folklore, bringing the region to life with their intricate carvings. Transport: Local bus (6.00 hour(s))

Day 4 Nida (1B)

Enjoy an included bicycle tour around the Hill of Witches and a visit to sea bird colonies. Included Activities: Hill of Witches Bicycle Tour

Day 5 Nida/Riga (1B)

Explore the narrow streets on foot and get better acquainted with the city known as "the Paris of the East". Opt to visit St Peter's Church, where we ascend the spire by lift, for a fantastic view over the city. Transport: Change buses in Klaipeda. Local bus (7.00 hour(s))

Day 6 Riga (1B, 1L)

Enjoy a guided tour and a lunch of treats from the Central Market. Spend a free afternoon exploring the city. Included Activities: Riga Guided Tour

Day 7 Riga/Kuressaare (1B, 1D)

Saaremaa is a remote island in the Baltic Sea with unique traditions and heritage. Thatched roof houses, stone walls, and windmills make up this fairytale landscape. Enjoy three nights on a farm outside the main city of Kuressaare. Transport: Local bus (2.50-3.00 hours) Boat (2.50-3.00 hours)

Day 8 Kuressaare (1B, 1D)

Enjoy a tour of Saaremaa including a visit to the Kaali meteorite lake, bakeries, and windmills. Opt to visit the local breweries. Included Activities: Saaremaa Guided Tour

Day 9 Kuressaare (1B, 1D)

Enjoy a free day to explore. Opt to visit some of the ancient churches or natural sites like the lake, the Panga Cliff, and the Pühatu Springs.

Day 10 Kuressaare/Tallinn (1B)

Travel to Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. Fall in love with this medieval town. Enjoy an included visit to Kadriorg Palace. Included Activities: Kadriorg Palace Visit Transport: Private Vehicle (4.00 hour(s))

Day 11 Tallinn (1B)

Spend a free day exploring this medieval city. Use your free time to visit the Museum of the Occupation, the Dome Church, the open air museum, go sea kayaking, visit the beaches, or relax in a sauna.

Day 12 Tallinn/Helsinki (1B)

Travel by ferry to the charming capital city of Helsinki. Enjoy an afternoon in the Scandinavian city with an orientation walk and free time. Included Activities: Orientation Walk Transport: Ferry (2.00-2.50 hours)

Day 13 Helsinki (1B)

Depart at any time. Included Activities: Departure Day

Holey Dooley I Loved it. The baltics have their own special attraction and i think people will either love it or unfortunately hate it for want of a slightly less harsh word. Its very diverse and something different from the normal european destinations. Maybe time for a second version more adventure based-

Group Size:

Solo Notes

We believe single travellers should not have to pay more to travel so our group trips are designed for shared accommodation and do not involve a single supplement. Single travellers joining group trips are paired in twin or multi-share accommodation with someone of the same sex for the duration of the trip. Some of our Independent trips are designed differently and single travellers on these itineraries must pay the single trip price.

Accomodations

Hotels (9 nts), farm stay (3 nts).

Note that most accommodation in Europe does not have air conditioning units in rooms. Air conditioning is not routinely installed in European homes and workplaces. However, nearly all hotels will provide a standing or desk fan for your room on hot nights. If you do not already have one in your room, please ask your CEO to organize one for you with reception.

Guides

Chief Experience Officer (CEO) throughout, local guides.

Age Notes

Min. Age: You must be 18 to travel unaccompanied on a G Adventures tour. For minors travelling with a guardian over 21 years old, the minimum age is 12.

Rules & Other Requirements

Illegal drugs will not be tolerated on any trips. Possessing or using drugs not only contravenes the laws of the land but also puts the rest of the group at risk. Smoking marijuana and opium is a part of local culture in some parts of the world but is not acceptable for our travellers. Our philosophy of travel is one of respect towards everyone we encounter, and in particular the local people who make the world the special place it is. The exploitation of prostitutes is completely contrary to this philosophy. Our CEO has the right to expel any member of the group if drugs are found in their possession or if they use prostitutes.
