  • Explore the misty cloud forest

Short Description

Stay flexible in Costa Rica on this unique two-week adventure. You'll hit the volcanoes, a cloud forest, and both of the incredible coasts. Chill out on white-sand beaches and explore pristine wildlife reserves. Best of all, this trip gives you the flexibility to create the adventure of a lifetime, so you can soar across the treetops by zipline, rappel down a waterfall, or learn to surf the Pacific breaks. Take a trip that's packed with just the essentials — everything you need to explore the diversity and beauty of Costa Rica.

Small groups are usually defined as between 10 and 24 travelers, often less. If you're the kind of person who enjoys more intimate experiences and personal service this is a good choice. All else being equal you will pay a premium for this style vs a larger group tour.

Days 3-4 Puerto Viejo de Talamanca

Opt to go snorkelling in the Caribbean or hiking in Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge.

Day 5 Puerto Viejo de Talamanca/La Fortuna

We travel north by bus through varied landscapes and arrive at La Fortuna, a small town near the foot of Arenal Volcano. La Fortuna is an excellent base for adventure. Hike the area’s nature trails, swim in chilly La Fortuna waterfall or go canyoneering (rappelling) and catch a bird’s eye view of the forest greenery. Natural hot springs are also in the area and perfect after a day of travel or exploration. Transport: Local bus (3.50-4.00 hours) Private Vehicle (2.50-3.50 hours)

Days 6-7 La Fortuna

Optional activities include full-day whitewater rafting on the Toro or Balsa Rivers, mountain biking, caving, horseback riding, or a tour of the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge. Like much of Costa Rica, the area is a birders’ paradise, with over 600 species as permanent residents. Finally, after a long day of exploring, you can choose to take a relaxing soak at Baldi Hot Springs. Get your adrenaline pumping and pre-book the Costa Rica Adrenaline Bundle on the checkout page to include this optional activity on your tour or ask your GCO or travel agent for assistance.

Day 8 La Fortuna/Monteverde

From the central valley, ascend to the Monteverde cloud forest region. Spend a couple of days exploring the town and a cloud forest reserve, truly a bird lover's paradise. This unique community has several cooperatives worth visiting including artist collectives and a cheese factory. Local guides are extremely knowledgeable about the area and passionate about conservation of this precious ecosystem. Optional activities include a walk along suspension bridges through dense forest, a coffee tour, or an adrenaline-filled zipline above the cloud forest on one of the many famous canopy tours. Included Activities: Life Monteverde Experience Transport: Shared Van (0.50 hour(s)) Boat (0.75 hour(s)) Shared Van (2.00 hour(s))

Days 11-12 Santa Teresa

Fill your days with as much or as little as you like. Check out Cabo Blanco NP to spot some wildlife, hike to the nearby waterfall for a dip or a jump in the local swimming hole or simply lounge on the beach. Take a day trip to the beautiful Isla Tortuga, where you can snorkel along a volcanic rock reef or check out the nearby surf havens of Mal Pais and Santa Teresa. Adrenaline junkies can take their pick of activities as well - ziplining, ATV, boogie boarding, horseback riding or scuba diving are all options. On the other hand, if relaxation is what you seek, opt for a yoga class or take a leisurely hike to search for orchids. Want to learn how to surf in Costa Rica? Pre-book the Santa Teresa Surf Lesson on the checkout page to include this optional activity on your tour or ask your GCO or travel agent for assistance.

Amazing Trip!

Great first time experience in Europe. I got to hike the Alps with a great CEO that was well organised and really friendly. I also met 9 other travellers from across the world and learned a lot while hiking 24 KM Trek's with them. I would recommend this trip to anyone looking to take a break from city life and enjoy the beauty of the Alps.

Great Experience

The tour was amazing. A lot of great hikes and views travelling from France-Italy-Switzerland. Really enjoyed how organised the trip was and down to earth the people were.

A great way to see Japan

Great group tour experience. I was glad that I packed light! It was a small surprise to take so much public transportation everywhere. But our guide was amazing, and we saw a nice combination of classic sights and local gems.

Great way to see Costa Rica

Trek Hidden Costa Rica is a great way to explore the country. I feel like I got so much more out of this trip than I would have on a tour that hits all touristy spots. Very active trip, got to see a lot of wildlife, plus beach/mountains/countryside/waterfalls - so many amazing views! Would highly recommend this trip and will very likely be traveling with GAdventures again.

Trip of a lifetime!

Magnificent mountain peaks, stunning glaciers and picture-perfect lakes. The twelve-person tour was well organized and well paced. Our guide, Romi, was fun and competent. She took good care of us and made sure we had a good time.

Half a dozen local guides joined us along the way, contributing new knowledge and their own perspectives.

Note that there were many more optional activities than were listed on the website, including a day in Bariloche of rafting or horseback riding with gauchos. We also enjoyed a couple of home visits, one featuring a meal prepared in a traditional pot made from a plow disk. And then there was that sweet trip to the dulce de leche tasting shop... So many pleasures, big and small, in an incredibly beautiful land!

My advice: Go a day early so you can take in Buenos Aires’ San Telmo Feria, a ten-block street market that is only held on Sundays.

Group Size:

Small Group - 24 max

Maximum Number of People in Group: 18

Max 18, avg 14.

Solo Notes

We believe single travellers should not have to pay more to travel so our group trips are designed for shared accommodation and do not involve a single supplement. Single travellers joining group trips are paired in twin or multi-share accommodation with someone of the same sex for the duration of the trip. Some of our Independent trips are designed differently and single travellers on these itineraries must pay the single trip price.

Simple hotels (3 nts), hostels (10 nts, multi-share).

Accommodation will be varied throughout your adventure. Some nights we use multi-share accommodation, on a single-sex basis (typically 4-6 people per room). We have specifically chosen unique accommodations to give local flavour to your trip. Couples: Please note that due to the variety of accommodation used in Central America, couples will be split into separate rooms when we use multi-share hostels. Pending availability, couples may be able to pay extra while on tour to have their own room in some destinations.

Important Notes

Costa Rica will not be allowing anyone to enter the country without proof of a departure ticket (bus, airplane, boat, etc.). If you are travelling through a few countries in Central America, you will need to show proof of your itinerary and a departure ticket from your last destination. Please print the itinerary and voucher and bring it with you. Be prepared for rain and lower temperatures during the winter season (June-November), especially in Costa Rica's central valley. Looking to add to your experience? Check out our Extras! Specially designed for travellers with unique interests, Extras are optional add-ons to your G adventures trip that make your adventure more you-centric. Extras must be booked prior to departure, please see details in our optional activities field and ask your sales GCO or travel agent about booking.

Eating is a big part of traveling. Travelling with G Adventures you experience the vast array of wonderful food that is available out in the world. Generally meals are not included in the trip price when there is a choice of eating options, to give you the maximum flexibility in deciding where, what and with whom to eat. It also gives you more budgeting flexibility, though generally food is cheap. Our groups tend to eat together to enable you to taste a larger variety of dishes and enjoy each other's company. There is no obligation to do this though. Your CEO will be able to suggest favourite restaurants during your trip. The above information applies to G Adventures group trips. For Independent trips please check the itinerary for details of meals included. For all trips please refer to the meals included and budget information for included meals and meal budgets.
