Highlights
  • Kick back on costa rica's pristine beaches
  • Visit a local family to learn to make tortillas
  • Spot nature in a dense cloud forest
  • Enjoy the natural beauty of manuel antonio national park
  • Kayak and paddle-board in la fortuna

Nothing brings learning to life like real-world experience. This week-long trip’s engaging lesson plan gives kids an education in biology and ecology that can never be found in a textbook. Here, spend the days (and nights!) studying the flora and fauna that inhabit the cloud forest and Manuel Antonio National Park. Elsewhere, get in touch with the land by rappelling, rafting, swimming, horseback-riding, and even surfing all over it. Science + gym? You do the math.

The first leg of the journey we missed our flight to Houston due to weather but your company sent us a driver to San Jose to pick us up and deliver us to La Fortuna which happened to several other families so we caught.Several of the children and a couple of adults got "van sick" and maybe it would be important to let people know if they get slightly car sick to bring along Dramamine for motion sickness. The mountains were awesome but winding up and down was too much for some. But overall we enjoyed everything about the trip and will recommend a family vacation in beautiful Costa Rica !!!!!!

It was great. The accommodation in San Jose and Monteverde - terrible !! The breakfasts in all hotels (except San Bada - horrible) - no way to start your day!! Given the food was SO expensive - the only "free" meal being breakfast was horrid and couldn't eat it - so that was not good. Better accommodations would make the trip much better. Better included activities would make it better as well.

I was very happy that the trip was completely planned for me. I was traveling alone with my son and was worried about being thrown in with other families but all the families were very welcoming. We had an amazing time!

We loved Costa Rica. It was a beautiful country and we feel privileged to have seen it both from an adventure break and from a beach (after the tour). The tour was high energy and really enjoyable and I think it helped us enjoy the beach part of our stay even more.

Itinerary

Day 1 San José

Amid the hustle and bustle of this busy capital, San José has beautiful parks, museums and an ornate National Theatre. Start your exploration of the city in the central plaza, a great place to people-watch. A mime, juggler, marimba band, magician, or storyteller may be performing for whatever is collected when the hat is passed. Artisan booths are common, creating a regular arts and crafts fair atmosphere. Included Activities: Arrival Day and Welcome Meeting Transport: Arrival Airport Transfer

Day 2 San José/La Fortuna (1B, 1L)

A three-hour van trip brings us to La Fortuna, near the base of the spectacular Arenal Volcano. La Fortuna is a great base for active adventures. Along the way, stop to meet Doña Mara and learn the art of making (and eating!) tortillas. Once we arrive, there's time to relax in the hot springs that are heated by the volcano's lava. During our stay in La Fortuna, there is a wide selection of activities sure to please every member of the family. From river rafting, to rappelling down waterfalls, to floating along the canals of the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge in search of caiman, there is no excuse to be bored! Included Activities: Tortilla Making and Local Lunch Transport: Private Vehicle (3.00 hour(s))

Day 3 La Fortuna (1B)

Take to the lake for a morning of stand-up paddle boarding and kayaking on Lake Arenal, before a free afternoon. Additional Notes: This morning there is an included kayak/SUP activity on Lake Arenal. Half the group will start by kayaking and switch to SUP mid-way through, and vice versa. Included Activities: Stand Up Paddle (Lesson and Tour) Kayak Lake Arenal

Day 4 La Fortuna/Monteverde (1B)

From La Fortuna, we make our way first by boat, then by van up the rough mountain roads to reach the fresh misty air of the Monteverde Cloud Forest. Spend two days exploring the community and nearby forest, truly a bird lover’s paradise. Included Activities: Guided Cloud Forest Night Walk Transport: Private Vehicle (0.25 hour(s)) Boat (0.75 hour(s)) Private Vehicle (3.50 hour(s))

Day 5 Monteverde (1B)

Enjoy a free day in this lush cloud forest region. Opt to fly above the trees on a canopy zipline tour, go horseback riding in the hills or visit the butterfly garden.

Day 6 Monteverde/Manuel Antonio (1B)

The white sand beaches and warm Pacific waters are the ideal atmosphere to relax at the end of your adventure. Manuel Antonio NP offers excellent hiking, spectacular views, and abundant wildlife viewing. An included hike goes deep into the park, to explore everything that can be found here. Enjoy the beautiful white sand beaches and discover why the warm turquoise water is ideal for swimming, fishing, kayaking, boogie boarding, sailing or surfing - the perfect finale to an exciting family adventure! Overnight in Manuel Antonio. Included Activities: Manuel Antonio National Park Guided Hike Transport: Private Vehicle (6.00 hour(s), 267km)

Day 7 Manuel Antonio (1B)

Solo Notes

We believe single travellers should not have to pay more to travel so our group trips are designed for shared accommodation and do not involve a single supplement. Single travellers joining group trips are paired in twin or multi-share accommodation with someone of the same sex for the duration of the trip. Some of our Independent trips are designed differently and single travellers on these itineraries must pay the single trip price.
Accomodations
Hotels (8 nts).
Accommodation for family trips has been chosen to give the best location and facilities for your family. They may vary depending on the location and destination, but designed to give the most comfortable experience while travelling. You and your family will generally be sharing rooms on a twin or triple share basis. These rooms will be either adjoining or located at close proximity to each other. Families will be roomed together and not with other families everywhere we stay. If you have any special hotel requests at the time of booking, let us know and we will do what we can to accommodate them.

Important Notes

Costa Rica will not be allowing anyone to enter the country without proof of a departure ticket (bus, airplane, boat, etc.). If you are travelling through a few countries in Central America, you will need to show proof of your itinerary and a departure ticket from your last destination. Please print the itinerary and voucher and bring it with you. Be prepared for rain and lower temperatures during the winter season (June-November), especially in Costa Rica's central valley.

Meals

Eating is a big part of traveling. Travelling with G Adventures you experience the vast array of wonderful food that is available out in the world. Generally meals are not included in the trip price when there is a choice of eating options, to give you the maximum flexibility in deciding where, what and with whom to eat. It also gives you more budgeting flexibility, though generally food is cheap. Our groups tend to eat together to enable you to taste a larger variety of dishes and enjoy each other's company. There is no obligation to do this though. Your CEO will be able to suggest favourite restaurants during your trip. The above information applies to G Adventures group trips. Please refer to the meals included and budget information for included meals and meal budgets.

Rules & Other Requirements Illegal drugs will not be tolerated on any trips. Possessing or using drugs not only contravenes the laws of the land but also puts the rest of the group at risk. Smoking marijuana and opium is a part of local culture in some parts of the world but is not acceptable for our travellers. Our philosophy of travel is one of respect towards everyone we encounter, and in particular the local people who make the world the special place it is.
