Mexico Monarch Butterfly Trail was my 2nd G Adventure. The first was a Costa Rica volunteer trip in 2007. I didn't know how I'd like group travel, but the first experience was exceptional and drew me back for the second. As an anthropologist, I really appreciate the emphasis on local accommodations and experiences. The small groups and mix of structured and unstructured time on the trips also suits me well. Seeing the Monarch butterfly Biosphere Reserves was a lifelong dream, as I have raised and studied Monarchs for 50 years and tagged them for 45 years. Of all the cathedrals I saw in Michoacán, El Rosario, El Capulin, and Sierra Chincua were by far the most awe-inspiring! The experience has only reinforced my commitment to continue advocacy for conservation of these magnificent creatures. Another feature of the tour I really enjoyed and appreciated was having retired anthropologist Miguel Nunez as a second cultural guide in Patzcuaro and Morelia! His walking tour of Morelia was a wonderful half-day, and his knowledge of and passion for the biodiversity of the natural resources in the area was fascinating and inspiring.

I had an amazing time travelling around Mexico with G adventures. I loved getting off the beaten track and checking out more of the local culture. Our day checking out the cenotes was great fun as it was like we were all in our own private little swimming holes.

Overall it was fantastic! Even with the amount of travel time it was well worth it and I would definitely recommend it to friends and family. The sights were great but also meeting the other travelers in our group was great. We made friends for future travel and ones that may come to visit our part of the world some day as well. I would definitely consider another G Adventure tour in our future travel plans.

Age Notes

Min. Age: You must be 18 to travel unaccompanied on a G Adventures tour. For minors travelling with a guardian over 21 years old, the minimum age is 12.

Physical Requirements Our small group adventures bring together people of all ages. It is very important you are aware that, as a minimum, an average level of fitness and mobility' is required to undertake our easiest programs. Travellers must be able to walk without the aid of another person, climb 3-4 flights of stairs, step on and off small boats, and carry their own luggage at a minimum. Travellers with a pre-existing medical condition are required to complete a short medical questionnaire, which must be signed by their physician. This is to ensure that travellers have the necessary fitness and mobility to comfortably complete their chosen trip. While our CEOs work hard to ensure that all our travellers are catered for equally, it is not their responsibility to help individuals who cannot complete the day's activities unaided. Please refer to the physical ratings in this Trip Details document for more information. The medical questionnaire can be found online at:
Rules & Other Requirements Illegal drugs will not be tolerated on any trips. Possessing or using drugs not only contravenes the laws of the land but also puts the rest of the group at risk. Smoking marijuana and opium is a part of local culture in some parts of the world but is not acceptable for our travellers. Our philosophy of travel is one of respect towards everyone we encounter, and in particular the local people who make the world the special place it is. The exploitation of prostitutes is completely contrary to this philosophy. Our CEOs have the right to expel any member of the group if drugs are found in their possession or if they use prostitutes.
