Overview

Highlights

  • Visit markets and learn about festival preparations
  • Take part in celebrations during a day of the dead parade
  • Relax in the tropical paradise of puerto escondido

Short Description

In Mexico, death isn’t the end of the road — it’s the beginning of a huge party. Rooted in Aztec tradition, Oaxaca’s colourful Dead of the Dead festivities have been drawing curious visitors for decades. This week-long tour throws you right into the middle of the action with four straight days of parades, macabre costumes, and market visits in search of sugar skulls. Then, it’s off to the coastal town of Puerto Escondido for a few days of well-earned R&R on the beach you’ll be more than grateful for — or, if you’ve still got the energy, parties galore.

Small groups are usually defined as between 10 and 24 travelers, often less. If you're the kind of person who enjoys more intimate experiences and personal service this is a good choice. All else being equal you will pay a premium for this style vs a larger group tour.

Itinerary

Day 1 Oaxaca

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a festival that runs from October 31 to November 2 to celebrate and remember loved ones who have deceased. Although the festival is to honour those who have passed on, it is a festive and upbeat celebration rather than somber gathering. Families cook feasts and offer them by the graves of those who have passed to encourage them to come back and join in on the festivities. Oaxaca is one of the main hubs of celebrations for Day of the Dead – the cemetery vigils and street parades make this an experience not to miss! Included Activities: Meet Your CEO and Group

Day 2 Oaxaca

Stop by a local market to learn about local traditions and ceremonial objects used during Day of the Dead celebrations. Included Activities: Oaxaca Market Visit

Day 3 Oaxaca

Join in the celebrations during a Day of the Dead parade. Experience all that is going on in the zócalo or main square. Included Activities: Day of the Dead Parade

Day 4 Oaxaca

Enjoy free time to take part in the celebrations in the zócalo, spend the day checking out nearby artisan towns, or visit the ruins of Monte Albán.

Day 5 Oaxaca/Puerto Escondido

Travel to the tropical paradise of Puerto Escondido. Enjoy free time for optional activities, or chill on the beach. Transport: Private Vehicle (6.00-7.00 hours, 255km)

Day 6 Puerto Escondido

If you haven't hit the waves yet, grab a board and hang ten, then enjoy an optional final night out with the group.

Day 7 Puerto Escondido

Depart at any time. Additional Notes: Puerto Escondido has an airport with daily flight connections to Mexico City. There are also multiple daily first-class buses that travel to Mexico City or Oaxaca City from Puerto Escondido. Included Activities: Departure Day

Great first time experience in Europe. I got to hike the Alps with a great CEO that was well organised and really friendly. I also met 9 other travellers from across the world and learned a lot while hiking 24 KM Trek's with them. I would recommend this trip to anyone looking to take a break from city life and enjoy the beauty of the Alps.

Great group tour experience. I was glad that I packed light! It was a small surprise to take so much public transportation everywhere. But our guide was amazing, and we saw a nice combination of classic sights and local gems.

Trek Hidden Costa Rica is a great way to explore the country. I feel like I got so much more out of this trip than I would have on a tour that hits all touristy spots. Very active trip, got to see a lot of wildlife, plus beach/mountains/countryside/waterfalls - so many amazing views! Would highly recommend this trip and will very likely be traveling with GAdventures again.

Magnificent mountain peaks, stunning glaciers and picture-perfect lakes. The twelve-person tour was well organized and well paced. Our guide, Romi, was fun and competent. She took good care of us and made sure we had a good time.

Half a dozen local guides joined us along the way, contributing new knowledge and their own perspectives.

Note that there were many more optional activities than were listed on the website, including a day in Bariloche of rafting or horseback riding with gauchos. We also enjoyed a couple of home visits, one featuring a meal prepared in a traditional pot made from a plow disk. And then there was that sweet trip to the dulce de leche tasting shop... So many pleasures, big and small, in an incredibly beautiful land!

My advice: Go a day early so you can take in Buenos Aires’ San Telmo Feria, a ten-block street market that is only held on Sundays.

Flights & Transport

Only ground transport Private vehicle, walking.

Group Size:

Small Group - 24 max

The G staff to traveller ratio of a small group, but it's a G party! The more the merrier.

Solo Notes

We believe solo travellers should not have to pay more to travel so our group trips are designed for shared accommodation and do not involve a single supplement. Single travellers joining group trips are paired in twin or multi-share accommodation with someone of the same sex for the duration of the trip. Some of our Independent trips are designed differently and solo travellers on these itineraries must pay the single trip price.

Accomodations

Hotels/hostels (6 nts, most multi-share).

Accommodation will be varied throughout your adventure. Some nights we use multi-share accommodation, on a single-sex basis (typically 4-6 people per room). We have specifically chosen unique accommodations to give local flavour to your trip. Couples: Please note that due to the variety of accommodation used in Central America, couples will be split into separate rooms when we use multi-share hostels. Pending availability, couples may be able to pay extra while on tour to have their own room in some destinations.

Age Notes

Min. Age: Minimum age of 18 years for this trip.

Rules & Other Requirements

Illegal drugs will not be tolerated on any trips. Possessing or using drugs not only contravenes the laws of the land but also puts the rest of the group at risk. Smoking marijuana and opium is a part of local culture in some parts of the world but is not acceptable for our travellers. Our philosophy of travel is one of respect towards everyone we encounter, and in particular the local people who make the world the special place it is. The exploitation of people in the sex trade is completely contrary to this philosophy. Our CEOs have the right to expel any member of the group if drugs are found in their possession or if they engage in any form of paid sex work.
