The trip was great. It ran smoothly, our CEO Yuri did a great job, and we saw so many new and interesting things. Also, we thought that the trip was a good value considering all the places we went to. August 2015

The trip was great. Although it was a little exhausting, and at time strenuous, it was nothing we couldn't handle. We got to see many sides of Peru, including the cosmopolitan Lima, the historical Cusco, the Amazon Jungle, and the frontier type towns of Juliaca and Puno. Machu Picchu was inspiring and more than I imagined. The white water rafting, although we were all a little frightened, our guides did a great job and the rafting trip was something we will all remember. However, the most impressive thing about our trip to Peru was meeting the people and seeing first hand the unique culture of the people that must date back possibly thousands of years.

Itinerary

Day 1 Lima

Arrive at any time. Arrival transfer included. Additional Notes: If you booked the Lima Cooking Class it does not include extra time in Lima and we highly recommend booking pre-trip accommodation. You will be picked up from your hotel at approx 10:00 (10:30 from Aug-Dec) and taken to a local market and restaurant to prepare and enjoy a traditional Peruvian meal. You will return back to your hotel around 13:00. Please note: hot water shortages and power outages can be fairly common in Peru (even in upgraded hotels and private homes). We appreciate your patience and understanding that these occurrences are outside of our control.

Day 2 Lima/Tambopata (1B, 1L, 1D)

Fly from Lima to Puerto Maldonado, deep in the lowlands of the Amazon jungle. Travel by motorized canoe to our lodge in the Tambopata rainforest area, which holds the world record for the most bird sightings in one area. Explore the jungle with local guides before flying to Cusco, located high in the Andes. Depending on flight arrival times, enjoy either a boxed lunch aboard the boat or lunch upon arrival at the lodge. Rubber boots are provided at the lodge. Additional Notes: The lodge itself combines native architectural style and materials with low-impact, eco-friendly technology. Rooms are simple but comfortable, with mosquito netting for individual beds, flush toilets, showers (no hot water), and kerosene lamps for lighting (no electricity). Local community members make up the majority of lodge staff, including multilingual naturalist guides. Take the opportunity to learn from them about the area’s rich flora and fauna, and their extensive practical uses for medicinal plants and other forest plant resources through traditional techniques for building, fishing, and hunting. Transport: Fly from Lima to Puerto Maldonado Plane (2.50 hour(s)) During the voyage, take the opportunity to see bird species typical of the river or forest edge such as black skimmers, pied lapwings, capped herons, Jabiru storks, roadside hawks, and several species of kingfishers, swallows, and flycatchers. Motorized canoe (3.00 hour(s))

Day 3 Tambopata (1B, 1L, 1D)

Enjoy visits to oxbow lakes and small clay licks to learn about the jungle and its inhabitants. Be introduced to the area’s rich flora and fauna by expert naturalist guides, who can teach extensive uses for medicinal and other forest plant resources through traditional techniques. Be prepared to go early morning or evening to avoid the heat of midday. Enjoy a leisurely pace – the trip requires some walking, but nothing too strenuous. Included Activities: Jungle Excursions

Day 4 Tambopata/Cusco (1B)

Transfer by boat, then take a morning flight high into the Andes and the heart of Inca territory to Cusco. Spend the afternoon acclimatizing and getting to know the city. Cusco is the continent’s oldest continuously inhabited city, and the hub of the South American travel network. Transport: Motorized canoe (3.00 hour(s)) Plane (1.00-1.50 hours, 320km)

Day 5 Cusco/Aguas Calientes (1B)

Transfer to Ollantaytambo, the town and fortress are strategically situated overlooking the beautiful Urubamba River valley. This major ruin site is known as the best surviving example of Inca urban planning and engineering. It is admired for its huge steep terraces guarding the Inca Fortress and for being one of the few places where the Spanish lost a major battle during the conquest. Take a scenic train to get to Aguas Calientes villages, passing by beautiful Urubamba Valley. Transport: Private Vehicle (1.75 hour(s), 94km) Train (1.50 hour(s))

Day 6 Machu Picchu/Cusco (1B)

Enjoy the unique experience of visiting the historic spiritual centre of the Incas, the "Lost City" of Machu Picchu. Tour the ruins and have the opportunity to soak in the nearby thermal baths. Return by train to Ollantaytambo or Poroy and then transfer by van to Cusco. Included Activities: Machu Picchu Guided Tour Transport: Train (2.00-3.00 hours, 118km) Private Vehicle (2.00-2.50 hours, 95km)

Day 7 Cusco (1B)

Every year, Cusco attracts thousands of travellers who come to delve into its noble but tragic past. It is the perfect base for optional explorations around the city and area as well as a range of outdoor activities. Relax and explore this fascinating city, and take time to acclimatize to the high altitude. Please Note - on some departures it may not be possible to visit the Cusco Youth Drop-in Centre, as it may be closed for seasonal holidays. On these occasions, this visit will be replaced with a visit the Caccaccollo and the Planeterra Women's Weaving co-op. Here your family can meet the women and learn about traditional weaving methods. Included Activities: Cusco Youth Drop-in Centre Visit

Day 8 Cusco/Lima (1B)

The evening is the last chance for a dinner with our group. Peruvian food is now becoming world renowned. Opt to try some delicious ceviche, juicy lomo saltado, or perhaps guinea pig. Adults might want to try the famous Pisco sour, but this drink is definitely not for the kids. Transport: Plane (1.50-2.00 hours, 572km)

Day 9 Lima (1B)

Depart at any time. Additional Notes: We recommend booking additional time in Lima to explore. The optional activities below may require additional time, speak to your CEO for further information.

Solo Notes

We believe solo travellers should not have to pay more to travel so our group trips are designed for shared accommodation and do not involve a single supplement. Single travellers joining group trips are paired in twin or multi-share accommodation with someone of the same sex for the duration of the trip. Some of our Independent trips are designed differently and solo travellers on these itineraries must pay the single trip price.
Accomodations
Hotels (6 nts), G Lodge Amazon (2 nts)
Accommodation for family trips has been chosen to give the best location and facilities for your family. They may vary depending on the location and destination, but designed to give the most comfortable experience while travelling. You and your family will generally be sharing rooms on a twin or triple share basis. These rooms will be either adjoining or located at close proximity to each other. Families will be roomed together and not with other families everywhere we stay. If you have any special hotel requests at the time of booking, let us know and we will do what we can to accommodate them. Please note that hot water shortages and power outages can be fairly common in Peru (even in upgraded hotels and private homes). We appreciate your patience and understanding that these occurrences are outside of our control.

Age Notes

Min. Age: Minimum age of 6 years for this trip.

Physical Requirements Our small group adventures bring together people of all ages. It is very important you are aware that, as a minimum, an average level of fitness and mobility' is required to undertake our easiest programs. Travellers must be able to walk without the aid of another person, climb 3-4 flights of stairs, step on and off small boats, and carry their own luggage at a minimum. Travellers with a pre-existing medical condition are required to complete a short medical questionnaire, which must be signed by their physician. This is to ensure that travellers have the necessary fitness and mobility to comfortably complete their chosen trip. While our CEOs work hard to ensure that all our travellers are catered for equally, it is not their responsibility to help individuals who cannot complete the day's activities unaided. Please refer to the physical ratings in this Trip Details document for more information. The medical questionnaire can be found online at: www.gadventures.com/medical-form.
Rules & Other Requirements Illegal drugs will not be tolerated on any trips. Possessing or using drugs not only contravenes the laws of the land but also puts the rest of the group at risk. Smoking marijuana and opium is a part of local culture in some parts of the world but is not acceptable for our travellers. Our philosophy of travel is one of respect towards everyone we encounter, and in particular the local people who make the world the special place it is. The exploitation of prostitutes is completely contrary to this philosophy. Our group leader has the right to expel any member of the group if drugs are found in their possession or if they use prostitutes.
