Short Description

Take part in rituals and haggle for a bargain in the markets. From modern Beijing, travel back in time across scenic countryside to Tibet on this well-packed overland adventure. Witness the splendour of the Potala Palace and the majesty of remote monasteries and then celebrate the stunning overland journey to Kathmandu. Wake up to views of Everest and enjoy a window into the heart of this remote land. A local guide and Chief Experience Officer will show you the region’s hidden gems and make sure your trip burns brightly in your memory long after you've climbed down from the roof of the world.

Small groups are usually defined as between 10 and 24 travelers, often less. If you're the kind of person who enjoys more intimate experiences and personal service this is a good choice. All else being equal you will pay a premium for this style vs a larger group tour.

Itinerary

Day 1 Beijing

There are no activities planned until an evening welcome meeting. Additional Notes: Peak season notice: Golden Week falls between October 1st and 7th, 2019/2020/2021. Please note that Golden Week is a semi-annual 7-day or 8-day national holiday for the people of China. This is a very busy time of the year for domestic tourists, so expect some crowding at major attractions. We recommend booking these dates well in advance as accommodations and transportation availability is extremely limited. Included Activities: Arrival Day and Welcome Meeting

Day 2 Beijing

Set out early for the Great Wall at Mutianyu. Spend the day wandering from tower to tower along this magnificent feat of construction. Opt to see a Shaolin Monk Kung Fu Show, the Beijing Opera, or the Beijing Acrobats. Opt to pre-book the Beijing Acrobatics Performance on the checkout page to include this optional activity on your tour or ask your GCO or travel agent for assistance. Included Activities: Great Wall Mutianyu Visit Transport: Travel out to the Great Wall and back. Private Vehicle

Days 3-4 Beijing/Lhasa

Enjoy learning about Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City before using some free time to explore more of the capital. In the evening, depart on a 48-hr train journey to Lhasa. Enjoy watching the scenery completely change as you climb onto the Tibetan Plateau. Additional Notes: We aim to get the best sleeping berths available on each train journey. During peak season (summer) we cannot guarantee which beds will be available. Included Activities: Tiananmen Square Forbidden City Tour Transport: The train trip is a long, yet rewarding, journey through the heart of northern China then south across the Tibetan Plateau. The spectacular scenery makes this a once-in-a-lifetime train journey. Basic overnight train (beds) (48.00 hour(s))

Day 5 Lhasa

Arrive in Lhasa in the evening. Take an orientation walk around and start acclimatizing to the altitude.

Days 6-8 Lhasa

Over three days, explore all Lhasa and the surrounding areas have to offer. Visit Barkhor Square, the Jokhang Temple, the Potala Palace, and either Sera or Drepung Monastery. With free time, opt to visit the local markets or find a teahouse to spend a few hours relaxing with a warm cup of chai. Included Activities: Barkhor Square Orientation Walk Jokhang Temple Tour Potala Palace Tour Sera Monastery Tour

Day 9 Lhasa/Gyantse (1B)

The drive to Gyantse is a spectacular one, crossing three passes over 5,000m (16,404 ft) and skirting the shores of the beautiful turquoise lake, Yamdrok Tso. Transport: Private Vehicle (8.00 hour(s), 267km)

Day 10 Gyantse/Shigatse

Visit the Pelkor Chode Monastery and Gyantse Kumbum before travelling to Shigatse. Included Activities: Pelkor Chode Monastery and Gyantse Kumbum Visit Transport: Private Vehicle (1.50 hour(s), 90km)

Day 11 Shigatse/Tingri

Take some time to explore Tashilhunpo Monastery founded by the First Dalai Lama in the 1400's. This amazing structure of history has been expanded over the centuries and is also known as the 'Heap of Glory'. Once the group is ready to move on, jump in the private vehicle and make your way to Tingri. Included Activities: Tashilhunpo Monastery Visit Transport: Private Vehicle (4.00-6.00 hours, 240km)

Day 12 Tingri/Rongbuk

Take an exhilarating drive to reach Rongbuk — 5,000m (16,404 ft) and a mere 7km (4.4 mi) below Everest Base Camp. The view from here is utterly spectacular. Included Activities: Shegar Dzong Visit Rongbuk Monastery Guesthouse Transport: Private Vehicle (2.00-3.00 hours, 100km)

Day 13 Rongbuk/Kyirong

On today's drive, ride alongside Paiko Tso Lake and marvel at its turquoise colour. Reach Kunda La Pass at 5236m, which offers breathtaking views of the Himalayas. Start the descent through winding roads into Kyirong and feel the change in altitude. See the change in scenery from snowy mountain peaks, to more greenery and blue skies. Transport: Private Vehicle (7.00-8.00 hours, 430km)

Day 14 Kyirong/Kathmandu

Prepare for another beautiful driving day on your way to Nepal. There's plenty of lush green forests along the highway towards the Tibet – Nepal border at Rasuwa Gadi. After immigration, cross the bridge joining Tibet and Nepal by foot. Jump on a bus and make the winding, bumpy, yet extremely scenic drive to Kathmandu. Additional Notes: Kyirong is the main customs border crossing between Tibet and Nepal, for tourists and for commercial purpose. As such, it can be quite busy and there can be long wait times. Included Activities: Border Crossing (Kyirong to Kathmandu) Transport: Private Vehicle (1.00 hour(s), 30km) Private Vehicle (9.00 hour(s), 140km)

Day 15 Kathmandu

Depart at any time.

Great first time experience in Europe. I got to hike the Alps with a great CEO that was well organised and really friendly. I also met 9 other travellers from across the world and learned a lot while hiking 24 KM Trek's with them. I would recommend this trip to anyone looking to take a break from city life and enjoy the beauty of the Alps.

Great group tour experience. I was glad that I packed light! It was a small surprise to take so much public transportation everywhere. But our guide was amazing, and we saw a nice combination of classic sights and local gems.

Trek Hidden Costa Rica is a great way to explore the country. I feel like I got so much more out of this trip than I would have on a tour that hits all touristy spots. Very active trip, got to see a lot of wildlife, plus beach/mountains/countryside/waterfalls - so many amazing views! Would highly recommend this trip and will very likely be traveling with GAdventures again.

Magnificent mountain peaks, stunning glaciers and picture-perfect lakes. The twelve-person tour was well organized and well paced. Our guide, Romi, was fun and competent. She took good care of us and made sure we had a good time.

Half a dozen local guides joined us along the way, contributing new knowledge and their own perspectives.

Note that there were many more optional activities than were listed on the website, including a day in Bariloche of rafting or horseback riding with gauchos. We also enjoyed a couple of home visits, one featuring a meal prepared in a traditional pot made from a plow disk. And then there was that sweet trip to the dulce de leche tasting shop... So many pleasures, big and small, in an incredibly beautiful land!

My advice: Go a day early so you can take in Buenos Aires’ San Telmo Feria, a ten-block street market that is only held on Sundays.

Flights & Transport

Only ground transport Train, private bus, walking. All overnight train accommodations are in hard-sleeper carriages: 6-bed open berths. Berths do not have doors/curtains and are open to the rest of the carriage – earplugs and an eye mask are recommended in case noise or movement in the carriage is disruptive to you. Berths are arranged in 3 tiers of bunks and pillows/sheets/blankets are provided. Each carriage is equipped with shared squat toilets (some will have Western toilets). Trains are modern, air-conditioned, and offer a smooth ride. Food/drink is available for purchase on board. We use a private minibus for portions of this tour. through Tibet and into Nepal. While the border crossing between Tibet and Nepal is quite new, its important to note that roads in general in remote areas of these countries are often narrow, winding and poorly maintained so be prepared for bumpy rides. That said, the stunning views more than make up for a bit of discomfort.

Maximum Number of People in Group: 16

Solo Notes

We believe single travellers should not have to pay more to travel so our group trips are designed for shared accommodation and do not involve a single supplement. Single travellers joining group trips are paired in twin or multi-share accommodation with someone of the same sex for the duration of the trip. Some of our Independent trips are designed differently and single travellers on these itineraries must pay the single trip price.

Accomodations

Hotels (11 nts), guesthouse (1 nt, multi-share), sleeper train (2 nts).

A variety of styles of hotels/guest houses are used on this trip. In many instances they might not be like what you are used to back home as service and efficiency can vary. In some areas we stay in simple local guest houses in stunning locations - rooms are small and simple and there may only be shared toilet facilities and showers. A sleep sheet is recommended as whilst there is plenty of bedding and (in most cases) it does get washed, it can be dusty.

Guides

Chief Experience Officer (CEO) throughout, local guides.

Age Notes

Min. Age: You must be 18 to travel unaccompanied on a G Adventures tour. For minors travelling with a guardian over 21 years old, the minimum age is 12.

Additional Information:

Important Notes

1. ALTITUDE SICKNESS This trip operates at altitudes over 3500m (max altitude 5630m). Whilst we travel slowly allowing plenty of time to acclimatise you may experience headaches, nausea, lethargy on arrival in Lhasa. It is important to be aware of the affects of altitude on one's tolerance especially on long driving days. 2. ACCOMMODATION Accommodation in western Tibet (particularly at near Everest Base Camp) is extremely basic - only multishare rooms may be available and little or no running water. Basic pit toilets. 3. WEATHER The sun is intense - hat and sun screen are essential as well as drinking plenty of water as altitude exacerbates dehydration. 4. DRONES IN NEPAL Please note that drones and the flying of drones are prohibited in Nepal. If you violate these regulations the police may take you into custody. 5. Peak season notice: Golden Week falls between October 1st and 7th, 2019/2020/2021. Please note that Golden Week is a semi-annual 7-day or 8-day national holiday for the people of China. This is a very busy time of the year for domestic tourists, so expect some crowding at major attractions. We recommend booking these dates well in advance as accommodations and transportation availability is extremely limited.

Meals

Eating is a big part of traveling. Travelling with G Adventures you experience the vast array of wonderful food that is available out in the world. Generally meals are not included in the trip price when there is a choice of eating options, to give you the maximum flexibility in deciding where, what and with whom to eat. It also gives you more budgeting flexibility, though generally food is cheap. Our groups tend to eat together to enable you to taste a larger variety of dishes and enjoy each other's company. There is no obligation to do this though. Your CEO will be able to suggest favourite restaurants during your trip. Included breakfasts will usually be asian style consisting of noodles or congee (rice porridge) or bread and eggs. Vegetarians will be able to find a range of different foods, although in some areas the choice maybe limited. While trekking in remote regions food is included, plentiful and made of fresh local ingredients. For all trips please refer to the meals included and budget information for included meals and meal budgets.

Rules & Other Requirements

Illegal drugs will not be tolerated on any trips. Possessing or using drugs not only contravenes the laws of the land but also puts the rest of the group at risk. Smoking marijuana and opium is a part of local culture in some parts of the world but is not acceptable for our travellers. Our philosophy of travel is one of respect towards everyone we encounter, and in particular the local people who make the world the special place it is. The exploitation of prostitutes is completely contrary to this philosophy. Our CEOs have the right to expel any member of the group if drugs are found in their possession or if they use prostitutes.
