Short Description

Here's an African adventure that starts among Tanzania's most famous wildlife reserves before taking you to remote under-explored national parks of the southern circuit. Embark on wildlife drives in Lake Manyara National Park (keeping your eyes open for the elusive tree-climbing lions), meet one of the researchers at the Serengeti Wildlife Centre, and scan your surroundings in the protected Selous Game Reserve for the zeals of zebras that call these grasslands home. Experience some of the best wildlife viewing in the world amid the landscapes of Tanzania.

Small groups are usually defined as between 10 and 24 travelers, often less. If you're the kind of person who enjoys more intimate experiences and personal service this is a good choice. All else being equal you will pay a premium for this style vs a larger group tour.

Although advertised as a National Geographic tour, this G Adventures tour cannot match the high standard one would expect from Nat Geo. Our young driver/ tour guide did her best, but was no naturalist. She gave a bare minimum of info on our long drives and mostly just played music inside our bus. A couple of activities actually led by naturalists (our Sequoia guide & Monterey Aquarium guide) were excellent. And the marine biologist on the booked Whale Watch was excellent too. But much of the rest of this tour was disappointing in comparison with other small group tours we've taken. I could go into extensive detail, but there is too much to say. I'll give just one example: the lack of specific dates, times and accommodations on our itinerary. We were promised the "Wuksachi Lodge or similar" in Sequoia National Park but arrived at John Muir Lodge in King's Canyon instead. Now, anyone who has visited Sequoia will know that the John Muir is in no way "similar" to the Wuksachi, Sequoia's signature lodge and one of the reasons I chose G Adventures for this tour. All in all, this trip was a big disappointment.

Poorly-chosen itinerary. Crappy hotels with no air-conditioning, broken fridges, clogged showers, and smoked-through "non-smoking" rooms. No meals, no transport: you want it, you have to pay for it. Treated like cattle in the "third-class" accommodations on the overnight train. What did we pay for???

The tour started in Bali and ended there. From day 1, it was full of adventures and wonderful vibes from everyone, all led by our knowledgeable guide Hans. He was at the center of everything and he knows the place and people everywhere which made all the visits and the daily tours fantastic.
The places we visited were well chosen and the timing was paced to everyone's ability. We had to get up early for a sunrise trip to Kelimutu and this remained memorable to all of us. The Komodo Island trip with the Komodo dragoons was equally fantastic.
We enjoyed the final parts of the tour with the beaches, among others the Pink Beach and the hotel on the beach in Labuan Bajo, Flores.
Overall, the tour was wonderful. I would end with a special word to the guide Hans: Thank you Hans, and good luck. Dave

The experience was great and our CEO had excellent knowledge on the sites we visited as well as Egypt in general. Our accommodation however was not close to the "3 star" as advertised. Albeit the staff was nice, the hotels were not really well maintained and it was more comfortable to sleep on the floor than on the bed. The breakfast was minimal - eggs were very oily in pans that looked like they were last cleaned a decade ago. I would definitely recommend taking the package but rather seeking your own accommodation.

This trip was a bucket list trip. We were thrilled with the amount of detail and planning that G Adventures put into this. It was amazing. there was a perfect mix of urban meets rural. The Safari's were spectacular. The wild life interaction was more than we bargained for. The lodges were very accommodating and the service beyond compare. Our CEO (guide) was very knowledgeable and in tune with everyone's needs. We chose to stay in Zambia a 3 days after the scheduled trip. Most of our souvenirs were found here. The night entertainment was great. We believe that group guided trips are not for every vacation. This one is definitely one to let G Adventures do the research and planning for you. Just go and relax there is a lot to enjoy.

Flights & Transport

Only ground transport 4x4 safari vehicle, plane, boat, walking. The first half of this trip is done in private 7-seat 4x4 safari vehicles. With sliding windows and a large pop-up roofs, these vehicles are designed for wildlife viewing. Road conditions can run the full range of conditions from new to very poor, and during dry seasons, the roads can become very dusty. This style of travel is the best under the local circumstances, as the seats are comfortable and having our own private vehicle allow us the flexibility of making stops when needed, and to stay and watch that crouching lion prepare for an attack. Speed governors set to 80kph are used on all vehicles to ensure a safe driving speed. Please note for your own safety it is mandatory to wear your seat belt at all times when in a vehicle. All G Adventure vehicles are regularly serviced and follow a strict maintenance schedule. However given the long travel days and rough conditions of many of the roads in Africa, vehicles can and do breakdown on occasion. If such situations occur all drivers are trained mechanics and any vehicle issues are rectified as quickly as possible so as to not disrupt your trip. Your patience is requested if the vehicle you are traveling in happens to encounter a mechanical fault. On the second half of the trip we fly into remote park areas of Southern Tanzania. In most cases, we use the Cessna C208 Caravan that can take 13 passengers, but depending on schedules, we may also use smaller 5-6 passenger planes. Flights are not private to G Adventures and there may be stops to let other passengers off between our destinations. Please note each passenger is only allowed a total of 15kgs of checked and carry-on luggage combined, and must be in small soft-sided bags. This is strictly enforced by airlines and outside of our control. While on safari excursions, we will enjoy wildlife viewing in open vehicles with expert local safari/driver guides.

Local Flights

All Internal flights are included in small bush planes. Airlines have strict baggage restrictions of no more than 15kg per passenger in small/soft bag & small daypack. In order to balance the passenger and luggage loads the airline may be required to deploy more than one aircraft and consequently there maybe occasions groups and their luggage may be split up & your luggage may arrive later than you at the lodges. All flights are subject to local weather and airstrip conditions.

Group Size:

Small Group - 24 max

Maximum Number of People in Group: 6

Max 6, Avg 5.

Solo Notes

We believe solo travellers should not have to pay more to travel so our group trips are designed for shared accommodation and do not involve a single supplement. Single travellers joining group trips are paired in twin or multi-share accommodation with someone of the same sex for the duration of the trip. Some of our Independent trips are designed differently and solo travellers on these itineraries must pay the single trip price.

Accomodations

Safari Camp/lodges (5 nts), hotels (3 nts), comfortable tented camp (3 nts).

The start hotel on this tour offer comfortable accommodations with en-suite bathrooms, standard facilities, and wifi. Additional amenities vary from location to location. Please see the hotel listings on the Full Itinerary if you would like to learn more about the offerings of your accommodations. The tented camp accommodations on this tour are situated centrally, with easy access to the park for wildlife safari drives. Tents are typically spacious with mosquito-proof netting, comfortable bedding, and en-suite bathroom with flushing toilets and camping showers. Please remember that hotel/lodge/camp standards can be different from what you are used to in your home country, which is part of the appeal of adventure travel. Note: 1) Under certain circumstances we reserve the right to change accommodation and provide something slightly different to what is described, though it will always be of similar or better standard/level. 2) Most lodges and camps do not have 24hr electricity - they usually run on generators which are routinely shut off overnight from approximately 10pm to 5am. 3) Lodges and camps are NOT equipped with fans or air conditioning due to the electricity constraints listed above.
