• Hike to spectacular views of the Chapada Diamantina region and to Capão Valley waterfalls
  • Explore Salvador’s Pelourinho neighborhood, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Learn traditions of Bahia: music, dance, and cuisine

Salvador, Chapada Diamantina, and Trancoso are the three pillars of this well-balanced, gratifying sampling of Bahia, one of Brazil's Atlantic-hugging states that shines with colonial history, fun-loving culture, and mystifying landscapes.

Trip Description

Touching down in Salvador, you get your first taste of Bahia in the welcoming, colorful streets of the Pelourinho neighborhood, UNESCO listed for its urban planning. "Here everyone is a poet, and everyone is a musician,” says our Brazil bard, Jennine Cohen. To better understand who they are today, learn about their history and traditions: first attending a folkloric performance at Teatro Miguel Santa, and then visiting a capoeira studio where dancers’ impressive spins and kicks demonstrate an art developed by African slaves as a form of resistance.

Next it's on to Chapada Diamantina to savor vistas of unusual mesas from the Morro do Pai Inácio, to relish the lush gorges of Capão Valley, and to soak in heart-stirring waterfalls. A number of grottoes are yours to explore, some eerily dark and others bright with crystalline swimming holes. For the last act, fly to the coastal town of Trancoso, whose Quadrado, or main square, is bordered by houses painted bright hues of reds, greens, and blues. Stroll past its historic white church and languish on white-sand, semi-deserted beaches, repeating your new phrase—one of the most commonly heard in Bahia—tudo bem, or “all good.” It certainly is in such heavenly country.

My husband and I went to Bhutan with Geographic Expeditions for approximately 1.5 weeks. Geographic Expeditions really tailored the trip to our wants and desires, given all of the available options in Bhutan.

Geo Ex assigned a trip coordinator to us. We communicated with her via email and phone several times during the planning phase of the journey. She asked us thought provoking questions and really gave us good advice. For example, we were initially interested in trekking. She probed into the length of the trek that we would be willing to take. Given that we are from the SF Bay Area and have done a significant amount of hiking in the Rockies and Sierras, she advised us only to do a trek in Bhutan if it were going to be a long trek -- the shorter treks that we were contemplating would not take us to the spectacular Himalayan terrain that we would be expecting. Great advice when planning a trip -- we would not have known this without her and would have potentially been disappointed.

The guide that Geo Ex provided stayed with us during our entire trip. He spoke excellent English and both informative and funny. I don't think we could have gotten a better, local guide than Geo Ex provided.

I believe that we could choose lodging options from a few luxury options that were available. We went with Aman Hotels. Given that the hotels were all very similar in style, it might have been interesting to mix it up a bit more. But each hotel was small and truly first class in terms of luxury, room style and food.

All in all, I think Geographic Expeditions did a fantastic job. We enjoyed this luxurious journey. I would definitely recommend a Geo Ex trip -- especially for off the beaten path journeys.

Custom trip to Rwanda to trek to the silver back gorillas. Every facet of the trip was planned perfectly, our guide was able to take us to local hangouts and we even were able to visit his family and home. Second part of the trip was to S. Africa, but not through Geo Ex, and we had some real problems. We flew back to Joberg and called our contacts with GeoEx and they were able to provide us with guides and events for and enjoyable week in SA.

GeoEx is top notch in planning amazing family vacations. We've taken 4 trips with them: Kenya, India, Botswana and Morocco. Every one has been fantastic, customized to our preferences, with a world class guide, and the right balance of urban/countryside and a mix of different kinds of activities. All accommodations and arrangements are first class. Highly recommended.

Chile was an amazing Trip January 2017

I recently traveled with GeoEx to Chile and they made a relatively complicated itinerary into a seamless journey. After reading Travels In A Thin Country I wanted to see as much of Chile as I could possibly see in one trip and anyone who knows Chile or knows how huge and diverse it is knows what a daunting task that could be. My itinerary flowed seamlessly from one region to the next and right in the middle GeoEx set me up with a perfect little rest hotel called Refugia on the archipelago of Chiloe in the lakes district. I stayed in Chiloe between visiting the arid northern desert region of San Pedro de Atacama and the rugged southern landscape of Torres del Paine National Park in Chilean Patagonia. The guides at all of the properties GeoEx sent me to were top notch and vetted by their own staff who I learned travel frequently to check up on the accommodations, guides and excursions they offer on their trips. GeoEx is wonderful to collaborate with and gave me plenty of options to change and customize my itinerary so that it suited my interests. I am an avid photographer, cyclist, traveler and foodie who happens to speak some basic Spanish so Chile was an amazing fit!
