Short Description

Keep in mind that due to narrow streets in Reykjavík City Center many hotels do not have enough space for a coach to stop outside. Walking distance for passengers can be up to 10 minutes, depending on location. GJ Travel will use a shuttle to transfer the luggage that passengers need to pick up outside their hotel without any extra charge.

Groups are between 25-60 people, typically ~30-40. Usually there will be many opportunities to split off and enjoy meals and excursions in smaller groups. This is the most economical way to travel, saving up to 40% versus booking the same itinerary yourself.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival – Transfer Keflavík airport – Blue Lagoon – Reykjavík

Your group will be picked up at Keflavik International Airport. It is only a 20 minutes’ drive passing the town of Keflavik and a large lava field before we reach the Blue Lagoon. What an unusual and unique start of a holiday in any country! The Blue Lagoon is one of Iceland’s most popular attractions, a natural geothermal pool in the middle of a large and dramatic lava field and an oasis that owes its existence to a nearby geothermal power plant. We stop for 1½ - 2 hours for a refreshing bathe or a swim in the inviting, rejuvenating and pleasantly warm mineral-rich water (36°C-38°C/100-110°F), famed for its reputed healing properties. An indoor pool and geothermal sauna are also on the site. Bathing in this surreal environment is a unique experience no one should miss. The Blue Lagoon’s warm water and natural active ingredients like mineral salts, silica and blue green algae help you relax and escape the stress and strain of daily life. From the Blue Lagoon it takes about 45 minutes passing lava landscape and several suburbs before reaching Reykjavík, the northern most Capital city in the world.

Overnight: Fosshotel Lind

Day 2: The Classic Golden Circle

Meals: Breakfast

By a scenic route we reach Þingvellir (Thingvellir) National Park (1930) and UNESCO World Heritage Site (2004). We stroll around the country’s most sacred site, home of the oldest existing national parliament in the world, the Alþingi, and major events in the history of Iceland. Thingvellir is a place of fascinating natural beauty, a spectacular geological vista, set on a vast plain flanked by large fissures, right by Iceland’s largest lake, Thingvallavatn. The Mid-Atlantic rift is clearly visible; a rift that is forming as Iceland is being pulled apart by tectonic forces. Here the North-American and the Eurasian continental plates drift apart by 19mm (¾”) a year and a rift valley is forming. Next we drive to the mighty waterfall of Gullfoss - the Golden falls - perhaps the most beautiful in the country. Here the glacial river of Hvítá (white river) tumbles 32 meters (105 ft.) in a double cascade. After an optional lunch stop we explore the active geothermal area of Haukadalur which contains the geysers Geysir and Strokkur, and many other hot springs. Most active nowadays is Strokkur, erupting hot water and steam to elevation of 25 metres (82 ft) every 5-7 minutes. Then we drive on to Skálholt, an ancient bishopric, and for centuries the spiritual and educational heart of Iceland. We pass the greenhouse town of Hveragerði and continue over the mountain pass Hellisheiði, an area with large lava fields and steaming valleys.

Overnight: Fosshotel Lind

Day 3: Reykjavík City tour – Free for leisure in the afternoon / Optional Tours

Meals: Breakfast

City centre is a maze of narrow alleys framed with old timber houses from late 19th to early 20th centuries punctuated with more recent buildings. Reykjavík is the oldest settlement in Iceland (late 9th century) but became a town relatively recently, in 1786. We will learn about life in the city from the very beginning of settlement in Iceland to the present day. We stop by the church of Hallgrímskirkja  and drive through the university district, past the Nordic house (Nordic cultural centre, designed by Alvar Aalto) and the National Museum. In the very city centre we stop by the City hall, which juts into

the small lake of Tjörnin. Nearby are the Lutheran Cathedral (1847) and the House of Parliament (1881) and monuments to Jón Sigurðsson (19th century Independence hero) and also a sculpture of Skúli Magnússon, the father of the town itself. On the lake are many birds: many kinds of ducks, whooper swans and various seagulls and arctic terns (depending on season). We also drive by the harbour to observe fishing vessels of different sizes, whale hunters and whale watchers. In Reykjavík are many public works of art, mainly sculptures. Many of those are the work of Ásmundur Sveinsson (1893-1982) whose home and workshop we will pass near the recreational area of Laugardalur. The latest addition to Reykjavík is the concert/conference hall of Harpan (the Harp) built on the northern waterfront of the town centre whose dramatic design captures and reflects the light of the city, ocean and sky with a thrilling effect. (The routing of this city tour is subject to change)

Overnight: Fosshotel Lind

Day 4: The South Coast

Meals: Breakfast

We drive first over a lava plateau and then into the southern lowlands of Iceland. The route passes through some of the prettiest countryside in Iceland with fields, farms and villages towards the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers in South Iceland. Under Eyjafjallajökull is the volcano that erupted in the spring of 2010 and caused all the problems with air traffic over Europe. We reach Seljalandsfoss, a graceful ribbon-like waterfall, which drops from an overhanging lava cliff. It is possible to walk behind it, but do not expect to stay dry! We continue to the impressive Skógafoss waterfall (62m, 203 feet) and is among the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland. Then on to the viewof Sólheimajökull from a distance before we reach the beautifully sited village of Vík í Mýrdal, the southernmost village in Iceland (population 250). After lunch break we continue on to the volcanic black sand beach of Reynisfjara. Here are interesting caves and impressive rock formations, including columnar basalt. In summer birds nest in the cliffs, including puffins and fulmars. After a storm the spectacular high surf of the North Atlantic pounds the cliffs. From Reynisfjara you can enjoy stunning views of picturesque Dyrhólaey promontory, a 120m spur of rock and featuring natural arch, that stands in water deep enough to allow boats to pass through.

Overnight: Fosshotel Lind

I have just completed Guided Iceland Circle with driver/guide Bergsteinn. The tour was interesting and well paced. The accommodation was clean and comfortable. Bergsteinn did a good job of providing interesting information, but not too much commentary. Completing the Ring Road is a great way of seeing the different facets of Iceland as each region is quite different. I would definitely travel with GJ Travel again.

Tour with GJ Travel, it was incredible!

I went to Iceland on the First week of February of this year and did a 5 day tour with GJ Travel, it was incredible!

We stayed at great places, had excellent food, visited some of the best views on that side of the world and what was more they go beyond their service.

Let me explain, you see on the last day of our trip I lost my wallet (entirely my fault for being careless) and in it I had $500 dollars in cash, 30 euro, 5000 Peso, a credit card, a currency card containing another $500 dollars, an ID, a letter, and photos.

I thought they were pretty much lost to me and I was down for a few days of my tour. But because Iceland was really mesmerizing, I forgot about my dilemma and continued with my tour.

After I returned to my country I was given a message by GJ travel that they found my wallet in the bus and that they are sending them to me. It is now with me complete with everything that is in it.

If there was one thing that made me sad only, was the fact that no one had any liking at all at any of my photos hehe.

Such honesty and service should be applauded. That is why in visiting Iceland I highly recommend GJ travel as you can never get any better treatment than that.

I want to thank the people who made it possible for the return of my wallet especially to Bjarki Georg Ævarsson for answering all my queries about it.

So, the next time you think of travel, why not Iceland and why not GJ Travel? I guarantee it will be one of the best decisions you ever did as I did!

For it being my first time to Iceland, and my mom's second time. I loved the whole tour. I have special-needs, and Rocky Rock, our tour guide made sure I was always OK on the glacier, and waterfall hikes. He would hang onto me to make sure I didn't fall as I do have difficulty walking.

Jon our bus driver did an awesome job with getting everyone from one place to another. I can imagine how tiring it must've been, for him to have to drive the many miles he had to drive from Reykjavik, and back. But, he dud it all with a great attitude. Meeting everyone else on the tour was an unforgettable moment too.

Looking forward to coming back someday, and doing another tour with you guys. We just came off the "Best of Iceland" tour yesterday that we did with you guys, for six days.
