Itinerary

Day 1: Depart USA

Safari excitement begins with the overnight flight to Kenya.

Day 2: Nairobi (Mondays)

On arrival at the Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta International Airport you will be met by a representative of Great Safaris and transferred to The Stanley Hotel.

Day 3: Shaba Game Reserve

Drive north this morning to ‘Born Free’ country where Joy and George Adamson raised Elsa the lion cub in the wild and beautiful Shaba National Reserve which along with Buffalo Springs is part of the area known as ‘Samburu’. Arrive for lunch at the Sarova Shaba Lodge, built around natural springs and offers an oasis of green in the midst of this beautiful but harshly arid landscape. The Sarova Shaba Lodge is located high above the Shaba Game Reserve, and it cleverly incorporates the beautiful natural springs as one of its special features.

Day 4: Shaba Game Reserve

After an early morning game drive, returning to the Lodge for breakfast. Mid morning is spent at leisure. Enjoy an afternoon game drive.

The Shaba Reserve is named after an outcrop of volcanic rock that dominates the region. Many small hills dot the landscape and with four springs, Shaba is better watered than its neighbors. Animals commonly seen are elephants, lions, cheetahs, giraffes and buffalos to name a few. The river forest attracts a wide variety of birds.

Day 5: Lake Nakuru National Park

After breakfast, depart heading southwest to Nyahururu, still known to many as Thomson’s Falls for its 237-foot cascade. After a brief stopover, travel in a southerly direction to your next destination: Lake Nakuru, colored a shimmering flamingo pink from thousands of the beautiful birds lining its shores. Wildlife is also in abundance here. Arrive at Lion Hill Lodge affording unforgettable views of the lake from its hillside perch. In the afternoon there will be a game drive in Nakuru National Park.

Lion Hill Lodge impresses every guest with its panoramic view of the pink shoreline created by millions of flamingos on Lake Nakuru. The Lodge is situated within the Lake Nakuru National Park Rift Valley Province and is surrounded by natural flora and fauna in its beautiful grounds.

Day 6: Masai Mara

Leave flamingo fringed Lake Nakuru behind, heading southwards and turn right at Maai Mahiu to ascend up over the top of the Mau Escarpment. Then heading due south, you travel towards Narok, gateway to the Masai Mara and district headquarters of this part of Masailand.

You’ll travel across the “breadbasket” of Kenya, covered with acres of wheat and barley; you’ll reach your destination, Mara Sarova luxury tented camp, by lunchtime. Located within the boundaries of the Masai Mara Game Reserve, this comfortable luxury camp offers delicious meals and a swimming pool, and makes a perfect base from which to explore the wonders of this corner of Kenya. Lunch at the camp.

Take an afternoon game-drive in this magnificent game reserve. Masai Mara is an extension of the Serengeti ecosystem to the south. Game abounds here, particularly when the migration is on, and millions of wildebeest and zebras make their way back and forth across the Mara River on their annual trek. The Mara is also noted for its abundance of lions – particularly the superb black maned males. You’ll see lots of elephants here often in large herds, and if you’re lucky leopard, cheetah and rhino. All of the Big Five are residents. You’re sure to see the African buffalo. Get the cameras ready and enjoy yourselves!

Sarova Mara Camp is set in the African bush but the luxurious tents all have permanent roofs, zip-up fronts, electricity and en-suite facilities. Relaxing outside your own tent listening to the orchestra of rasping Cicadas, croaking Tree Frogs and the intermittent call of birds and monkeys is a memorable symphony.

Day 7: Masai Mara

Set out on an early morning game drive returning to the Lodge for breakfast. Mid-morning is spent at leisure and lunch at the Camp.

Take an afternoon game viewing drive in the reserve, with the opportunity of enjoying breathtaking vistas, panoramas of vast rolling plains, hills and woodland groves, well watered by the lovely Mara River.

Day 8: Depature

Bid farewell to the Masai Mara as you set on your journey back to Nairobi. Travel across the vast plains on the floor of the Rift Valley keep an eye out for herds of giraffe and gazelle and head up the escarpment on a road built by Italian prisoners of war during World War II. You will arrive in Kenya’s bustling capital city Nairobi in the early afternoon. Lunch on your own arrangements.

Transfer to Nairobi Airport for your departure flight where you will bid farewell to Africa until the next time.

Day 9: Arrive USA

With memories never to be forgotten!

The reservation was with Great Safaris and was the easiest, most complete, best value safari we have ever has with an Africa Tour Company. We have been sending people to Africa for more than twenty years, and this was the smoothest reservation with the absolute best documents from any tour operator.

Will definitely use Great Safaris again, and recommend them to all of our interested clients.

My husband and I traveled to South Africa and Botswana to do 4 safaris at different camps in each country. Our experience was everything we could have hoped for and more. The safaris were fantastic and we saw all of the animals on our list and more. The guides were excellent, knowledgeable, polite, friendly and very accommodating. Every safari trip was unique and full of wildlife. Each of the camps had wonderful accommodations and terrific food. If I have a negative comment on the trip, there was way too much food! It seemed like we were always being fed. The staff at the camps were wonderful, making sure that all of our needs were taken care of in a timely manner.

We did visit Cape Town and Victoria Falls. Those trips were lovely, the hotels very nice and the guides excellent.

All in all our trip was terrific. We had a great experience, one that we will long remember.

In the past I have always planned our trips outside the United States, including Northern and Southern Europe including Turkey. However, when I started the same process for South Africa including a Safari, it was obvious that I really wasn’t up to the task. I was so fortunate to be directed to Great Safaris, who methodically presented me with the options and a frank discussion of each. The result was spectacular, ranging from the choice of hotels in Cape Town to the Safari lodge and the hotel at Victoria Falls, plus the ‘side trips’ and excursions. The family universally felt that this was truly an exceptional, marvelous experience that will never be forgotten. Their assistance each time we arrived at a new destination and at the time of departure was both reliable and up to any standards that I would have hoped to receive.

For several years we had considered going to Africa but ultimately selected a river cruise or a trip to some historic place. This year was a significant birthday for my wife so we wanted something special. Some friends who had returned from Africa encouraged us again in that direction. Now that we have been there, we just wish that we had done it earlier. The trip to Africa with its uniqueness, beautiful scenery, and wonderful people made this the best trip we have ever taken. We had superb service, magnificent living quarters, and the highest quality meals. When you add to this the joy of seeing all the animals of Africa in their natural state, shown to you by the most accommodation guides, the result is that you come home better than when you left. If we had seen only the Serengeti and the people of Africa, the trip would have been everything it was advertised to be. Go there!

An incredible experience in every way. It was a seamless South African trip from the airport pick up to the safaris, cage diving, hikes and wine tasting. Great Safaris did an incredible job in the planning and execution of our African experience, so that we could sit back and enjoy the ride. Highly recommended!

Additional Information:

When you think about safaris you first think of Kenya – the home of the African safari. Kenya is an amazing land, rich in wildlife and culture. We have game parks filled with an incredible variety of animals ranging from the more than a million and a half wildebeest that visit the Masai Mara during the annual migration to the hippos of Samburu. Let our Kenya Adventure Safari – Samburu, Lake Nakuru & Masai Mara take you there.

The romance of an African safari was born in Kenya. Nairobi today is a colorful tapestry woven with many ethnic groups, modern and colonial buildings, sleek Mercedes and dusty donkey carts. Here weary travelers can stretch out the kinks of air travel and replenish energies in anticipation of the safari.

Continue overland to the edge of Kenya’s arid northern reaches to Samburu… home to all the ‘big ones’ as well as some peculiar and rare species. The colorfully clad tribes people live the same lifestyle as their forbears and are endlessly eager to mingle with foreigners who visit their ancestral lands.

kenya-adventureTravel onto Lake Nakuru for overnight and then continue to the Masai Mara, Kenya’s most spectacular game park. The wildlife is here aplenty: lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, rhino… and daily safaris reward with close-up encounters. Here you can hop aboard a hot air balloon, in the soft hours of dawn, and marvel at the birds-eye view of the rolling savannah.

Our safaris by road travel in modern 7 passenger 4 x 4 safari vehicles, with only a maximum of 7 passengers in a vehicle to ensure that everyone enjoys a window seat.
