A 90mins drive away is Shigatse, with its impressive Tashilump Monastery, one of the Six Big Monasteries of Gelugpa (or Yellow Hat Sect) in Tibet.

Small groups are usually defined as between 10 and 24 travelers, often less. If you're the kind of person who enjoys more intimate experiences and personal service this is a good choice. All else being equal you will pay a premium for this style vs a larger group tour.

Our guide, Luosang, and our driver made our trip amazing. Whether it was singing Buddhist prayers in the car in the morning on our drives, helping us fend off feisty cows, encouraging us to try local foods, helping us to find the best photo to capture the memory, or teaching us about the history and religion of the beautiful places we visited, they ensured that we had the best possible experience of the country and its lovely people at every moment.
