Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to London!

Accommodation: Hendon Hall Hotel

After collecting your baggage, pick up your rental car and let your adventure begin! Make your way to your hotel, where the rest of your day is at leisure. If time allows, make your way to Hampstead Heath in the afternoon, which is one of London's most popular open spaces, situated just four miles from Trafalgar Square.

English Heritage Visitor Pass (9)

The English Heritage Pass is a one-price entrance ticket to some of England’s most iconic and historically significant English Heritage properties, valid for 9 consecutive days. It includes free entry to over 100 stately homes, castles, abbes, Roman and prehistoric remains; free or reduced price entry to hundreds of exciting events, a free 350-page color souvenir guidebook, including maps and information on over 100 staffed attractions and an additional 300 free attractions maintained by English Heritage.

Some of the included properties and attractions are Stonehenge, Hadrian’s Wall, Dover Castle, Kenilworth Castle, and the home of Charles Darwin. This visitor’s pass provides incredible value for money, and pays for itself after just 2 or 3 attraction visits!

Your pass will be valid for 9 consecutive days from the first day of use, and entitles you to free admission to any site listed as one of the English Heritage locations, subject to individual opening times.

Day 2: London - Oxford - Cotswolds - Stratford-upon-Avon

Accommodation: Ettington Park Hotel

Your route today will take you via Oxford through the beautiful Cotswolds, on to Stratford-upon-Avon. Enjoy some time sightseeing in the famous University town of Oxford before heading to Burford via the A40 - a good place for antique lovers.

Make your way to Bourton-on-the-Water, either via A40/A429 or via Rissingtons where you will find scenic, more beautiful country roads for more adventurous drivers. Then it's on to Stow-on-the-Wold (A429) - or you can dip into the Slaughters for a less tourist-crowded experience and gorgeous photo opportunities by the river.

From here head to Chipping Camden or Broadway (via A424/A44) and take any route up to Stratford from there. Your number of stops today of course depends on time spent in Oxford and other towns.

Day 3: Stratford-upon-Avon - Warwick – Cheshire

Accommodation: Rookery Hall Hotel & Spa

Why not spend some time this morning visiting Stratford, and possibly also venture out to Anne Hathaway's (Shakespeare's wife) or Mary Arden's (Shakespeare's mother) farm (the latter being less crowded).

From here the route takes you further north and there are some worthwhile visits along the way - visit the Town of Warwick and Castle, which gives you a perfect sense of history. Also, Kenilworth Castle is of particular interest for fans of the Tudors, as there are castle ruins and a recently restored Elizabethan garden.

Along the way, Coventry Cathedral and Lichfield, a medieval cathedral and National Memorial Arboretum, should not be missed. After Coventry make sure to bypass Birmingham on the east side, to avoid big city traffic. Your last stop of the day can be Stoke-on-Trent, famous for its potteries, which can be admired at the Wedgewood museum.

Day 4: Cheshire - Chester - Liverpool – Wetherby

Accommodation: Wood Hall Hotel

Leaving the hotel this morning and heading further north, you have a couple of options. For the city trippers take the route via Chester (A51), where there is a lot of Roman history to be enjoyed. Then head to Liverpool where you will find a very interesting slavery museum at the docks. And you won't want to miss the attractions dedicated to The Beatles, including the award-winning Beatles Story exhibition.

If time allows, swing by the historic markets in Harrogate and Knaresborough (A56/ A59) before checking in at your hotel in Wetherby. History fans might want to consider a different route via Chatsworth House, the home of the Dukes of Devonshire and the Mitford Sisters, or Haddon Hall, an Elizabethan manor house which is often used for period film locations. You will come across Eyam, 'the little plague town' and you can take a boat trip at Standedge Tunnel.

A Tip For Your Trip: For the literary fans, you can make a side-step to Haworth, home to the Bronte sisters. Keep in mind that going through the Peak District will add to the driving time significantly (over 4 hours journey time for less than 150 miles).

Day 5: Wetherby - Yorkshire - York – Yarm

Accommodation: Crathorne Hall Hotel

Today's route will take you into Yorkshire, the largest of all English counties, with a very diverse landscape. Traveling the route via York, Scarborough and Whitby to Yarm where your next overnight stop is, is not a challenging drive (A64/A171), but still offers some North Yorkshire Moors experience.

Ensure some time for sightseeing in York as well as visiting Castle Howard, a stunning stately home. Scarborough was the first British seaside resort, it also has a castle and a port with some old fishing industry history. At Whitby you find coastal views, cliff walks, an old abbey - Bram Stoker found his inspiration for the famous book of Dracula here.

It is also famous for its seafood, which is a must try. The more adventurous driver can get an adrenaline kick from taking route A170 instead, which starts outside Thirsk with a very steep climb up the moors.

Day 6: Yarm - Hexam - Alston

You have more time today to explore this beautiful area of northern England. Travel to Hexham, an historic, bustling town in the heart of the Tyne Valley.

Here you can visit the Abbey, before taking an adventurous walk through stunning landscapes, along the Hadrian's Wall Path. It is a walk inspired by Britain's greatest Roman monument, Hadrian's Wall. Later, travel on to Alston, the highest town in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

A Tip For Your Trip: From Fortrose take a small detour to Chanonry Point - one of the best onshore sites in Scotland from which to view dolphins!

Day 7: Alston - Alnick Castle – Edinburgh

Accommodation: Norton House Hotel & Spa

The last leg of your Britain tour will take you over the border and into Scotland. Take the coastal route to Scotland. We recommend a visit at Alnwick Castle, you might know Alnwick Castle from its starring role as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the first two Harry Potter films.

Bamburgh Castle is also nearby, which invites a photo stop capturing the castle, shoreline and Farne Island. Then continue to Berwick-upon-Tweed before heading up to Edinburgh for some sightseeing in Scotland's Capital City.

Day 8: Depart Edinburgh

Your tour of Britain's manor homes comes to an end today. In accordance with your flight time, make the short transfer from your hotel to Edinburgh Airport, to begin your journey home.

When I booked with Great Value I was nervous because it seemed too good to be true. Nope, just a really great deal. I was able to take my dream trip to Ireland and Scotland and it was within my budget. Everything was covered, my lodging, flights, and rental car. There was no hidden fees, or fine print that would nickel and dime me later on, as "good deals" usually have. I also had to change the date of my trip and the customer service was excellent and this change was simple. Thank you Great Value, I'll be using you every time I travel from now on

Everything on the trip was excellent. The only concern with any services from GVV was initial communications ahead of the trip regarding when and how we'd receive all our travel vouchers, as some were available online, and some were to be picked up in country upon arrival. It took no less than 5 phone calls to learn some vouchers would be picked up in country. The trip was outstanding, exhausting, but gloriously beautiful. It was exhausting from the perspective of moving around the country and only a few places were 2 nights. But, we knew that going in, and we wanted to see ALL of Switzerland and this certainly checked those boxes. We saw majestic mountains, we saw countless waterfalls and glaciers. The trains in Switzerland were all clean and we felt safe. The hotels were good with delicious breakfasts each morning. Overall, I would recommend GVV to a friend or family member and I would personally book another vacation with GVV.

This was my first time planning a trip out of the country. I read previous reviews who had a good experience with Great Value Vacation. Our trip was amazing! The booking and reservations were easy to use with the vouchers provided. The staff was helpful. The only downside was I upgraded to have an automatic vehicle and they gave me a stick shift. It took a while to get sorted out but other than that I loved my trip! I will definitely use great value vacations again when I book my next trip. I opted for the additional wine tasting package and I did not regret it! I recommend adding those additional tours to get a more complete experience.

My wife and I recently booked our vacation through Great Value Vacations. We were a bit nervous to travel to Europe for the first time, but we are glad we did. Great Value Vacations took care of us. Great customer service. Seamless transactions. They booked the hotels and flights for us. All we had to worry about were the daily activities! I would highly recommended them. The hotels offered through the package were as advertised: nice and in great locations. The flights times were also convenient. The best part was the price. I am thankful for the experiences Great Value Vacation was able to provide for us!

Really enjoyed both of my trips

Really enjoyed both of my trips through Great Value Vacations. I went on one family trip to Ireland (Adare villa, rental car with trips out to Dublin, Cliffs of Moher and more) . The villa was very comfortable with a kitchen, three bedrooms, and proximity to the local shops /restaurants. We were able to upgrade to an automatic car and had fun navigating to each location on our itinerary. The trip as planned by the agency still leaves time for exploring on your own and since we picked a trip with our own transportation, we had flexibility on which tours we wanted to do and when.

My second trip was a solo trip to Scotland. I like to go on vacation by myself sometimes, but it can be hard to find ones where you aren’t penalized for being on your own. This train trip to Edinburgh, Inverness, and Glasgow worked out really well for me. The hotels were all near the train stations and in safe areas (good lighting, plenty of people, etc.). I got a good mix of options for sightseeing in each city. The hop-on, hop-off bus circuit was especially useful for getting around Edinburgh. I also added an extra tour on in Glasgow to see nearby castles and a distillery and was very glad to have done so as the views of the countryside were amazing!

Summary: Have enjoyed my previous experiences and would definitely use again

Just got back from our trip to Italy booked through Great Value Vacations & was our dream come true! We could not have gone if it were not for their unbelievable rates. Each 4 Star Villa we stayed at was above and beyond our expectations...I cried after leaving each part of our journey. I am so glad I took a leap of faith and would HIGHLY RECOMMEND booking with them. Besides the Villas being beautiful, great locations, clean, and great staff; each place we arrived at actually said, "They said to give you a very nice room." (with a rate of just under $1,900 a piece for 9 nights not counting travel days at 4 stars Villas in Rome, Tuscany, & Venice including airfare and rent a car... a few friends told us to expect the worst rooms at the places we were staying ~ NOT the case! Our rooms had the best views...I could go on and on. Every step of the way was smooth with no worries whatsoever. Thanks again GVV! LOVED IT!
