Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Edinburgh!

Accommodation: Stay Central Hotel

Upon arrival in Edinburgh Airport, enjoy a private transfer to your first accommodation. Once you've settled, hike up to Edinburgh Castle for panoramic views of the city.

Celebrate your first night by indulging in a plate of Scotland's National dish - Haggis!

Transfer to Edinburgh hotel

Day 2: Edinburgh

Start your Scotland journey with your Secrets of the Royal Mile Walking Tour. Then enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure!

Secrets of the Royal Mile Walking Tour

This 1.5-hour walking tour is the perfect introduction to Scotland’s capital. Discover an Edinburgh beyond the reach of tour buses and books. Your expert guide will take you to the places where history was made - the wynds, closes, courtyards and homes of Edinburgh’s Old Town.

You’ll be hanging on your guide’s every word, as the true stories of the city’s past unfold. The characters? Think Mary Queen of Scots, David Hume, Adam Smith and Robert Burns. But you’ll go far beyond the well-known facts and faces - uncovering another side of the city, and Scotland’s past. From crime and culture to politics and everyday events, all Edinburgh life is here - expertly told by your local guide.

Day 3: Edinburgh - Inverness

Accommodation: The Glen Mhor Hotel

Please arrive by 8:30am for a 9:00am departure, from the Edinburgh Bus Station (Gate J & K, St Andrew Square).

Leaving Edinburgh with your guide, you follow the trail of some of the best-known locations featured in the Outlander television Series. Heading north to Inverness, your first visit will be the charming village of Culross, the fictional village of Cranesmuir and the home of Geillis Duncan and her ill-fated husband Arthur. Exploring the town’s cobbled streets is like taking a step back in time. Look carefully and you may even find Claire’s herb garden behind the impressive, historic Culross Palace.

Continue to the small town of Falkland to revisit one of the first scenes of the show, where Falkland substitutes for 1940s Inverness. See if you can recognize the familiar sights such as Mrs. Baird’s Guesthouses (The Covenanter Hotel) and the Bruce Fountain, where Claire sees the ghost of Jamie. Also, Campbell’s Coffee Shop or Farrell’s Hardware and Furniture Store (Fayre Earth Gift Shop), where Claire stops to look at the window stocked with authentic period merchandise.

In the early afternoon there will be a stop at the Newtonmore Highland Folk Museum, which houses replicas of 18th century turf-roofed Highland crofts, making it a perfect choice for the period scenes. You can see them in scenes filmed in and around the Mackenzie village, as well as the background of the scene where Claire, Jamie and his clansmen shelter in the first episode, and later when Dougal collects the rent.

You'll head north again to pass Aviemore, where you may recognize the stunning hilly and wooded area of Tulloch Ghru, which appears during the journey Claire takes with Jamie and the Highlanders from Craigh na Dun to Castle Leoch (you may also recognize it from the opening credits). You’ll arrive in Inverness later that afternoon.

Day 4: Inverness

Accommodation: Best Western Imperial Hotel

Today starts by visiting majestic Glen Affric, one of Scotland’s most breathtaking Glens of lochs and mountains that’s surrounded on all sides by the stunning Caledonian pine forest.

This is big Scottish countryside, ideal for our Jamie to hide! In the afternoon visit Culloden, which plays such an important role in Scottish history and the Outlander books. It’s at the Culloden Battlefield where Claire and Jamie said their tearful goodbyes, before Jamie joined the Jacobite army to fight for the Stuarts.

You have the opportunity to explore the visitor center, and pay tribute to those who lost their lives at the last battle fought on British soil. Later you take a short drive to the ancient standing stones at Clava Cairns, which could have given inspiration for Craigh na Dun. Return back to Inverness with time to explore the town and enjoy the city for another evening.

Day 5: Inverness - Fort William

A short drive this morning will take us to Beauly, the site of Beauly Priory and the tomb of Lord Lovat in the heart of Clan Fraser lands.

Beauly Priory is a beautiful 13th century ruin and, according to Diana Gabaldon’s book, is where the Lovat Frasers are buried. From here, continue to Castle Leod, seat of the Clan Mackenzie, where you'll have the opportunity to enjoy a relaxing walk in the grounds while your guide tells you some of the history of the Clan and Castle.

The Castle has a striking resemblance to how Diana Gabaldon has described Castle Leoch, however she had never heard of the castle prior to writing Outlander. In the afternoon, you have the opportunity to sample ‘The Water of Life’ with a whisky distillery tour and tasting. There might even be time to look out for the Waterhorse at Loch Garve!

You'll then continue along the entire length of Loch Ness – another opportunity for some monster spotting - before arriving in Fort William.

Day 6: Fort William - Edinburgh

Accommodation: Jurys Inn Edinburgh

You'll travel to Glenfinnan this morning to visit the monument which commemorates the beginning of the last Jacobite rising. It stands framed amid typically spectacular Highland scenery at the head of Loch Shiel, with sweeping glens as a backdrop.

Continue through magnificent Glencoe, one of Scotland’s most famous and scenic glens. Cross the rugged Trossachs area and onto Doune Castle, near Stirling. The Castle is an extensive ruin featured as Castle Leoch in the television program, home to Colum MacKenzie and his clan in the 18th century episodes.

Return to Edinburgh later that afternoon with a photo stop at Blackness Castle on the banks of the Firth of Forth. Your special Jamie & Claire Outlander experience comes to an end as you arrive in Edinburgh, at approximately 7:00pm.

Day 7: Depart Scotland

Your private airport transfer will take you to Edinburgh Airport in accordance with your departure flight today.

When I booked with Great Value I was nervous because it seemed too good to be true. Nope, just a really great deal. I was able to take my dream trip to Ireland and Scotland and it was within my budget. Everything was covered, my lodging, flights, and rental car. There was no hidden fees, or fine print that would nickel and dime me later on, as "good deals" usually have. I also had to change the date of my trip and the customer service was excellent and this change was simple. Thank you Great Value, I'll be using you every time I travel from now on

Everything on the trip was excellent. The only concern with any services from GVV was initial communications ahead of the trip regarding when and how we'd receive all our travel vouchers, as some were available online, and some were to be picked up in country upon arrival. It took no less than 5 phone calls to learn some vouchers would be picked up in country. The trip was outstanding, exhausting, but gloriously beautiful. It was exhausting from the perspective of moving around the country and only a few places were 2 nights. But, we knew that going in, and we wanted to see ALL of Switzerland and this certainly checked those boxes. We saw majestic mountains, we saw countless waterfalls and glaciers. The trains in Switzerland were all clean and we felt safe. The hotels were good with delicious breakfasts each morning. Overall, I would recommend GVV to a friend or family member and I would personally book another vacation with GVV.

This was my first time planning a trip out of the country. I read previous reviews who had a good experience with Great Value Vacation. Our trip was amazing! The booking and reservations were easy to use with the vouchers provided. The staff was helpful. The only downside was I upgraded to have an automatic vehicle and they gave me a stick shift. It took a while to get sorted out but other than that I loved my trip! I will definitely use great value vacations again when I book my next trip. I opted for the additional wine tasting package and I did not regret it! I recommend adding those additional tours to get a more complete experience.

My wife and I recently booked our vacation through Great Value Vacations. We were a bit nervous to travel to Europe for the first time, but we are glad we did. Great Value Vacations took care of us. Great customer service. Seamless transactions. They booked the hotels and flights for us. All we had to worry about were the daily activities! I would highly recommended them. The hotels offered through the package were as advertised: nice and in great locations. The flights times were also convenient. The best part was the price. I am thankful for the experiences Great Value Vacation was able to provide for us!

Really enjoyed both of my trips

Really enjoyed both of my trips through Great Value Vacations. I went on one family trip to Ireland (Adare villa, rental car with trips out to Dublin, Cliffs of Moher and more) . The villa was very comfortable with a kitchen, three bedrooms, and proximity to the local shops /restaurants. We were able to upgrade to an automatic car and had fun navigating to each location on our itinerary. The trip as planned by the agency still leaves time for exploring on your own and since we picked a trip with our own transportation, we had flexibility on which tours we wanted to do and when.

My second trip was a solo trip to Scotland. I like to go on vacation by myself sometimes, but it can be hard to find ones where you aren’t penalized for being on your own. This train trip to Edinburgh, Inverness, and Glasgow worked out really well for me. The hotels were all near the train stations and in safe areas (good lighting, plenty of people, etc.). I got a good mix of options for sightseeing in each city. The hop-on, hop-off bus circuit was especially useful for getting around Edinburgh. I also added an extra tour on in Glasgow to see nearby castles and a distillery and was very glad to have done so as the views of the countryside were amazing!

Summary: Have enjoyed my previous experiences and would definitely use again

Just got back from our trip to Italy booked through Great Value Vacations & was our dream come true! We could not have gone if it were not for their unbelievable rates. Each 4 Star Villa we stayed at was above and beyond our expectations...I cried after leaving each part of our journey. I am so glad I took a leap of faith and would HIGHLY RECOMMEND booking with them. Besides the Villas being beautiful, great locations, clean, and great staff; each place we arrived at actually said, "They said to give you a very nice room." (with a rate of just under $1,900 a piece for 9 nights not counting travel days at 4 stars Villas in Rome, Tuscany, & Venice including airfare and rent a car... a few friends told us to expect the worst rooms at the places we were staying ~ NOT the case! Our rooms had the best views...I could go on and on. Every step of the way was smooth with no worries whatsoever. Thanks again GVV! LOVED IT!
