Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Lima!

Say "hola" to Peru! Upon arrival in Lima, you will be greeted and transferred to your hotel. After you settle in, enjoy a sightseeing tour of all the major sites in the capital.

In the evening, enjoy your first Peruvian meal near your hotel.

A Tip For Your Trip: If available, choose a flight that arrives in the morning or early afternoon so you can enjoy the day in Lima! Should you arrive late in the day, your city sightseeing tour will be re-scheduled for the morning of Day 2.

Transfer to Lima hotel

Sightseeing tour of Lima

Embark on a tour of Lima's main avenues, boulevards, and squares, beginning with an exploration of colonial Lima which was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. First, you will stop off at the Plaza de Armas, where you see the square on foot and admire the exteriors of the Government Palace, the Cathedral of Lima, and the City Hall - all examples of Lima's still-present colonial architectural opulence. Walk through the Cathedral’s numerous chapels, discover its various architectural styles from Renaissance to Neo-Classical, and learn about the religious history of Peru. End the tour with a visit to the pastel yellow San Francisco Convent built in the 17th century. Explore the lavish interior and visit the catacombs, ancient underground cemetery of Lima.

Day 2: Lima - Cusco

Following breakfast at the hotel you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Cusco, Peru's breathtakingly beautiful colonial city! The juxtaposition of cultures makes this city one of the world's top destinations.

After you've settled in, enjoy a walking tour taking you to Cusco Cathedral and the sun temple Koricancha!

A Tip For Your Trip: Chewing coca leaves and drinking coca tea will help you adjust to Cusco's high altitude.

Walking tour of Cusco

Explore the Imperial City with a visit to one of the most impressive buildings of Incan Cusco: the Korikancha (the Golden Temple) - a temple dedicated to the worship of the Sun God, whose interior walls were said to have been covered in gold. Continue the tour with a stroll through the Plaza de Armas, where you will discover the imposing Cathedral and admire its exquisite vestibules and priceless paintings from the Cusco School of the 17th and 18th centuries.

Day 3: Cusco - Sacred Valley - Machu Picchu

Fuel up with breakfast at your hotel before transferring to Ollantaytambo train station for your expedition to Machu Picchu. Once you arrive in the town of Aguas Calientes, you’ll have a shuttle bus escort you to the citadel followed by a guided tour of Machu Picchu. Once you've ooed and awed at the magnificent ancient civilization, a shuttle bus will escort you down from Machu Picchu back to Aguas Calientes.

After you've rested your tired feet, enjoy a relaxing dinner in town.

Day 4: Machu Picchu - Sacred Valley - Cusco

In the morning, return to Aguas Calientes train station and enjoy a comfortable train ride back to Ollantaytambo. Enjoy a tour of Ollantaytambo ruins and the colorful Pisac Market before returning to Cusco.

Sacred Valley tour with visits to Ollantaytambo ruins & Pisac Market

Visit one of the last remaining Incan towns, Ollantaytambo, which was once fiercely guarded by a massive fortress. Discover the large archaeological complex that used to serve as a wayside inn for royal delegations on long journeys. Surviving structures here include multiple walls and towers used to protect the citadel from possible invasions. After touring the ruins, continue along the Sacred Valley to Pisac, a beautiful village where Incan and Colonial influences have created the unique way of life of the local inhabitants. Explore this quaint town, famous for its artisan market where you can find extraordinarily fine jewelry, ceramics and textile craftwork.

Day 5: Cusco

Today, enjoy a full day in Cusco at your leisure. Pay a visit to the Museum of Pre-Columbian Art housed in a former convent in the Plaza de las Nazarenas. This museum is wonderful for visitors looking for a different perspective on pre-Columbian ceramics.

Hike up to the San Blas neighborhood and pick up a few souvenirs to take home. In the evening, indulge in a few of Peru's delicacies. Adventurous eaters will want to try the local specialty, cuy (guinea pig).

Day 6: Cusco - Arequipa

Today, transfer to Cusco airport for your flight to Arequipa in the south. Enjoy a sightseeing tour of Arequipa and the Santa Catalina Monastery en-route to your hotel.

Guarded by three volcanoes - the Misti, the Chachani, and the Pichu Pichu - the magnificent Ciudad Blanca (White City) of Arequipa is Peru's second-largest city after Lima.

Sightseeing tour of Arequipa with Santa Catalina Monastery

Discover one of Peru's most beautiful colonial cities! Begin the tour with a visit to the Convento de Santa Catalina (Convent of St. Catherine). Founded in 1579 as a cloister, in its early days the convent was home to a small group of clergy who came from the local elite. Walk through its beautiful buildings as your guide takes you on a journey back in time through one of the largest holdings of colonial art in the Americas.

The tour continues with a visit to the Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús (Church of the Society of Jesus). With its imposing size, this magnificent church will take your breath away. Pay special attention to the baroque façade and the amazing sacristy, meticulously decorated with vividly-colored murals.

After finishing the tour of the church, move on to the Mirador del Carmen, a natural lookout point 10 minutes from the city center. Enjoy spectacular views of the Chili River Valley and the majestic Misti volcano.

End the tour in the upscale neighborhood of Yanahuara. Walk along its wide cobblestone avenues and see its old ashlar stone mansions and traditional gardens. Admire a beautiful church constructed in 1750 and a quaint plaza with a gorgeous ashlar stone lookout balcony.

Day 7: Arequipa - Colca - Arequipa

Today you will embark on a full day tour of Colca Canyon, the world's second deepest canyon! Explore the colorful Andean valley with pre-Inca roots and Spanish colonial towns which are still inhabited by people of the Collagua and the Cabana cultures. Have the chance to see the famous Andean Condor, commonly referred to as the "eternity bird" for its symbol of long life.

Private, full-day Colca Canyon tour (including boxed lunch)

Depart from Arequipa at 4am for a full-day tour of Colca Canyon. Your first stop will be Pampa Cañahuas plain where you will observe the National Reserve of Salinas. Then travel to Vizcachina, where you will be able to view the unique flora and fauna of the region: Andean Flamingoes, Parihuanas, Huallatas and Andean seagulls. Drive through Chucura at an altitude of over 15,000 ft passing through a volcanic crater until you reach the town of Chivay. Wait patiently at the Cruz del Condor viewpoint to catch a glimpse of the giant Andean condor, the largest flying bird in the world, soaring above. When I booked with Great Value I was nervous because it seemed too good to be true. Nope, just a really great deal. I was able to take my dream trip to Ireland and Scotland and it was within my budget. Everything was covered, my lodging, flights, and rental car. There was no hidden fees, or fine print that would nickel and dime me later on, as "good deals" usually have. I also had to change the date of my trip and the customer service was excellent and this change was simple. Thank you Great Value, I'll be using you every time I travel from now on

Everything on the trip was excellent. The only concern with any services from GVV was initial communications ahead of the trip regarding when and how we'd receive all our travel vouchers, as some were available online, and some were to be picked up in country upon arrival. It took no less than 5 phone calls to learn some vouchers would be picked up in country. The trip was outstanding, exhausting, but gloriously beautiful. It was exhausting from the perspective of moving around the country and only a few places were 2 nights. But, we knew that going in, and we wanted to see ALL of Switzerland and this certainly checked those boxes. We saw majestic mountains, we saw countless waterfalls and glaciers. The trains in Switzerland were all clean and we felt safe. The hotels were good with delicious breakfasts each morning. Overall, I would recommend GVV to a friend or family member and I would personally book another vacation with GVV.

This was my first time planning a trip out of the country. I read previous reviews who had a good experience with Great Value Vacation. Our trip was amazing! The booking and reservations were easy to use with the vouchers provided. The staff was helpful. The only downside was I upgraded to have an automatic vehicle and they gave me a stick shift. It took a while to get sorted out but other than that I loved my trip! I will definitely use great value vacations again when I book my next trip. I opted for the additional wine tasting package and I did not regret it! I recommend adding those additional tours to get a more complete experience.

My wife and I recently booked our vacation through Great Value Vacations. We were a bit nervous to travel to Europe for the first time, but we are glad we did. Great Value Vacations took care of us. Great customer service. Seamless transactions. They booked the hotels and flights for us. All we had to worry about were the daily activities! I would highly recommended them. The hotels offered through the package were as advertised: nice and in great locations. The flights times were also convenient. The best part was the price. I am thankful for the experiences Great Value Vacation was able to provide for us!

Really enjoyed both of my trips

Really enjoyed both of my trips through Great Value Vacations. I went on one family trip to Ireland (Adare villa, rental car with trips out to Dublin, Cliffs of Moher and more) . The villa was very comfortable with a kitchen, three bedrooms, and proximity to the local shops /restaurants. We were able to upgrade to an automatic car and had fun navigating to each location on our itinerary. The trip as planned by the agency still leaves time for exploring on your own and since we picked a trip with our own transportation, we had flexibility on which tours we wanted to do and when.

My second trip was a solo trip to Scotland. I like to go on vacation by myself sometimes, but it can be hard to find ones where you aren’t penalized for being on your own. This train trip to Edinburgh, Inverness, and Glasgow worked out really well for me. The hotels were all near the train stations and in safe areas (good lighting, plenty of people, etc.). I got a good mix of options for sightseeing in each city. The hop-on, hop-off bus circuit was especially useful for getting around Edinburgh. I also added an extra tour on in Glasgow to see nearby castles and a distillery and was very glad to have done so as the views of the countryside were amazing!

Summary: Have enjoyed my previous experiences and would definitely use again

Just got back from our trip to Italy booked through Great Value Vacations & was our dream come true! We could not have gone if it were not for their unbelievable rates. Each 4 Star Villa we stayed at was above and beyond our expectations...I cried after leaving each part of our journey. I am so glad I took a leap of faith and would HIGHLY RECOMMEND booking with them. Besides the Villas being beautiful, great locations, clean, and great staff; each place we arrived at actually said, "They said to give you a very nice room." (with a rate of just under $1,900 a piece for 9 nights not counting travel days at 4 stars Villas in Rome, Tuscany, & Venice including airfare and rent a car... a few friends told us to expect the worst rooms at the places we were staying ~ NOT the case! Our rooms had the best views...I could go on and on. Every step of the way was smooth with no worries whatsoever. Thanks again GVV! LOVED IT!
